I get that he doesn't fit the scheme, but it's a terrible deal for a guy with the record he has, and given the alternatives to an immediate trade. For one thing, it means we still need an rb.

Will that be Pace and Nagy first target in the the draft? Cohen will be very busy next season if we don't get someone else good.

Good question! I haven't thought about the draft at all this year, obviously because we pick so late, and also, honestly, I'm still only recovering from that playoff defeat, been hard to get into the bears again! If they find themselves picking an rb first I'd be ok with it simply because pace has a good record on mid round running backs. But I can't help thinking it's another example of them creating a need. I really think we need o line help, it's great that Kyle long is back but realistically he won't play in sixteen games a season. And really the problem for Howard this year, aside from scheme, was run blocking, which we really struggled with. A new running back will still be behind that line.

As it happens, my big dear on that would be what you noted, that Cohen could end up getting loads of carries. He is not built to take that punishment. Just have to hope trubs progresses in the offense and we can become more reliably pass heavy.

Best part of the D forcing 4th down was seeing this man dance his way onto the field. Don't think we'll ever see a player bring that much excitement to punts/kickoffs again.

I'd say the rules will make the job obsolete as time goes by. His td in the 2006 Superbowl was the first time I ever got excited by football. I just knew the bears were the team for me, and that they'd definitely be winning that day.

    They didn't win that Superbowl.

I know, I was joking. I "knew" it at the time he scored the TD.

Not a single fan will recognise who this is before reading the name under the picture.

    Phil Emery!

He has changed quite a bit in the past 4 years.

Not that I'm aware of. Apparently he started growing his hair & beard after the Bears fired him. Sort of like the David Letterman of the NFL :pac:. He went back to ATL as a scout not long after he left Chicago.

One of the Bears beat writers said he still ignores them at any event they meet at (Senior Bowl etc). I guess he is still a little upset with some of them for their reporting during the Emery/Trestman era.

Yeah if only the reporting had been a bit nicer his shambolic hiring decisions and free agency ineptitude would no doubt have eventually paid off.

The players arrived at camp yesterday. It's almost football time!
Anyone here interested in training camp or do you not pay attention until around final cuts?

Two guys I am looking forward to seeing are David Montgomery (3rd round pick) & Duke Shelley (6th round pick). Lots of the writers are hyping both these guys..Hoge & Jahns barely go an episode of their podcast without mentioning either.

Shelley was all over the field in OTAs/mini camp they said, and if it translates to padded practice/games he could take quite a bit of game time away from Buster Skrine who was signed to replace Callahan as the nickel.

As for Montgomery, the cool-aid is flowing. They say he looked unreal in OTAs and reminded them of the likes of Eddie Jackson & Tarik Cohen in recent years. You can just tell even from OTAs/mini camp he is a serious player. Can't wait to see him in pads, bouncing off defenders.

There's also the kicking thing which should be fun to watch play out

I'm still pissed off about the Howard trade, I still think they may as well have held onto him for the year and then let him walk or gotten a potentially better trade mid-season a la Jay Ajayi to the Eagles. Hopefully Montgomery lives up to the hype, Pace has had good success picking RBs in the later rounds of the draft.

    As advertised :D - https://streamable.com/rukeq

The kicking situation is looking positive so far. Both players are doing great in camp, especially when you compare it to how bad the Browns kicking competition is going. Let's see how they do in the games.

I used to try and keep up with training camp a little but these days I mostly ignore it. For one thing, hurling season is still going on, so football takes a back seat anyway. Also, though, reports from training camp tend to have absolutely no relationship to what ends up happening when the season starts. So reports on a given day that Trubisky is struggling to complete long passes or whatever don't really mean much to me, and often seem like alarmism.

On the other hand you always get these training camp hero reports of guys who end up not amounting to a hill of beans. Basically I tune in every couple of days just to make sure nobody important has gotten injured.

This year with the kicker competition I've been curious how it's going I guess, though the ongoing talk about the double doink and getting guys to try that specific kick all the time still makes me nervous that they haven't moved on from that day.

I'm definitely interested in how our draft picks go, but until I see them going up against real NFL players in real game circumstances I don't really think about it much.

The Bears' preseason last year was a particular non-event as preseasons go as the first team barely got on the field.

True. One thing about that, though, is that a non-event is probably the best case scenario. News from preseason is almost always bad news: injuries, in-fighting, scandals, trouble. And even on the field teams are increasingly just not playing their starters in preseason, which is great because the only things you get out of those games from what I can see is injuries, and breakout fringe players. I don't want Khalil Mack out there at all in preseason, and I don't want our Wide receivers getting hurt by roster bubble corners who will be selling insurance in a few weeks.

    That kick from 43. Iconic.

The series which ended with Montgomery scoring was fantastic. I have a very good feeling about him. Just needs to improve his blocking.

Montgomery held out of last night.

I know the current Bears management really don't care about putting players out there in preseason but that's a good sign for Montgomery's snaps in Week 1.

Tabor doesn't seem to have improved special teams at all. Still an undisciplined mess and the coverage teams have sucked so far.

He was the one coach I would have liked to have seen replaced after last season.

The only plus is O'Donnell has nailed every punt so far.

Cedric Benson was killed in a motorcycle accident last night. RIP.

Pineiro nailed a 58 yarder down the middle last night and was 4/4 overall. He has some leg, it's just the accuracy where he needs to be consistent.

So it turns out nobody liked Mike Martz because he was a stuck up ahole to everyone :D

    https://twitter.com/EarlBBennett/status/1167530949241901057?s=19

"Tell Mike I said f*ck him" is one of my favourite Cutler moments. The guy forced Angelo to trade Olsen who was Cutler's best friend on the team, and favourite receiver. Plus, he almost got him killed every week. The game against the Giants on SNF in 2010 is still hard to forget, unless your Cutler who doesn't remember any of it because he played most of the game concussed. Think he was sacked 10 times because of Martz.

Earl all but confirmed on twitter that Jay used to pretend the earpiece in his helmet wasn't working if he didn't like the play call :pac:

Good news is Mizzell is gone, finally.

Bad news is they cut Bars who has been very good the past 2 weeks alternating between guard and tackle. The decision to cut him has surprised most.

Pace must have his eye on some linemen tomorrow. Disappointed Bars is gone though.

I think Ryan Nall is still eligible for the PS so hopefully he's brought back.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,828 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

Was going to come on and say thank **** mizzell is gone, all day there was no word of him getting cut it was getting worrying.

Nall is a fan favourite of course but if I was him I'd be inclined to go to a different teams practice squad at this stage of he's to have any hope of progressing, time is pushing on and he is not going to stick here.

Heard Cody Parkey tried out with the Jets. He'd love the media environment there...

Roster looks very good. No depth on the O-Line but you can't have it all.

If Bilal Nicholls could step up and be a real thing that would be just great.

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,180 ✭✭✭✭Oat23

Didn't expect Bars to clear waivers but there you go. Happy he's still a Bear as he has a lot of potential based on pre-season.

Nall also cleared waivers and is back. :)

    OL, Alex Bars
    QB, Tyler Bray
    DB, Stephen Denmark
    LB, Jonathan Harris
    TE, Jesper Horsted
    WR, Thomas Ives

Thanks for the updates during the offseason Oat, I didn't end up watching more than a few snaps of Bears preseason total but kept an eye on the roster cuts.

Week 1 is a funny one because any predictions are such a lottery. We seem to be a bit of a known quantity on D, the expectation is that we won't change things too drastically. I'm not sure I like that if it's true. Pagano is an accomplished coach and hiring someone like that just to mind the tiller after Fangio left would be a recipe for disappointment. I expect there to be some changes in how they do things, particularly in terms of blitzing.

Still, the Packers are the ultimate unknown quantity right now, and possible week one errors aside I'm bracing for something like Nagy last year, where they have lots of tricks up their sleeve and catch us off guard a few times early. Hopefully we weather it.

And in the end, it all comes back to Trubisky. Will he have progressed in the offense? If he has, we'll know early and I think we'll win, because if he can get some accuracy into his mid and long passes that will open things up for Cohen to do his thing.

But something that's been bothering me...why is the Packers thread so damn quiet? It's not their style...
