Everytime Knights of the Old Republic I & II crashed. ie, every 2 seconds.

Think I'm gonna play this soon. Any advice on how to make it crash less(mods or patches)? Console or PC (I own it on steam)?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,352 ✭✭✭funky penguin

The patches for KotOR I make it bearable, but I would really just advise staying away from II.

Unless, like me, you're a masochistic Star Wars fan. :P

Then, I'd get all the patches you can and pray.

tbh, I'm not up to date with mods for II, so there might be something out there for it. The biggest problem is the fact that a good 1/5 of the game is just....well.....missing. It is the biggest case of money/deadline raping the fans of a series I have ever seen.

There is literally a moment in the game where you are suddenly on a planet with no explanation as to how you got there and what happened to you and your party. Lines of unfinished code can be found in the game. So frustrating, because with a decent production team and realistic deadlines, it could have been an excellent addition to the Old Republic universe.

Anyway, in summary, try I, then see how you feel! :D

Timed missions. All of them can **** right off.
Prototype though wins a special mention for this. The last boss battle, it told me i had to beat him in 3 minutes, and the clock started with only 90 seconds on the clock. It took me 3 months to go back and finish that game after I lost my patience with it.

Assassin's Creed 1 - All of it, after 20 minutes.
GTA SA - Having to eat, drink, exercise etc. **** right off.

Fallout 3 & New Vegas - not really a level, but this has happened me in both games. I take a nap somewhere, and wake up to find mercs or legion waiting to kick my ass, with weapons way more powerful than mine. Wake up - die, reload, wake up - die, reload, repeat until you fluke it..

I was going to post about 2 conventions in games (mainly FPS) that I dislike, but on further thought, it's more a love/hate thing.

    Conventions being:

The "room" that just happens to be right before a boss battle or arduous section that is filled with weapons and ammo.

    or

Midway through the game, just after you've hoarded all the best weapons you suddenly get captured in a FMV and lose everything.

I hate when they happen, but I don't think the games would be the same without them. It's kinda like my love/hate with cliffhangers. I hated LOST for it, but then it kept me coming back for more every week.

I hated the jet-ski sections in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

I hate this one. It's gotten to a point in FPS' where when I find a room packed full of weapons, ammo and health, I just think, "oh no!"

That reminds me, the snow mobile section in MW2.

    What a melt.

Darksiders - The final dungeon with all the portals. My god, talk about a serious change of pace! It's like the Rings of Pandora in God of War... JUST LET ME KILL THINGS!!!

Halo: Reach - Hunters. Stupidest enemy ever. Gee Bungie, I'm almost at the end of a slog to reach some checkpoint related to the story, what could you possibly do next? Oh yeah! Drop in two hunters. This happens over and over.

Halo: Reach - The bit on mission 9 with the tank. I'm in a tank, but it gets smashed to bits by turrets, so I have to get out of the tank and take out the turrets on foot before I proceed? Does. Not. Compute!

I actually like the Hunters in Halo games. Very easy to kill them - once you're in close just strafe in circles and shotgun them.

As for the tank level - I agree. There's an achievement for completing that level with the tank intact. My strategy will be to just not use it and hope that counts because it's useless.

It is pre-banged-up though, it's nto a brand new shiny one so I can sort of understand how **** it is.

The tutorial in nearly every game I have played in the last 15 years, I KNOW WHAT BUTTON MAKES THE LITTLE PLUMBER JUMP!
It was never like this on the Megadrive, Snes, Speccy or C64!

Dragons Age: The dream section in the mages tower is annoying and boring as well.
So God awfully boring and crap, I stopped playing the game entirely and never intend to go back. It just goes on and on and on, one big hazy, monotonous dream.

You should suffer through it because the game is actually quite good in spite of that godawful level.

I find Halo quite sluggish in terms of movement but yeah, that's the way I often kill them. You can also use a Needler to shatter their armour... If there's one lying around!

    1. In game allies that do feck all... they shoot, but can't manage to kill a thing!

    2. constantly respawning enemies until you get past a certain point.

    3. unskipable cutscenes, anyone play Black? 15 minute cutscenes before every level, if you die, retart, or just want to play it again... ending up giving it back...

Most SNK 2D Fighters: The bit where the main boss shows up.

I'm not a big fan of the Wind Waker until you get the boat. It can be a bit tedious when you are collecting the TriForce, but it's somewhat enjoyable due to the music.

Good old SNK cheap boss syndrome. And to think people complained about Seth!

any part of any game at all that has a snow or water level

The protecting Natalya and Jungle levels in Goldeneye, Natalya for obvious reasons but the Jungle level I was stuck on for an absolute age

Plenty of other games, a lot of which are already mentioned. Games with no saving and widely spaced checkpoints are a real gripe, nothing worse than having to replay a 15 minute section only to keep dying right before the next checkpoint

Fight Night Champion: The last fight against Isaac Frost, what a cnut to beat

I thought the fade section in DA was quite fun given that you could shapeshift between different forms with varying abilities.

the pink and white chick in the church with the talons in ninja gaidan black. I just cannot get her down past half a health bar and I must have tried 200 times.

    1. Midget aliens in Halo i don't know why, but they really feckin' me off.

I actually quite enjoyed that. My tactics (if you can call them that) are basically whirlwind of attacks, retreat and rest, repeat. The story mode made you actually think about different approaches to each fight.

He was a cnut though :)

Some games take story telling too far, literally hours of dialogue.
Dragon age,Mass Effect etc are the main culprits, i stopped playing MA 2 and the Witcher 2 as i just tired of the never ending talking.
If i want to watch a movie ill watch one.

The shootouts in Red Dead Redemption
Where do all these cowboys keep comign from? I'm in the middle of nowhere, I've just killed whoever and suddenly dozens of his GPS-enabled buddies keep streaming into view!

Why make the shooting so easy that you need to throw an army at the player in order to make it even remotely challenging?

    Final Boss in MGS4
Why try to shoehorn in a one-on-one fighting mechanic in the shape of really poor QTEs at the end of the game! Ridiculous, never finished it out of disgust.

    Pirate Boss in Eternal Sonata
No strategy involved, you simply need to be a stupidly high level so you can withstand her attacks and keep plugging away. Lazy design.

Fetch quests at the end of Wind Waker
What a complete ruiner to an otherwise brilliant game.

Last boss in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin

    What a difficulty spike!

On the flipside - I actually loved the Flood levels in HALO :) Really changed the fighting dynamics for a while.

    Insert any underwater level here.

Bosses in witcher 2. Very unbalanced, but game is very good.

Boss in k&l 2 - 2 dogs that you have to run away...

Retarded AI in RTS games gets to me a lot. One instance last night while playing Rome Total War with the SPQR mod. Siege map against Hannibal, ordered my units to form up and get their s*it ready, I look away at the enemy to see what the story is, look back and my infantry are running to the other side of the map in mobs, refusing to obey any move orders. Hannibal attacks in a very similar disorganised fashion and the battle just ends up a big blob of units. Lost more of my army than I would have otherwise.

Pointless AI in FPS games that shoot but kill absolutely f*ck all.

Escort missions or "follow X but don't get too close" missions that go on for years, only for you be caught at the very end because of some stupid reason leaving you back at the very start.
