I made my way to the start with the Vaggababe relay team who were very sweet in offering words of encouragement to a demented Mr. Slow (I was the poster boy for taper madness). I could feel my heart pounding in my ears, my legs felt heavy, my ankles uncomfortable, I was doubting every aspect of my training. Then the gun went off and we took off, I spent the first mile trying to slow down and fall somewhere between 8:20 and 8:30 pace hoping to pick it up in the latter half (if I made it that far),

I was feeling great by 6 miles when I passed the Vaggabond at the relay changeover, he caught up with me before the tunnel having torn Claralara to the ground trying to wrestle the wristband from her. We chatted for a while and I was starting to believe I could actually get a result, a quick pit stop in the hedges outside the tunnel and I saw the 3:45 pacers go by but I was still up on them by 1 min at this stage (chip time) so I trotted along behind them for a while, met meandtheroad and we chatted for a few miles, I passed Chinguetti at about 10 miles (on his way to the half start line) and refused to allow Woddle ignore me, how he could pretend not to recognise me with 'Mr. Slow' on my shirt I don't know. I almost missed the mat at the halfway mark and had to hop on my right foot dangling the tag over it from the outside, none of the runners who almost fell over were very impressed with me so it was time to push on past the 3:45 pacers. I ran for a few miles with a chap dressed as Forrest Gump but lost him at a water station (he passed me towards the end running his 5th marathon this year:mad:).

I ran solidly right up past mile 22 so to answer pistol's question and quote Meno 'Trust in P&D';), the last few miles were really tough trying to stay within 30 secs of pace. Claralara was on the quay as I neared Patrick's bridge and the missed high 5 made me laugh through the tears.(I had gotten a bit weepy just before that:o) When I neared the turn I could hear the crowds roaring and the closer I got to the finish the more people there were and the faster I ran, crossing the line at 7:38 pace.

    26.42 miles in 3:43:12 average pace 8:27
    :D

Many thanks again to the boardsies in Cork for the words of encouragement and apologies for the long post which believe me could have been about 4 times longer.

I had a few pints with the gang and have to say really enjoyed every aspect of Cork, the crowds were great from the throngs at the finish to the elderly couple around mile 23 sitting on their front step saying 'hello' to all the runners.

Really sorry about that especially after you and your family gave me some much needed support at Donore. I thought you were just a friend of chinguettis and seperate to boards, it wasn't till you went by that Chinguetti said sth and I tried to shout after.

Congrats on the PB solid running.

Great running Mrslow, hard work paid off. I take it it's a bit thumbs up for P&D 55 mile plan for sub 3:45?

    Thanks Pistol.

I have the Dunshaughlin 10k at the end of the month, I'm pacing 2hrs at the Clontarf half and ultimately have my sights set on DCM and at least a low 3:3x!;)

Thanks Papamike, I ran to 22 miles comfortably so the 12 week plan works very well, I did add 2 x 20 milers to it though for good measure.:D

Sounds good. Still haven't made up my mind but looking at Runners World 3:45 plan at the minute or maybe P&D 18 week/55 mile plan. Have ran very little since Kildare half as have a couple of slight niggles (achilles and calf) that I am trying to sort out, not serious but a little tender. Runners World is a 16 week plan compared to P&D's 18 so the extra couple of weeks to get back to 20+ mpw may be needed - must start a log here for it as there may be others using same plan.

Finally getting to catch back up on people's logs. Well done, brilliant time. Will be watching to see how you do in Dublin. Think I might have to keep an eye on you now. ;)
