My C25k group is at exactly the same stage. The 20mins run is the key, after which it'll all come easier. Take it even slower, approach it with positivity and enjoy the accomplishment :)

Thanks, sounds good. I'm already very happy with my progress and if I manage 20 minutes jogging I'll be breaking open a nice bottle of cremant/sparkling wine ( will save the champagne for week9.

Hi, it's been a while since I was on the C25K thread, and just looking for a bit of advice from anyone who has completed it. I eventually got up to 30 minute runs last year, and then had a good long break over christmas, so it took a few weeks to get back up to jogging for 30 minutes again. I'm jogging very slowly though, so the distance is under 4km. I'm just wondering whether to keep focusing on the 30 minutes and try to get a bit faster, or to keep going for longer and get my overall fitness up that way? Thanks for any advice!

I went out this morning wiping the sleep from my eyes to do W3 D2 and realised when i was being asked to run 5 minutes that i'd pressed week 4 instead. I actually found it ok so i think i'm going to do week 4 again on Friday and try to start week 5 next week. Not sure if it's a good plan to skip but we'll see how we go :D

    Hi everyone,

I'm a first time poster to this particular thread - I'm sorry to say I posted before on a different thread when doing c25k but I never made it to the end of the programme so had to slink away in shame!!:o This time, however, it will be different!

I'm up to w5d3, which is the furthest I've ever got. Last time I got stuck around the 5 min runs at week5d1 and I made myself repeat that day again and again, thinking that eventually I would be happy enough to move on. Well, that never happened because by repeating one particular day ad nauseum I'm pretty sure I drained away any enthusiasm I had for the programme. This time round (I started again in Jan) I was determined to push forward and not talk myself into believing I couldn't do it. So far so good :)

I did my two 8 min runs today which I am happy about, but am a bit panicked at the thought of the 20 min run on day 3! However, the more time goes on the more I realise that so much of c25k is about removing mental blocks to running; when I start to think that going from running for 8 mins to 20 mins is impossible I just think that logically the programme has thus far prepared me well and if this is what the programme says should come next then who am I to question it? Am just going to have faith...of course, coming here for a little inspiration helps with that also :)

Incidentally for anyone starting there is a good blog and free mp3 downloads for each week at www.runningintoshape.com I've found it pretty good so far.

Looking forward to chatting with ye here en route to a successful completion!

Eagar tortoise you are so right running is just as much a mental thing as a physical thing. With regards the 20 min run I found once I got the first 10th mins out of the day it got much easier my mind was like less than half left you can do it. So everyone w7 d1 done when I got to the 25 mins I decided to keep going and see if I could do 5k as I am running the operation transformation 5k on sat so did it in 40 mins including my 5 min warm up! Due to run again friday but ill give it a miss as race on Saturday!

Hey all, Glad to see everyone is Still on track. This week has been a disaster for me as due to work commitments I got my first run in last night since my twenty minute run on Saturday. The good news is that I actually managed my 20 min run the bad news is that I have done none of the week 6 training program. GOt out last night for a run and realised I didnt have my podcasts for week six so I just repeated the 20 min run from Saturday which went ok. Have signed up for the operationtransformation 5k run on tomo morning and I just got a map of the route, no chance I will run it all I dont think BUT I will give it my best shot and hope to surprise myyself one more time. Currently in my 20 min run I am only covring 3km so it will be a long stretch to add on to it.
Anyway here goes and fingers crossed that my lack of training this week wont really hamper my chances.
Cant believe that I am starting week 7 next week. Str8 runs from here on in?
I never ever ever thought that I would get this far. :D

You'll surprise yourself by how much extra the race atmosphere will give you. Wouldn't surprise me if you were able to run the whole 5k. :)

thanks rainbow, I hope I surprise myself, would really love to finish it, would be a great confidence booster!
Seems like an awfully long way! :D

They are doable but I had to stop a couple of times for a quick 2-breath break. That said, I was pleased I didn't need the whole 5 min walk to recover (though I took it anyway).
I am not looking forward to the 20 min run but if I can even just manage 2x 9min runs with a couple min in between or something, it'll be an improvement and I'll be happy

    @bluewolf and needaname
hey guys, dont be worrying abou thte runs before they come up, jsut focus, pace urself and youw ill do it.
Seriously if i did you all can! I even managed the 20 min run on sat and again last ngiht, its amazing what u can convince yourself to do! Try and see yuorself at theend of it and think how delighted withyourself you will be!
i am finding more and more its a mental battle rather than a aphysical one. physically it is very tough and i feel my legs becoming very hevy however i find it hard to battle with my head when one devil is saying give up, you cnat do it, you arent supposed to be able to run younever were and never could, when you have an angel on the other side saying look how far you have come, look at what you have accomplished, look at every week you have said the next run I wont be able to do! so try and fight the mental battle that tells you to give up and try your best to keep yourself going! snd you will get there! :p

Just completed W3D3 today, again, found it tough, starting week 4 monday,

I was thinkin today about it, and at the start i struggled to do 60 seconds, and now, i breeze through 2 minutes, its the final minute that kills me, but going to persevere with it.

@eefums- don't worry about it before it happens is good life advice!:D

I'll be doing my w5d3 tomorrow morning and I stubbornly refuse to worry about it.:)

It's amazing a couple of weeks ago i couldn't have imagined running any distance, now after a really frustrating morning i'm looking forward to getting home and burning off some steam with a run - only a 5 minute one but still :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 492 ✭✭Hennybug

I decided to try and finish week 4 despite skipping from day 1, week 3 straight into day 2, week 4 but it was fine - the frustration of the week may have helped and i figured after the wine i knew i'd consume tonight the week wouldn't be finished till Sunday :D.

Anyone thinking of starting the couch to 5 k, as others have said if i can do it, anyone can :D I'm enjoying it so much i've just signed up for the womens mini marathon in Galway in June

    Haven't posted for a while...

W5 D2 tonight and struggled a bit towards the end - then again I struggled toward the end of nearly every run I've done so far!!
Amazing how toward the end of every run I'm promising myself that the smokes have to go but 30 minutes later I'm puffing away like BillyO and saying that it wasn't that bad...
Reasonably happy with my progress so far but delighted with the Mrs progress. She finished week 4 last week but is out with a chest cold all this week so is going to redo week 4 next week.

Good advice BTW 'eefums'- the mental battle can be a killer. That little Devil is so much bigger than the Angel on the other shoulder!!!

Next up 20 mins... Might have to bring the smokes with me for that one!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 52 ✭✭needaname

    Thanks eefums and bluewolf :)

I'm sure it is just a mental battle that I really need to beat! Positive thinking is the way forward.... I'm actually really looking forward to my next run now :D

Elsy this was good advice! I did my 20 min run yesterday evening and once I heard the voice on the podcast tell me I was half way through I totally relaxed into it and realised I was going to make it!! Once that happened I really hit my stride and by the end of it felt I could probably have lasted a couple more minutes. I didn't bother to try and see if that was true though lol :D

Anyone else who feels frightened of week5 day 3 20 min run don't be - if you are following the programme then you are well prepared :),

Right, I'm going to do w5d3 tongiht or tomorrow morning
I decided I'll go cracked in the head if I do it with ullrey's podcast (his w5 music is brill, but all the 'week 1/2 you're finished now, w3 keep going' is too much)

    So...

Eefmums I didnt do much better 43 min 40 seconds ive done all my runs on a threadmill so far so was a shock to the system how much harder it was I ran most of it but did have to slow down to a walking pace a couple of times for a minute or 2 to catch my breath. But sure we did it and over time we'll improve on it. Im going to register for the 5k on 20th march only way ill get better is to do more. Going to start running outside at least twice a week fŕom now on.
