    And West British.

    What; Wales?

    As Ireland takes on board other influences and cultures does it really matter what people call their parents?

    I'm Irish so it's Mam of course.

    'Mum' is English, 'Mom' is American.

    Exactamundo !

    I have always said mom.
    My kids either call me mom or mommy.
    People have slagged me on here before about saying 'mom', but noone ever mentioned it to me before.

    Wtf should you say then?
    Me ma, mammy, the mother etc...?
    They all sound stupid.

    When I started Secondary school one of the girls I knew called her Mam 'Mom'. I thought it was bizarre but it didn't annoy me.

    Mom is what me and my brothers have always called her and we are all in our thirties so it's not because we are being influenced by media or America, in fact grew up in the Gaeltacht!!
    I cringe when I hear people using Mammy!!

    I did, but that's because she once ordered an Expresso and a biscuity.

    I say Mom, Mam, Mammy, Ma, and Mother.

    If you've got a problem with mom, you should have a problem with mam, ma, mammy etc. They're all just slang for Mother.

    I just say mam. None of the others bother me though!

    Well in Dublin think you can break it down as follows:

    Ma=Townie
    Mam = North Sider
    Mum / Mom = South Sider
    Mammy = Some Nurse from the country you met in coppers

    Seriously what is up with country folk calling their mother "mammy"? Chatting to a woman over the age of 10 who still does that is just odd if you ask me.

    Also weirded out by people who call their parents by their first name.

    It's mam, always has been until people wanted to sound like they came from anywhere but Ireland

    Mum is english - but people have been calling their mothers mum here for yonks - I think cause they thought it sounded better than mam.

    as for the American version "MWOOOOOMMMMM". This is terrible. Nobody

    Mam is the most authentic, for Ireland. And thats my twopence hapenny worth. Like it or lump it. :D
