I'm putting in an order for some ps1/one mod chips after the hols, just putting the word out to see if anyone is interested in having a console modified? Multi-region benefits, amongst others. Just let me know & I'll order the appropriate amount of chips :)

How hard is it to do the mod? Wouldn't mind a chip if it's handy enough to do myself, checked the old PS a couple of months ago and it's barely working with its chip.

I've only ever done a PS1, which was quite easy. This particular chip needs 8 wires soldered into place for full compatibility, what type of PS have you got?

Original Playstation with the expansion port in the back but it was hard-chipped inside. The console is pretty much fcuked though, takes about 30 seconds to load the opening to any game and actually doesn't read any not-proper games.
I should be able to pick up another console handy enough though so I'd take a chip and have a go myself. :)
    EDIT: How much are they?

    $4, I'm loooking at these ones - http://www.eurasia.nu/shop/product_info.php?cPath=52&products_id=278

Postal costs etc have to be factored in, depending on amount folks want etc. The more that's ordered, the cheaper it becomes. I'll wait a week or so before ordering.

If you could put me down for two that'd be great, figure out some way to get cash or something else :pac: Sorry for all the questions but I'm guessing this'll still leave it in PAL mode aye?

Ok so that's three so far.

Well this is the chip for PAL consoles, there are ones for JAP/US too. All media will be direct boot, so import games etc will boot like a normal PAL game.

Not sure how much I'll charge for installation, but it won't be crazy money given the cost of the chip etc.

I'd like to have a go at it myself so I'll find some way to get them off you. If you're ever ordering some for PS2 chips be sure to mention it here. :pac:

Jaysus, my PS1 is still modded since I was 15... Must have a dig out for it, although it's plastered in Rayman 2 stickers :p

I'll take a PS1 chip if there's an order going ahead

Would also be interested in one. Actually make it two, because I'll probably pheck up installing the first one! Will pay via paypal or whatever suits.

I'd really rather avoid ordering chips for people & then when I get them I have to post them on again...doesn't make sense paying for all that postage :) So if anyone wants a chip(s) that can pick them up in person from me that's fine, but if you need them posted on again your really better off ordering direct form the link above.

I wouldn't mind getting in on this as well if possible. I don't have a PS1 at the moment though. I've been checking ebay and I imagine I'll be able to get one without too much hassle.

Would this allow you to play NTSC games at full speed or would it be 50hz? I can't even remember if Pal PS1 games were all at 50hz. :o It's been a while since I've played a PS1.

I'd pick it up, just suggested in case you needed instant payment or something, sorry!

Nah, I think for $4 I can waive the insta-payment requirement :p If you can pick it up, then your more than welcome to pay on collection :)

If you haven't ordered can you pick me up one? Using my swap disk is a pain in the arse.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,151 ✭✭✭Thomas_S_Hunterson

    I can pick up too.

EnterNow, are you offering to install too? I'd pay, of course. My soldering is a bit iffy.

Havn't ordered yet, I'll give it another week or so seeing as the thread was bumped.

Yep I'll do an install if needs be. Priced roughly between €15/20 max, I won't know until I've done one and see what's involved.

It'd be pretty bad times if being owed $4 was the difference that sent you over the breadline threshold alright!

    Enternow,

Are you still going ahead with this? :)
I'm swimming in ps1's if you want to do a trade or something?

I don't have anything to trade really, no doubles at all.

Anyone able to tell me what the picture and sound is like from the slim ps1 consoles compared to big ones? Still good or is it noticably worse?

I am indeed, I havn't forgotten everyone, sorry about the delay. I'm a bit swamped with stuff currently, but I hope to be sending the order by the end of the week. I'll do a round up of the quantity before I send it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,316 ✭✭✭✭amacachi

2 for me if possible. I'm in no hurry for them. :)

EDIT: If you're ever getting chips for PS2s or could lump one in with that order let me know.

Rest assured, I'll never, ever be ordering PS2 chips. Out of the three I tried to chip, I killed two of them, & was successful with one. The motherboards are coated with epoxy which makes soldering very tough, & the points are incredibly small. To be blunt, they're b@stards to fit (unless it's a solderless type, which arn't great at all). Soft-modding is the way to go with PS2's ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 33,733 ✭✭✭✭Myrddin

Ok I'm sending the order tomorow. Just to confirm the numbers:

    Amacachi - 2
    o1s1n - 1
    Sean K - 1
    Joe Musashi - 1
    Retr0gamer - 1
    Martineatworld - 1
    Kerbdog - 1

If anyone is missing from the list please post up before lunchtime tomorrow :)

Ok men the order was sent.

10 chips for 8 people (myself included, I got x2) came out at $45 including delivery. So $45 / 8 = $5.50 each so thats about €4 euro per chip to us. Is that right? Maths isn't my strong point :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,335 ✭✭✭KeRbDoG

    $45 / 8 = $5.625

    $5.625 = €4.13184

So that'd be €4.13184 per chip, don't short change yourself :)

How might be pay you sir? Might you have an install service btw?

Well I'm kinda worried that if you borked one then it's not a simple install, as incase anyone doesn't know, the kerb man is quite a capable console modder. I fit one in the past though (first ever chip install) so hopefully it wasn't a fluke :D

I will indeed install the chip as an additional service :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 33,733 ✭✭✭✭Myrddin

Chips landed today folks. So if you want to pick yours up just pm me etc. If you want me to do an install, you'll have to bear with me as I've Augmersons MD2 to mod tomorr, & a rake of stuff belong to o1s1n (from next week I should be free) :)

No problemo, as I said I'm swamped at the mo (forgot I've an Amiga 1200 & a Nomad belong to Andrew here too) so it won't be a drive-thru mod :D

Are you sure? Well until the PS1's start trickeling in, & the caps arrive from France I'll start picking through your stuff.

Well there goes my €9.99 PSone :( Chip install went without a hitch, turn on the console & nothing. Verify the connections, all ok. Desolder some of the connections, two little ceramic resistors cracked & fell away (tiny tiny little things).

B0llocks anyway. Really not confident about doing more of these yet. It doesn't help that every install diagram I've seen seems different

Kerb - that PSone you borked, was that in the same manner? I wonder if its a lost cause could I pillage the two resitors from it & try restore my one?

Either way, installs on this have just been paused, I don't wanna break anyones console until I know what went wrong with mine. Stay tuned :(

**** sake, I want to play Tombi!

Seriously though, that sucks. Think it could be an error in the installation guide? Maybe the PSones have security inbuilt to stop this kind of modchip?

Nah its compatible alright, but installation info is so bloody sketchy given the age of the console. It seems there's all different points for different motherboards (this goes beyond the SCPH code).

Soldering is bloody easy too, those ceramic resitors are just not made to be heated more than once it seems. If I knew the solder points were correct I'd mark it down as an installation error, or a prob with the chip or something. But the info is so poor quality, in a knock off far eastern kind of way, that I can't be sure yet what the hell went wrong.

I'm reluctant to go again until I learn more, so I'll look into it & try resolve it. I don't really give a damn about my PSone (it was only a tenner), I just don't wanna bork anyone elses console.

I remember when I got my ps1 chipped my mate had just tried to do his cousins console with similar results. He said it was because of the pins. He thought that number one pin was in the usual location but sue to the dodgyness of the chip it was in another position. Now don't quote me on this as I know very little about these things but my mate knows his stuff and he was able to do mine no bother once he compensated for the odd pin positions

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 33,733 ✭✭✭✭Myrddin

That's very possible alright. The chips are cheap, but the same ones you get if you pay more elsewhere. It would explain the no bios screen even, god knows.

I'll scowl through some forums & see what I can dig up.

My mod turned on, but the CD drive wouldn't spin the disk. You could see the laser coming on but just wouldn't spin the disc.
I even removed the chip and still the same.

I'm fairly sure Ciderman wouldn't mind yea keeping his old 'borked' console now, I have another console which I have to pickup and another on route from a seller in Dundalk :) €10, couldn't go wrong!

Let me know what yea want to do - I'm traveling this week though, so it would be next week at the earliest I could get the consoles to you.

There's no rush at all Kerb, and if Cidey doesn't want the borked PSone I'll take it to try salvage my own one :( If it works Cidey, you will have levelled up by one free mod (in other words get that Asian MD to me for some free 60hz goodness).
