The Woodwork Design Briefs were handed out today, so I thought we could have a thread to discuss our projects throughout the year.

Are you doing Higher or Ordinary Level? What do you think of the briefs? Have you decided which option you will be doing? Have you any concrete ideas for that project?

    Best of luck everyone!

    Ordinary Level.

    1) Design and make a decorative artefact to hold and display a personal music player.

The artefact should be lightweight, contemporary in appearance, and should incorporate a music theme.

    2) Design and make an elegant artefact to hold and display at least six eggs on a kitchen worktop.

The design should incorporate a theme to reflect aspects of Irish wildlife. The artefact should compliment the design of the existing kitchen.

    3) Design and make a decorative artefact to display a small number of medals and trophies.

The artefact should be designed to sit on a flat surface. The artefact should be elegant in appearance and should reflect a theme of personal interest.

    Higher Level.

    1) Many young people like to use a laptop computer at home.

Design and make a freestanding artefact to hold and support a laptop computer when in use. The artefact must be mobile and capable of being stored in a confined place.

You should demonstrate how you minimised your carbon footprint in the design, selection of materials, and in the processes used to manufacture the artefact.

    2) In an effort to raise awareness of the importance of forests and biodiversity, the United Nations has dedicated 2011 as the International Year of Forests.

Design and make an artefact which celebrates the importance of forests in maintaining biodiversity and in preserving the world's fragile resources. The design should reflect the interdependance of all life forms on earth. The finished artefact should be inspirational and elegant in setting.

    3) Young people often have small personal items which they wish to keep close at hand.

Design and make a decorative artefact to hold a number of such personal items. The design should be inspired by the natural beauty of wood and should celebrate the visual appeal of hand-crafted joints.

The artefact should be of pleasing proportions and be attractive in appearance.

I was goin to do number 3 but my w/w teacher said we'd have to do oblique or dufftail joints

Dufftail won't be too bad, once you take your time like.
I really do't know what to do now.

I haven't decided which project (Higher Level) I want to do yet. I was going to do number three, but I am terrible at coming up with different designs. I'll think about it.

Number two is good in so far as it is a very open brief and it's up to you to interpret it however you like.

i honestly dont no what number 2 is , 1 is the easyiest and 3 i dont really no

I'm definately doing number 3 higher level, The whole minimizing carbon footprint is fairly complicated and don't even talk about number 2 xD

you could say that the timber came from a close forest and didnt have to travel very far to get here and by that you minimize your carbon footprint, sorta

    All lies of course ;)

you just have to use a native irish wood, not teak or mahogany.

I'll be using pine anyway. Anything else and I have to source it myself.

You could also use only hand-tools in the manufacture of your artefact, except when there is no other option. That's the "selection of materials" and "processes used to manufacture the artefact" wrapped up - now you just need to think of something for the "design".

Salvage wood from a chest of drawers/chair/table - no carbon footprint in materials selection there.

I'm doing number one, Higher Level.

I've finished the first section of my folder - Analysis of Brief. I need to have three ideas sketched out for tomorrow, but I'm not very creative. I have one, but it's just a little table with four legs - hardly original.

On #3 they obviously only really care about the second part of the brief. Anyone with any skill at woodwork at all should be jumping for joy at that. Dovetails, Through Double Mortise and Tenons, anything that shows (not a biscuit joint). Get attractive wood with a nice grain pattern, maybe a knot or two and then finish it with high gloss varnish and you're laughing.

I have a design for Higher Level #3 .. Could I make Dovetails That are 100 mm long for the sides in total of one side there would be 8 100 mm dovetails but I need advice from someone Please

If your doing brief 3 you'll need to do fairly complicated joints like dufftail ones.

    Just curious, why?

    Read the brief man.

"and should celebrate the visual appeal of hand-crafted joints"

A hidden joint like dowels do not celebrate the visual appeal

Alright, man. Though you can do simpler joints that will still celebrate visual appeal.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 636 ✭✭✭anirishlad

Well if you want a A or B you'd want the more complicated joints.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21 crazy2

dovetail joints are easy. for my project im doing dovetail for drawers. finger joint for the top the through mortice and tenons. not all the joints have to be seen so you can use biscuits and dowels for some bits

I have an idea! Wahey! :pac:

It's actually my teacher's idea - he said my idea looked like a kitchen table and the other looked like a coffee table.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6 andreas1232

i found the best idea ever for no1 higher level, it lowers your carbon footprint with no screws, bolts , glue , varnish etc , its like a puzzle you put together all halving joints

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3 Timmy15

I found my idea for no.3 (higher) i think it is perfect, joints wil b shown and i'll get beautiful wood :), any suggestion for wood??
