If OK with the mods to open this thread to so we can focus on the actual temperatures (rather than snow and weather) during this exceptionally cold spell of weather. Basically just to keep a hard record of temperatures recorded across the country, where they be official or from personal weather stations.

Temps at Met Eireann stations over the last 24hrs up to 12 utc today:

Grab of 12.00pm met eireann station reports for the 28th November:

According the Evelyn Cusack just now on the 'Farming Weather' on RTE One. temps this morning broke records, with the lowest ever November min temperature recorded in the East!

    Exceptional times!

excellent thread paddy1. as you say it is truly exceptional. how is that time machine coming along? i'd certainly like to revisit this cold period in the future- say when we are being plauged by mild south westerlies with temperatures in mid- to high teens.

It is coming along great Nacho, in fact, unbeknowst to you and everyone in the country, I actually transported us back to the 17th Century. Unfortunely, wider culture did not come along due to a glitch which means we still appear to be in the present without actually being in it. Must work on that!

Still below freezing in many inland areas.

Went down to -7C at Killygordan near here at the NRA station, think thats as cold as it got here.

It really is unbelievable though, even at the depths last winter I dont remember it being anything close to -5C in the middle of the day

Bit strange when 4C is red on a chart like that . . .its more or less ''hot'' compared to the rest of the country!!!

Now the sun is going, the temp is dropping like a stone in water. -.2c to -2.7c in about 40 minutes.

I think we can safely say that we have just experienced one of the coldest November days on record with a certain 'ice day' in many places inland. Temps beginning to plummet once again now - down to -3.0c here locally and even lower in the midlands. Will be interesting to see if temps later on tonight and tomorrow morning will get as low as they did last night.

Hey Su, where do you get those precise figures from? Are they publically available?

    7pm Met reports:

    137081.jpg

Fairly steady in the midlands but falling elsewhere.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,138 ✭✭✭snaps

According to the IWN, temps already around -9c in places. Ive got -6.1c so far in the garden. looks like it will be a cold one alright tonight.

Hey Su, where do you get those precise figures from? Are they publically available?

Ogimet. Select Latest Synops, choose Ireland.

The temperature is in the 1XXXX group (red) and the dewpoint is in the 2XXX group (blue)

The last 3 digits of each is in tenths of a degree, and the 2nd digit is 0 for positive and 1 for negative.

So in the one below the temperature is -5.8°C and the dewpoint is -5.9°C.

The 3 group is station pressure, the 4 group is sea level pressure, 5 group pressure tendency, etc.

Has anyone got a link to the live Dublin airport weather station.
A friend has his own weather station and just phoned me to say its hit -8C.
He lives very near dublin airport so it would be nice to see it confirmed.

We have a paltry -4C in the back garden. Shorts and shirts weather. Kicking a lump of ice in flip-flops may have been a mistake though..

Just seen the 9.30 tv forecast, Evelyn now claims this morning's temps are not the lowest November temps on record at all. Sligo got down to -12c or something like that in the late 19th Century.

We went from a high of -1.7 at 1:30 to -10.5 just after six. It rose to -6 when the clouds and showers came, dropping like a brick again now.

Same happened last night, down to -9.2 at 23:20 cloud and wind arrived and it eventually went up to a more normal -4.

    Almost
    +0.1c / -0.2c dp
The 1 in the Dp figure means negative. 0 = postive.

I believe Markee Castle holds record for lowest November temp.

    Hi All,
I'm new to the weather watching game, but very interested!
Does anyone have a link to a website that displays live temperature/weather data on an image of Ireland? I ask because I don't really live near a weather station, so a map may give me a way to visually interpolate the temperatures to see what it is where I live.

I have a hand-held laser-temperature meter (borrowed from work), but it doesn't seem to work too well outside (It's claiming between -8 and -12c for tipperary). I think I'll have to invest in a digital thermometer/home weather monitoring kit - any recommendations for a reasonably priced gadget?

    Yes, it reads +0.1/-0.2°C.

I find that the updates are within 20 minutes after the main synoptic hours of 0000, 0600, 1200 and 1800. For the other hours, 0900, 1500, 2100 and 0300, the update for most stations comes after the following main synoptic hour (so the 2100 will appear after the 0000 report!) At that stage, each hour preceding 2100 will also appear.

    Confused? :D

It is a great site though, Ogimet. A genius, yer man Señor Ballestor Valor, and it's all run from this computer!

This morning 29th Nov, I'm one mile from sea.
2nd lowest air temp in my 11 year record.
    -6.6C, only 8th Jan 2010 with -7.0C was lower.
It wasn't a even drop either,
    -3.5C at midnight,
    -5.5C at 1.30,
-2.6C at 3.30 before falling to
    -6.6C at 5.30

Grass min of -12.3C is lowest in my 9 year record, 0.1C lower than 5th Mar 2010.

To put the air temp in perspective, the lowest air temp I've recorded in Dec is -4.6C.

Where do u get the link for killygordan?
Donegal isnt represented properly on temperture watch, malin head and finner camp are on opposite ends of the county, therefore our offical tempertures are actually a lot warmer than the rest of the county, Im sure some of valleys and other locations could challenge the rest of the country for cold records if met eireann had stations in the right locations.

    Yes :)
To add, they may not cover the full extremes. Some extreme coastal spots may see slightly higher or some inland spots may see lower maxes, but the range given should cover most of us.
