    Thinking about this Hard Drive.

    Any comments?

2TB Samsung Spinpoint is cheaper, and most-likely just as fast, if not faster.

not all unices are gnu only linux and hurd. take freebsd for example. If it were Gnu then Apple would not have adopted it.

It took you two years to miss a joke. WP.

Was looking at that and it was 5400RPM.
I thought that would make it slower?

Don't tell me its like processors, where printed speed != performance!

Oh, the Barracuda is 7200RPM? Never mind so, go with that.

Spindle speed isn't the only thing, but usually a 7200RPM drive would have to be pretty bad to compare to a 5400RPM drive. My 1TB 7200RPM F1s (which are three years old at this point) are actually slightly slower than the newer 2TB 5400RPM F4s in my system. :P

It would be a small bit slower but the Samsung F4s are faster than most 7200rpm drives. It also has a better warranty and I'd trust it a lot more than the Barracuda if you plan to have anything important on it.

Warranty for Samsung drives are now only one year, in line with Seagate's warranties. :(

I've seen the Samsung drives being labelled at "Seagate Barracuda Spinpoint" now. I suppose this is the last generation of Samsung hard drives that we'll see.

I bought the 3TB version of it to replace a 2TB WD Green and have found it noticeably faster.

Its natural that the read and write speed should increase as density of the platter increases. The drives are rated for a specific RPM, therefore as density increases the amount of data the head reads per revolution also increases.

If youre talking about this, I can confirm that its not a samsung any more. i took the gamble on it for a build, and its a seagate (branded) drive.

thats the end of the legendary F3's anyway.

    Is this a decent PSU?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,600 ✭✭✭Eboggles

I wouldn't bother with it even if it was ok because you can get an XFX 550 watt PSU for €3 cheaper and they're great quality.

    Link here.

Well the reason I linked it is because it's modular and I would like the max airflow in my case, and modular helps with the case looks.

I think its time to go back to college and do a IT course but unsure which one

Iv been looking at course such as one in CIT but that doesnt seem to hands on with computers

I basically want a course that is hands on with computers, networking etc (not that into programming)

    Any thoughts lads?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

DIY. Most computer courses go very in-depth into theory which is nice to know, but doesn't really help any in real-world usage. You're probably better off self-learning stuff and going for A+ Certification or similar.

*Speaking as someone who's in the middle of one, they're usually not what you're looking for, though something might exist somewhere.

Your in a middle of a computer course, Serephucus?

    what ya doing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

I had been doing computer science proper, but I'm now doing it through arts (don't say anything). It's basically the same, just with less modules.

Covers programming (couple of modules), basic computer schtuff (you'd know already), OSs, linux, etc., and then a lot of nuts-and-bolts very low-level stuff. Assembly, logic gates, crap like that.

I'm doing I.T. Management right now in CIT it's a lot of theory as Seph has said above. There is one assembly module and a networking module each year. If you stick with it and do some extra work you'll get your CCNA and CCNP. With the option of doing the A+ certification as well. There would be 2 mandatory programming modules as well for both semesters in first year but it's just Java, and options to do Web Dev. For the 4th year in my course you can take the modules for Cloud Computing to get qualifications for that.

A lot of the theory is fairly useless, you might just be better off going down the route of doing all of the courses separately, particularly if your going down the Networking route, you'll want to get into either Security or VOIP systems.

Anyone got an AMD socket 939 compatible fan/heatsink they're not using? Either stock that you never used and put away or custom? Trying to Resurrect an old build - ripped the watercooling out - bloody fan I ordered on amazon turns out not to be suitable for 939 despite clearly being described as compatible.

Can pickup in and around Dublin any time - if it's a non-stock fan that's never been used I'd happily pay its current market value if needed.

    Anyone got one?

"Delivers at least 86%-88% efficiency on regular loading."

Why didn't they get it rated so? What is "regular loading"? I'd avoid it, at least until reviewers get a hold of it. I wouldn't trust the regular GX (although they've undergone improvement), so I wouldn't be excited about a GX Lite.

Finally got around to ordering an ssd and new hdd after using a slow and loud as phuck 6 year old 160gb hdd for the last few months. :D

Was just wandering if i transferred my games over onto my external hdd, would they still work on the new install if windows or if i'll need to download and install them again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

It depends on the games and the DRM/registry entries they rely on. If it's steam, you usually wouldn't have to download them as it'll just run a check to see if the files are still there and fix any broken entries.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,159 ✭✭✭daz801

    yeah they're all from steam

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

Just move the steam folder and run steam.exe in the new location.

Can anyone find a 120mm fan dust cover on HWVS?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭FlyingIrishMan

My PC has been running extremely hot lately. I'm guessing its because of the hot weather.
Getting temps of 65 for my CPU whilst only browsing the internet or playing Minecraft.
Whereas I used to get temps of around 50 whilst playing BF3 on high.
My GPU is averaging around 45 whilst playing Minecraft too and my frames aren't very good.
    Any suggestions?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

Do you need to clean out the dust from it?

Edit: Also check the load on the CPU when "idle". Make sure nothing is running that you don't know about.

put in shade, open some windows, clean dust from around fans, place case for optimal air flow

Yeah check the CPU load when its overheating. Check to see if hair/dust/dirt is clogging up your fans, or if anything else is restricting airflow. Open the side of your case to see if that lowers temps, as that would definitely indicate an airflow problem. If that doesn't help the problem is likely with your CPU fan. Check that its not running slow, or that it hasn't been knocked loose or something.
