a look I like a lot, is shorts (something like these or these) with a pair of tights or leggings, and some ankle boots.

really wanna get a nice pair of shorts for myself at some point

That's where you are going wrong, go crazy with some japanese anime character styled outfits and you will never complain of not having an idea of what to wear again.

All those japanese clothes are surprisingly expensive. I know a few people that go into for that kind of thing and they seem to spend all their money on having clothes imported and then altered to fit them. (Cuz most japanese women are quite small)
