Is this supposed to be a 100 best books or what? I'd be surprised if most people had only read 6, very well known books - there's only two on the list I've never heard of.

I don't have the will to go through the whole list and bold/italicise them, but I've read 65 of those books, admittedly more of the less 'worthy' than the challenging classics. I think most people who read will have read more than 6, but maybe in the general population the average is 6.

I don't consider myself well read either.

36 I think. Don't know what the list is of, but I'm glad to see A Prayer For Owen Meany in there - one of my all-time favourites, along with the Dickens books. Some of these books I would never want to read again, Ulysses, Dune (awful), Lord of the Rings.

So what do all y'all think is the best one? I'm not a fan of Pride and Prejudice, even though admittedly I have never read it but I have seen it.

Ive counted up and I have only read about ten of them and thats not included the ones I have have tried but not finished.

    What is your number one?

I think The Wasp Factory would be my favorite. It shocked and confused the hell out of me.... (what the hell did I just read...did that really happen, rewind a few pages and ponder!!)

I've read 41 and there is a good few others that I have started reading but never bothered finishing. As my post above suggested, A Confederacy of Dunces was the one I most enjoyed. Not the best book on the list, but the one I enjoyed the most.

49 - a lot more than I thought! Not great considering I generally read between 2-5 books a week, but then again I suppose a lot of the list is down to personal taste and interests.

About half - 52. To be honest, I'm not going to read any more Jane Austen or Dickens or Shakespeare. Just not my cup of orange mocha frappucino. Must try to get through some of the others though. I have The Wasp Factory, The Remains of the Day and The Count of Monte Cristo on my "to-do" list already. Oh and Confederacy, now that parker kent mentioned he can't believe no-one read it :D

I've read 54, better than I'd expected. I remember seeing this list some years ago, when BBC were promoting "The Good Read" I think it was called. I found some great books there, including "A Prayer for Owen Meany" & "Birdsong" that I wouldn't have found otherwise.

I have a few more from that list on my "To Be Read" shelf, so will get to them eventually.

    I suck. Only 8

    However;
33 Chronicles of Narnia - CS Lewis
36 The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe - CS Lewis
    33 & 36 are the same thing.
The L, the W and the W is the first book in the Chronicles of Naria. It's like listing the Harry Potter or LoTR series and also listing a paticular book in series,
    BBC book fail imo

The list repeats itself a few times: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (36) is part of the Chronicles of Narnia series (33). Presumably Hamlet (98) also belongs to the complete works of Shakespeare (14). At a stretch, The Hobbit (16) might even fall under The Lord of the Rings (2) heading.

    missed you'd already spotted that.
Hobbit isn't LoTRs though :D, also jsut noticed I pasted the wrong list.

    Jasus -

I only have 11 on the list done and currently working through Ulysses at the moment.
Gave up on War and Peace - might go back to it.

And I am never ever ever going to read the DaVinci Code

    Books I have read:
4 Harry Potter series - JK Rowling
5 To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
8 Nineteen Eighty Four - George Orwell
9 His Dark Materials - Philip Pullman
16 The Hobbit - JRR Tolkien
18 Catcher in the Rye - JD Salinger
23 Bleak House - Charles Dickens (this one was missing from the OP!)
25 The Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams
36 The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe - CS Lewis
41 Animal Farm - George Orwell
42 The Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown
99 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Roald Dahl

Books I own but haven't got around to reading yet:
10 Great Expectations - Charles Dickens
    13 Catch 22 - Joseph Heller
24 War and Peace - Leo Tolstoy
27 Crime and Punishment - Fyodor Dostoyevsky
32 David Copperfield - Charles Dickens
57 A Tale Of Two Cities - Charles Dickens
58 Brave New World - Aldous Huxley
    62 Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov
71 Oliver Twist - Charles Dickens
    72 Dracula - Bram Stoker
74 Notes From A Small Island - Bill Bryson
    75 Ulysses - James Joyce
    81 A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens

I've read about half of Lord of the Rings but couldn't finish it (the movies were better imo!), also read a little bit of Watership Down but couldn't finish it (too dull to bother continuing.) I've read Macbeth, so I've made a small dent in the completed works f Shakespeare. And I've Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, so I guess I've sort of read Pride and Prejudice. :pac: On top of the ones I own but haven't read yet, I really want to read Midnight's Children and Life of Pi.

Someday, I'll get around to everything...

36 I think. Don't know what the list is of, but I'm glad to see A Prayer For Owen Meany in there - one of my all-time favourites, along with the Dickens books. Some of these books I would never want to read again, Ulysses, Dune (awful), Lord of the Rings.

I've read most of them, around 80 or so, but there's some awful crap on that list, and yet you pull out these three classics for criticism?
I mean, The Faraway Tree, Anne of Green Gables and Life of Pi are just so enlightening and profound in comparison, aren't they?

Low on the scale here, but over the supposed 6.
