although, i will miss the beaches here in south florida... any idea how long a drive from limerick city to bray? i fell in love with the beach i went to there :pac:
Big culture and Temperature shock From South Florida to anywhere in Ireland even in Sunny south east of Ireland.

Limerick City to Bray is under 3 Hrs drive and falling with each section of the motorway been built. I can get to Kiliney (South Dublin) in 2 Hrs 20 mins late at night from Rosbrien Interchange M20/M7.

There is plenty of Beaches in Kerry (Castlegregory, Ballybunion, Banna, Ballyheige, Inch, Rossbeigh Strand-Glenbeigh, Waterville-2 hrs) and Clare (Kilkee, Lachinch, Fanore,) which are less than 1 hour away (early in the morning - before rush hour traffic -outside the city). Google Earth is your friend for pics.

For certain Ireland is not short of beaches and great views.
    40838344.jpg

The downside is that Ireland will be colder than South Florida all year round.

As for Limerick City, Compare to the US crime is alot less than here even though we complain alot about it. I never had a problem over the years, even walking home late at night.

It's hit the news that Google has censored Limerick - http://www.limerickleader.ie/news/Google-comes-under-fire-as.6565468.jp

"Google - whose photographers were in Limerick 14 months ago using 360-degree cameras to take the images - has said the areas were left out 'for operational reasons'".

Is it poor form? Are the operational reasons that they are afraid that the car might get stolen? Is it a good thing that Limerick's reknowned areas are left off such a service?

I wonder how much those cameras and cars cost.

Would you(by that I mean anybody) drive all the way to the back of Moyross with all that kit? Unlikely.

We'll considering the European Google HQ is in Dublin, it would be a bit odd for them to be rolling in the aisles laughing at "the thick paddy" as you implied.

Are you sure as they are reported to employing alot of foreigners who can speak multiples languages in which google are looking for. It seem the report out recently that we Paddys are poor in speaking Multiples languages, As a nation, we can barely speak English properly, no mind our so called native language Irish that we are meant to know off by heart since Primary School. Never mind speaking fluently in other European Languages.
Google European HQ's are only here because of our Corporation Tax and we are within the EU with access to the Large European Market not because of our Language skills. They import the Language Skill workforce.
    http://www.independent.ie/education/features/why-its-really-time-to-mind-our-languages-in-schools-2357049.html
Figures from the European Commission show that Irish primary schools have the lowest levels of foreign language tuition in Europe

And the recent OECD report 'Education at a Glance' showed that the amount of hours devoted to languages at second-level in Ireland is around half the average, at 7pc.
The language shortfall has not gone unnoticed.

The powers-that-be in education should have been given pause for thought by a recent pronouncement by the Vice President of Google, John Herlihy
Announcing bumper profits at Google's Irish operation, Mr Herlihy revealed that of the 1,500 staff employed at the company's European headquarters in Dublin only 25-30pc were Irish.
The Dublin-based staff earn an average of €72,000 per year, but why are the vast majority of jobs going to foreigners?
John Herlihy said Google hired most of their staff from continental Europe, because of their linguistic skills.

'We are in the business of selling and customers like to buy in their native language,'' he told RTE News. "We have young Europeans coming over here who can speak four or five languages.''
The news that Google is turning away Irish job candidates because of their poor language skills is perhaps the ultimate irony.
In recent years, a complacent belief has grown up that students no longer need foreign languages, because English is supposed to be the mother tongue of the internet and the international media.

and holy $hit i don't think i'll ever be able to swim in ireland!!! i can just wait and go swimming when i visit family :P the coldest water i've ever been able to swim in was a cold spring in north florida that has a year round temp of 21 c...

the beach i loved (just in case you know where i'm talking about :P) was beside some cliffs, you had to walk down old stone stairs and a sand/dirt path. at the top of the path was a tiny rundown (woman's?) hostel overgrown with paths and it had one of those historic plaques near it. it was kind of hidden and was a 5-10 minute walk down the path... now i can't remember if this was only in bray or if it was at this beach too but tiny black stones along the shore

if i can find this beach i'm going to BEG alex that we get married there, if not then i want to get married in castle ruins  cheesy i know... lol

Just took a trip through Southhill, the state so many of the houses are in is a very sad reflection on Limerick. Many houses are boarded up downstairs only. Do people actually live in this? Why are they boarded up? Fear of burglary?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,612 ✭✭✭bullets

I am not offering any personal opinion good/bad/indifferent about southill other than surprise that over the last day or two, I've noticed people I work with were glued to their screens focused on virtually visiting southhill via google street maps.

Passing by cubicle after cubicle the first place after their own homes that people tended to be curious about was southhill.

It was very noticable with the lads in work that were
non-Irish they were fascinated by this magical dangerous place that was all so often in the newspapers/media that had such a bad reputation. The reactions from looking at the google map images was Shock at how people could actually live in certain spots and horror!! and that was from people who grew up outside of Ireland.

Isn't having your private window replaced by someone elses window an invasion of your personal glazing?

There's great potential for someone to mark out a "gangland" tour of Limerick, that people could take from the safety of their living rooms.
