Not what you're friend has owned, but purely the worst car you have ever owned and why?

For me the Saab 93 Aero has to be the worst, namely due to the fact that I got to drive it 14 miles!

Clutch cable snapped after 4 days and gear box fell through. Never again would I ever drive this.

2005 Mondeo Tddi, I didn't own it but had it for a year as a company car, DMF went and another time something went wrong with the intercooler that meant anything over 25mph was a non runner. Dirt in my eyes, glad it was under warranty.

2nd worst was the 216 Coupe I had, gearbox went before I got rid of it.

It was the most expensive car I owned. New enough at the time to be truly mint and old enough to have a couple of freaky problems that had to be fixed properly to keep the car good. I loved it even when it was breaking my heart so it was the best and worst car I had.

Rover Metro diesel (it had something which I think was called 'hydragas' suspension).

    Dreadful crate.

No mate. That was just the closest snap I could find online :D

It was a high spec, low mileage 1.9TD(red)I quattro sport avant in silver with 18" RS4 reps.

have to say all the cars i have owned have been good.. worst of the lot was probaly the 98 2.0D avensis. it never gave me any trouble or anything but it was dead for a 2L. i got it after driving a micra for a year so it felt fast at the time!!

It'd have to be the current 206. Thank god it's only a runaround. I can honestly see why some people don't enjoy driving when their only experience is cars like this.

It's dead to the world. The wheels don't feel connected to the steering.. The ride is soft yet uncomfortable. The seats are horrendous. I could go on but..nah. One thing it does have going for it..I can't empty it of petrol!

Besides being the worst plastic made car I've ever been in, the pedals and tiny and in suit shoes you're toe would rub off the steering rack! Lol

    Alfa 166,
Big bills for small problems even when doing work myself. It was relatively new though & parts were only available at dealers mostly.
Lovely car though. If the sump didnt bang off the ground, it would be much better.
Would make a good cheap buy now though as loads of them around for parts. It was excellent electrically

the worst was a 00 nissan primera 2.0tdi horrible to drive, horrible inside but i made a grand on it trading it in to a vw garage a year later, the sales man though it was a 01 until i dropped it off but the deal was already done:D:D

    99 Peugeot 106, 1.1

First car, and first lesson learned.
Fuel pump was gone when i got it (atleast i think thats what it was) nobody could seem to figure it out and main dealer wanted "anything upwards of 500 quid" to diagnose and fix the problem so just had to live with it. so unless it was full to the brim with petrol id be sitting there for God knows how long turning the engine over.
was verrry embarassing aon many many occasions

Went through around 4 tyres in less than 6 months, partly my fault also the car refused to keep the tracking straight.

Died on the way home from limerick one evening for no aparent reason but was ok as it sprung back to life just as someone came to collect me (after an hour of waiting)

    Accelerator cable snapped TWICE!
Followed by the clutch cable snapping. Peugeot couldnt seem to supply me with a clutch cable that my mechanic could fit but said they would fit it for me for an hours labour. Didnt bother as my patients with it had worn out. Im sure there was a few more things i cant think of aswel...

Oh yeah i think the head gasket was about to kick it when i was getting rid

On top of all this the pedals were tiny and way to close together, and the seats broke your back even on half hour journeys.
However was quite nippy for what it was and handled relatively well

Sooo after about 5 and a half months i had to accept defeat, threw the new clutch cable in the boot and sold it to a fella who drove down from kildare and towed it home in a 206:rolleyes:

Most unreliable car ive ever come across and unfortunately I happend to own it myself. Better off to get these mistakes out of the way early and look on the bright side:o Still loved it though and had some cracking fun in her

Depends on what you mean by worst.

The least reliable car had to be my 89 Mini City. I only had it for about 6 months, but was lucky to go a week without problems. I loved it though.

The car I just liked the least was my 99 Mark IV 1.4 Golf. I didn't have any major issues with it - one common one was a sticky throttle problem, which could make it interesting when trying to pull out on to a main road. Overall it was just a sluggish, overpriced and overrated car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,863 ✭✭✭RobAMerc

CRX del sol - absolute piece of tripe. Knew as I drove out of the garage I should have spent the extra few quid on the MX5 beside it. Was sorry every day after.

I righted the wrong years later when I bought an MX5 though.

    Nissan X-Trail 2.0 Auto

Very comfortable car to drive and lots of extras. But boy was it slow. I had to redline it just to keep up with normal traffic merging into the motorway. It struggled to reach 120kph. I reckon it just had a lousy automatic gearbox. Oh and it drank petrol. 22mpg.

    04 Passat TDI sport. (B5.5)
Main beraing failed on the 6-speed box @ 64k miles.
Front and rear suspension fiailure (shocks).
    Window regulators.
    CV joints.
2 Alternators in the space of 4 months.
EGR valve was pissing oil when I got rid of it.
    I crashed it.
On the day of the NCT.
I can't think of the other minor issues that nearly bankrupt me but i remember quite well the feeling I had when i got rid of it. I hated it in the end. There was rarely a week went past when I didn't have something wrong with it.
    Bag of sh1t car.

Worst car ive owned was a 07 toyota auris. Handled like a dog, was deceptively wide, breaks squeaked all the time when reversing and to top it off because of the weird way the handbrake/gearstick is situated in a middle island yoke it was very hard to take off the handbrake on a steep hill. I bought it off a girl who was stuck on a hill because she couldnt get the handbrake off :D I didnt keep it for long, awful awful car.

    Mercedes clk200...

Dunno, just my moust unfavorite car i ever owned. It was grand as a car, but getting parts for it and price tags were just idiotic.... E and clk class were allmoust same, but anything that was for clk was 10 times more expencive...

i think i got it too soon for my age.. i was 22 when i bought it, and it was boring as hell... mechanicly car was grand...

Worst car I ever owned was an 04 Rover 45 Mk2. I'm not sure if it would have been good new, but looking back now, I'm pretty sure it had been in a bad accident before I bought it.

Aside from that, it was plagued with problems. It had a really random intermittent fault where if you put the windscreen wipers on the 'low' setting, it would trigger the boot release. Fun when you're driving at 120kph down the M50 in the rain.

It had the turning circle of a small planet, going up and down through the College of Surgeons multi storey carpark was quite an experience.

It was the most unresponsive car EVER, I literally had to floor the accelerator to get the thing to move off.

I ended up wrapping it around a parked trailer (don't ask) and my mum reckoned it was the best thing that could have happened. After I told her what had happened and that I was ok she went 'Oh I'm delighted! I hated that car!' She was convinced it was going to fall apart around me. When the motor assessor looked it over, he wrote it off because the airbags didn't deploy and he said that with the sort of collision I'd had they should have, and he wasn't happy for it to go back on the road without the bags being reset. I was delighted!!

I had a Fiat 124 when I first became a car owner. I got rid of it when it burst into flames (a blow back from the carburetter I think).

    5342676903_848dcfe7a4.jpg
    Fiat_124-Sedan by joolsveern, on Flickr
The Fiat 124 is a mid-sized family car produced by the Italian manufacturer Fiat between 1966 and 1974. It was the replacement of the Fiat 1300 and Fiat 1500. Today it is perhaps best known as the car used as the basis for the Russian-built Lada, which continues in production to the present day beyond the 124's discontinuation in 1974.

Thanks in part to the ubiquity of the Lada version in Eastern Europe (and also in Latin America and the Caribbean), the 124 has achieved iconic status, and if Lada production is aggregated onto the original Fiat production run, the 124 and its various clones is one of the biggest selling
automotive designs of all time - with over 15 million units sold worldwide.

'05 Renault Laguna I had as a company car, it was never out of the garage and everything went wrong with it. Turned me off Renault forever, it was quick enough in a straight line but handled like a boat, the interior fell apart, the exhaust fell off, it had starting problems, oil pump failed, fuel pump failed...... the list goes on.

Closely follwed by a '99 Escort, the worst drive of my life

01 VW Golf, it's a lotto to see which engine warning code it will throw up week on week..
suspension like and old couch, wishbone's replaced.
    Rubber hoses disintegrate
Brake lights have a mind of there own
Fog lights take turns as to which one works while the other take it easy
Boot lid lock has parted company with the central locking
Feel like its being strangled under acceleration..

I'm going back to Honda, even the badly maintained 97 Civic with 120kmiles i had was less trouble on a daily basis!

    Rover 414 ( Company Car )

I drove it onto the M40 when I first got it ( brand new ) and pulled over because I figured it must be broken it was SOOOOOO NOISY !!!!!!

    Hated it with a passion

2 weeks after getting it , it was parked up and someone drove into it , basically the car was totally compressed , the boot and half the rear end was gone.

The insurance said it was JUST repairable ( I was furious ) ... anyway it was one HORRIBLE HORRIBLE car.

Would go through stages where it just wouldn't start , then after turning it over for about 4 mins on the ignition it would fire cylinder by cylinder with bags of black smoke.

    2006 Seat Leon.

Bought it with 18k on it, 100k km later and 3 years (parked up for 1 year of that) it's had:

    An air con compressor.
    A gearbox.
    Lambda Sensor.
    Door seals.
Track rod ends (fair enough they wear).
    Interior locking switch.
The headlights completely rewired as it liked to blow bulbs fortnightly.
An insatiable appetite for rear tyres - one set lasted just 6k km. At €150+ a pop that aint fcuking funny. Using settings from another car at the moment according to the tyre place as this solves it:confused::confused::confused:
    Condensation in the headlights.
Dead flies in the rear tail lights (from the factory - wtf?!? Says a lot about QC there).

It's probably going to be fine now though but doesnt matter as I have lost all faith in it and all going well I'll have the new motor in the next couple of weeks:D

Unfortunatelly that doesnt change the fact that it was the worst car ive ever owned. pity.

Also a friend of mine paid big money for a low mileage '00 saxo which is basically the same car with a different badge. infact from what i can make out it is the exact same car.
Paid i think 3 grand which was back in late 2007 (wasnt actually that shocking if people think back to what car prices were back then)

Car had something between 55-59,000 miles and was mint, he also had it checked over by a mechanic and his dad who used to import lots of high end, luxury type cars.

Low and behold 8-9 months down the line, engine light on and that was the end of that, managed to get a few hundred miles out of it but was given its last rights by the mechanic so wouldnt have much faith in them TBH.

I had a Landrover Discovery 3 '06 model. It cost €40k as a Commercial vehicle. When it went, it was great. But it rarely went without a problem. I had it back to the Garage 25 times in 24 months before I drove it on to the steps of the garage, locked it up and left it there. For example the things that went wrong:
    * Driving to Cork from Dublin all the windows came down on their own and wouldn't go back up.
    * Sometimes when you were stopped at the lights, the air suspension would develop a mind of its own and start going up and down on its own.
    * The passenger door lock got stuck regularly, not good when you are trying to let your boss in and its lashing rain.
    * Electronic handbrake would stop working constantly and when you tried to release it, it made the loudest screeching sound. Embarrassing.
    * The radio would come on and I had to disconnect the battery to get it to go off.
The list goes on and on. I was glad to see the back of it.

That's actually a very good point. Whatever about a bit of unreliability from a car I love, I don't know if I could take getting let down by something I didn't even really want in the first place!

It was an 99 1.4 opel astra , just changed the timing belt, oil, and filters, 2 months later the engine seized at 93,000 miles.

Had it two years non stop problems and paintwork fading badly on a 4 year old car (at the time)

    Piece of crap.

The sh1tbox Primera I'm driving at the moment. It is burning enough oil to make OPEC worry. One return trip to Dublin from Mayo and it's bone dry. I was seriously considering ringing BP the time of the Gulf of Mexico spill to tell them I'd dispose of 90% of the oil if they ran a pipe to the car.
Worst thing is I was driving a GTI with DSG a year ago. Cursed recession. Don't miss it though........

89 Miny Maifair, bought it new with 90 km on the clock.
The rear windows wouldn't stay closed
The roof lining fell on my head several times
    Door locks wouldn't shut properly
But worst of all, under heavy braking it would pull massively to the left ...after about 10 visits to the dealer someone from Rover came to inspect it and found that one track rod was simply too short

It went like stink though and was the best driving fun that I ever had until I disemboweled it on the tow hook of the car in front.

Other than that never really had a "bad" car, just the normal kind of wear and tear when you buy old jallopies only
