Hot on the back on the TF2 hat store...
Speaking of that, it seems as if my Tyrant's Helm and my Mann Co. Cap have been "shared" from TF2 into Portal 2, so I can sport them in co-op... I can only wonder what other hats are useable.

Through a bizarre act of fluke, I now own a PS3 copy. Gamestop broke release date. As I walked up to the counter to buy a copy, the manager came up and said they werent allowed sell the console copies. But somehow I got mine :) Henry St branch, still seemed to be up on Liffey St.

    CANNOT WAIT

    Price?

    Fiddy.

I know it will be cheaper in HMV but **** it.

I've got to wait till Thursday! Damn you pay day!

On another note, Kotaku are saying that the single player is around 9 hours long, and the co-op was about 7 hours long.

Think I'm gonna wait for my amazon copy to arrive, or even ship for that matter. What to do, what to do. If it doesn't ship by lunch tomorrow, I'm cancelling and hitting HMV.

Got to play about 30-40 minutes this morning.

More of the same, yes, with a few extra mechanics like the
lasers and floaty suspension beam things and crazy gels
which should allow for some interesting puzzles later on.

The extra characters are fun. Steve Merchant works very, very well as Wheatley. The pre-recorded messages are even stranger than GlaDOS of old. And
GlaDOS herself has become that very, very calm, collected type of insane.
    .

I'm enjoying it very much so far, and can't wait to get to grips with more of it later.

    But yeah, WTF with
online skin store for your robots? That seems awfully lame and cynical. It's Oblivion's bloody horse armour all over again.

I'll be very disappointed if that takes off.

Woked up in the morning and my computer was all "decrytping portal 2" and I was all *clicks play* and *plays*. Played up to the big switch then my ftp download finished and shutdown the computer. :(
Forgot I set it to do that.

Very funny and good etc. so far.

You're clearly unfamiliar with Valve's other game Team Fortress 2. They've had a very successful online shop there for a few months now where they sell weapons and accessories in the game. They also sell community-made items there and the fans who made those weapons get a percentage of the cash when they're bought.

It's been so successful that each of the first five community contributers got cheques for between $40,000 and $50,000 after the first two weeks of sales (and that's after tax and what Valve took from the sales).

Please note that all gameplay affecting items in Team Fortress 2 can be earned by normal play without extra purchases and none of the items in the Portal 2 shop affect gameplay, which is why this is different from Horse Armour.

PC has broken retail in Gamestop Longford, selling for a nice sum of 30 euro according to my brother

If all the other Gamestops are selling it will it be on sale for PS3 in Kilkenny?

Can you not cancel it and buy it in town? I've to wait till Thursday, and even that's too long.

Reading Kotaku and the ilk, apparently there's something of a OTT backlash taking place against Portal 2; it seems the great unwashed of the internet are getting themselves into a tizzy that Portal 2 is not the second coming of Christ. 6.6 on Metacritic atm. Bizarrely people are most annoyed about the graphics. The mind boggles.

Well, most bad reviews are based on the fact people have paid upwards of €40 for something that took them 4 hours to complete as well as being prompted to buy another €80 worth of dlc on release day

Although the reviews are obviously over the top and it'll level out over time, the complaints are perfectly justified imo

It's a coordinated 4chan thing, I wouldn't worry about it. They always work themselves up into a little tizzy and then move on to something else to whine about a few days later. They're just pissy about the completely optional and decorative DLC hats you can buy.
It's not day 1 DLC for maps, levels, features, or *anything* that will affect gameplay. It's little hats and skins.

Agreed. Portal was a very inventive game and it's good to see Valve supporting and tutoring students, but after you complete the game, it becomes as shallow as a completed Suduko puzzle. I cannot wait to play Portal 2, but I don't see how they can remedy the shallowness of the format after you have completed the game while creating consistent high-quality content. They can remedy it by creating thousands of puzzles, but the higher the quantity of puzzles, the lower the quality.

Don't forget there are two campaigns single player and co-op. So a very good player will still get 6-7 hours out of it and an average player probably double that. I don't think it will have much replay value, but I'm happy with ~ 10 hours of brilliance for €45.

I would have to echo that sentiment. If I hadn't been gifted my copy of Portal 2, I never would have bought it because €50 is way too much for such a short game. Even with co-op there, it's still a game with little to no replay value since the game can't really be any different.

Besides it'll probably drop to €30 on Steam within a few months anyway.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

In fairness, looking at the news of a new CoD mappack for 15 quid, people are clearly paying proportionally more for a lot less.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,507 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

I'd gladly have paid €30 for Portal. Yes it was short, but it was also one of the most enjoyable games i'd played in years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,732 ✭✭✭Magill

Well thats it isnt it... I would consider most people that actually take the time to write a review or read and post on gaming forums to be anything but a casual gamer. What might take 8 hours for average gamer on this forum to complete would probably take an average casual gamer twice that... especially with a game like portal where its completely down to a persons problem solving ability.

Most of those idiots on metacritic are rating it 0/10, numpties.

It's €35.99 on G2Play, and you can just download it through Steam.
