The CSO maintain that the work will be carried out over five or six evenings and one weekend day, so an area supervisor may have to follow those guide lines, even if you feel you can do it in three evenings per week,he/she may be unwilling to sign anything contradicting CSO policy.
I received my rejection letter from CSO, so thankfully I don't have to worry anymore.

I get your point paffy69. I am sure that it would be great that all work could be done with in a time frame that meets the welfare offices criteria determining 'casual work'... why it wasnt organised that way one will never know?
It really is badly organised and gives no incentive to go back to work..... but I accept that if you did get the okay from a supervisor to work this work pattern you would not be breaking any rules.... or do as I did just withdraw your intrest or application.
Thanks for assistance, informative and clear.

I asked my supervisor today about the situation regarding retaining some of the welfare payment while working. She said that you could try to work mainly over the weekend, Saturday and Sunday, and then another day or two during the week days, thereby still being able to claim for the other 3 days you are not working. It IS only a part-time job so you are entitled to something, really it just depends on your individual welfare officer.

i was offered the positon on friday evening 18th of febuary

I went into my local welfare office on monday morning to know what the situation with census was part/time work etc and was told you must sign off

Met my supervisor on monday evening - explained about JB/JA and part time work.

Supervisor rang me on tuesday evening to say he had been told there was a national agreement between SW and CSO

went into SW office wednesday morning - was told no , no national agreement you must sign off

rang supervisor - supervisor doubled checked

went to SW office this morning and after twenty minutes of back and forth - they found a circular - ( reluctantly)

There is an agreement between the SW and CSO - basically do census over three days - keep benefits BUT produce all payslips when you get them at SWO

at the end of census X amount of money owed to SW will be paid back

That's unfortunate that you had so much trouble as it wa the opposite for me. The girl in the Welfare office just made a quick phone call and it was sorted. Hopefully I will be coming out with half my normal dole while doing the census which is better than I had hoped for.

I'm sorry but it doesn't. The guidelines are very specific. If you work for an hour a day for four days you're entitled to nothing. The OP, as mentioned a number of times, will be issued a slip each week that will indicate his DAYS worked signed by their employer, there isn't even a space for hours.

Well if people paid attention to the posts of people who've been there then it wouldn't have to be, would it?

I went to the Social Welfare today and said I got one of the Census jobs and that Im on JSB (stamps). I said that the job was 20-22hrs a week. And that I would be doing the job 3 days a week plus sunday. I said that I think the SW have some policy/something set up for those on JSB/JSA that are doing the census. The woman at the SW, didnt seem to know about it. She asked her collegues in there too and they didnt know. She said that the JSB would be fine next week and that I would have to call back the following week to see about it. She said that as Im on JSB that it would be easier.

So not sure what to think. I thought that all the SW offices in the country would have the one procedure.

Anyone else in Letterkenny/Donegal or elsewhere in the same situation?

Would you have any conceivable chance of getting them to give you a copy of the circular? You could then scan it and post it up here and everyone who got the CSO jobs could take it with them to the SW offices and smooth their path. People are needlessly being fobbed off and confused because the SW offices haven't gotten their act together and you could pull a master stroke here and get them all sorted! They'd say prayers for you, at the very least!

I asked for a copy but was told no it was a department document etc etc, to be fair they had only just seen it themselves - but it is definatly a national agreement that states in black and white that people receiving JSA/JSB and doing the census do not have to sign off and can do it on the 3/6 rule

The people in the SWO do not get every circular so i do think anyone with problems should ask to spek with senior SWO officers, get confirmation from supervisors, that it exists and persist , keep on to them- thay won't make it easy for ye,

So basically, do your work on Saturday and Sunday and 1 or 2 other days, and you can still retain half your SW payment. The above would keep SW happy and the CSO happy. You would be covering weekend, evening and some weekdays so you are bound to catch most people. If someone in full time employment is employed as an enumerator, which there has been, they will only be free evenings and weekends. So then doing your work as mentioned above, should be more than satisfactory.

You can work 3 days excluding sunday because sunday is not counted and still keep 3 days of JSB... saw the circular today but to be honest did not have a chance to have a good look at it and interpret it.

    Hi guys
I know this subject has been done to death - I have been offered the position of enumerator and have accepted. I have just been placed on a 3 day week in work since Feb 1st and have been receiving €94 from the social welfare for the other days not worked - do I now need to sign off or can I do the enumerator job on the 3 evenings that I currently work and a Sunday? Any input greatly appreciated.

It's a totally legitimate question and a bit unfair the way some people responded to you.

I'd be in a similar enough situation though I'm fortunate in that my spouse is working. I don't think I would be earning anymore than what I'm getting on the dole, possibly less, taking into account travel costs. I'm just dying to get out working again - though I have heard it can be a tough enough job!

I did the census enumeration. Its a tough impossible job, and i reckon i was only paid about 5 euros an hour for all the time i spent on it, calling back to houses several times, wasting petrol etc. I will never do it again. And all the supervisors, regional supervisors who never stoood on a door get twice as much for doing sweet damn all. As one supervisor said, thjey all get fools to do the ddoor to door, as gullible people apply for it out of desperation
