Interesting . . . there is now a coordinated effort on the Steam Forums to try and get people to stop playing the Potato Sack games. Their reasoning is that the "Axillary Power" potatoes will only kick in as an axillary source of computation power if there is a low number of CPU's running.

Thanks Valve for wasting my Sunday.

    I love valve.

This is really funny to watch from the side lines

Amazing; if I were a cynic, I'd make a snide comment about herd instincts and how easily-led gamers are. But I'm not, so I won't ;)

Hey, the one good thing in all this is that those indie developers probably got a lot of sales and exposure they otherwise wouldn't have received from the gaming market. So kudos to Valve on that front.

That's my thoughts on it exactly. I'm buying Portal 2 on PS3, so an early release for Portal 2 on Steam doesn't directly affect me, but I wanted to help out my gaming brethren and so I spent a lot of the weekend playing Audisurf, I bought Rush and Bit.Trip.Beat and just had a lot of fun with it. Not only are the little Portal 2 levels in those games a lot of fun, the sense of community in our quest for potatoes was incredible. I had so many people messaging me asking me if I knew about potatoes and what games I was playing etc. I spent a lot of time in competition with my friends to see which one of us would be first to get a potato in Audiosurf (we never did manage to get a gold :().

And you know what? I don't think any of that would have happened without this silly (futile?) ARG exercise. I never would have bought those indie games and I wouldn't have had all that fun. I also got a couple of excellent Portal themed tracks out of it (The Device Has Been Modified v2 is especially fun to listen to).

I think this whole exercise was a much more fun way to market the game then just a load of press releases filled with hyperbole - but I guess Valve misjudged the super serial nature of their fans.

I just don't see how people can give out about this. You'll either get to enjoy the ARG and get the game early. Or you can ignore the ARG and get the game early. Either way, you get the game early!!

    People are dumb :pac:

I needed an excuse to buy a couple of those titles anyway. I already pirated Defense grid when it came out, and it was great, so I felt kinda bad.

It's pretty cool in all honesty. Valve know us better than ourselves.

I wonder how many people have gotten the game from other sources rather than waiting for Valve to flick the "let them eat cake play Portal 2" switch?

I would never have discovered that The Wonderful End Of The World was essentially Katamari Damacy if not for this ARG thingy. I subsequently purchased the sh*t out of it. <3

Something is happening, the Aux Power gauge is dropping rapidly.

GLaDos is engaging the starch based power cells.

Haven't seen spuds consumed so quickly yet give such a bitter taste since after the great famine

    NINE?!

    Nine active test subjects? :O

The GLaDOS infected players are playing Portal 2 as we speak.

This is one of those times when I wish I had pre-ordered at the ridiculously expensive Steam prices.

Curse you PS3 version and your dual-format copies! Why must I wait for better value!!!

So damn tempted to pull a sicky tomorrow so that I can sit and watch the remainder of the countdown clock in my PJs!

The Steam version wasn't too bad if you know someone in the UK who's willing to buy the two play pack to share (£47.98)

she's eating them at a rate of about 10 per second. I estimate that she will burn through the auxiliary potatoes in approximately 10.4 hours.

actually 12 per second; or 8.65 hours. So there should be at least a midnight EST launch, if not sooner. Triumph.

The rate that they're falling seems to be around a 1000 a minute so i'm guessing it'll be out in about 6 hours... God they do know how to do viral marketing. :D Corrected, just read Overheal's post.

Typical. I agree to help someone with college grinds tomorrow morning, thinking the game won't be released till the evening, and they go and pull this on me.

Oh well. I suppose having science to do is as valid an excuse you'll ever get for not playing Portal 2 the second it comes out.

Since there is going to be a lengthy enough co-op campaign in this, I think now is probably a good time to connect with some boards based test participants.

Anyone needing a potential steam partner, feel free to add me, details in sig. profile link

I know I have some of you, but not many...

I would but I can't find you. Perhaps give a link, or add me from the link in my sig.
