I just wanted to check in and gauge the mood of the forum

I would like to know if people are happy with how things are running and if there are things that we can do to improve it for everyone

I recently introduced some rules to the You Laugh, you lose thread as I felt it needed a bit of direction to keep it from dying under its own success. Are peoeple happy with this approach? Anything that needs changing?

Aside from people suggesting more pics is there anything we can do to improve the Photoshop competition?

Any issues with the rest of the forum?

All input positive or negative is appreciated and will be considered :)

How about stickying 'You Laugh You lose' ?? :)

    Pretty please??

Flash games need a thread :P

The rules are good. Was getting annoying scrolling through half a page of bickering to get to the next pic, which invariably prompted more bickering.

I think it's a great forum and running very well as is. Laugh you lose and photos that shook the world seem to take a bit of moderation what with the usual bitches out there but overall this is an excellent forum, one where you coulkd lose yourself for a few hours

I love the cool vids and pics forum. My only gripe is the 4/5 threads about the exact same video. Can't be helped though :o

I wouldn't mind seeing a one pic per post (OPPP) in You Laugh You Lose. The re-posting is annoying but tolerable, but when someone uploads 20 pictures in one post and only one is funny its just a nuisance. I'm not saying "Oh only post funny stuff blah blah blah", its just I think it'll look better with one pic per post and it would leade to more pages and more laughs. The same goes for the Demotivationals. It's easier to scroll through 15 posts than it is to scroll through 40+ images while they load.

Sticky You Laugh You Lose already!

Merge the Caption competition into the Photoshop competition. It didn't really kick off as succesfully and I would rather see captioning just become an option for the Photoshop competition. Everyone seems to do it anyway, and seeing as we keep running short on images the Caption competition just cant last.

I don't mind the duplicate posts in you laugh you lose thread - 65 pages of posts, it is bound to happen. Can everyone remember them all. :D

An odd post appears blank for me, it might happen to others and unaware that it was already posted.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,630 ✭✭✭The Recliner

I dislike Stickies, I think they clutter up the forum

Given that You Laugh, You Lose is rarely out of the top ten thread slots in the forum can someone explain to me the need to sticky it

I will do it if the majority of the forum want it i just don't see the need for it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,879 ✭✭✭Coriolanus

I don't see the need either but that's cause it's in my subbed threads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,370 ✭✭✭GAAman

Just my 2c on the topic

I love the you laugh you lose thread and that is why i would say not to sticky it. The reason being if it was stickied it would stay in one place all the time near the top of the forum, but as it is bumped almost daily with new pictures it gets more traffic and more people think to themselves "oh actually that reminds me of that pic i saw today" which in turn keeps the thread going if you get me?

I would also say ( and i know it is more work for the mods) about the random videos posted. It used to be that if a mod saw a new thread with a video it was moved into the youtube mega thread but it does not seem to be done as much now. The place is fairly cluttered with single threads containing videos maybe bring back the moving vids action?

Bang up job on all fronts though :)

    This forum needs more porn.

Other than that, I'm happy with it. The reposting is a problem that can't be stopped anyways, who would search through tons of pages just so they don't repost 1 piture / video?

Well I may have been a bit lazy about merging threads lately, I will do a tidy up over the next few days

Ideally this would be great but lets face it people don't/wont do that and I don't fancy having to infract and stuff for people not paying attention to that rule and it is too much of a Mod overhead to split out all of those posts

I might look into this, I dropped the caption comp because it wasn't popular and it was too hard to find pics, this might work though :)

This is one of my favourite forums. I think it has an active community of its own outside of just being an after horus sub forum or just being a you laugh you lose conduit.
Frada kicked off the photoshop comp and that really has been a catalyst in getting this forum more views / threads / posters than ever before. Unfortunately I don't really look at a lot of the youtube videos in the sticky... I don't really like that sticky but others are subbed to it and really enjoy it.
I'm also really glad at what the recliner does for the place but it is getting bigger and more cluttered and I'd love to figure out some ways of combating that.

Well, that alone is a way of de-cluttering. I mean, the video thread frequenters probably are all subscribed anyway so is there a need for a sticky? Like you laugh you lose, it'd probably stay on the front page or two on it's traffic alone. I don't like the idea of stickying independently successful threads, it should be for important threads, like the Charter, that would otherwise drop to page 15.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,829 ✭✭✭lil_lisa

I would also like to see the "* YOUR INTERNET (YouTube/Google/etc.) VIDEOS GO HERE!!! *" thread forced to be used insted of seeing the same threads with different titles over and over again just for the same video.

I agree generally about not sticking successful threads however I think one of the reasons we don't get lots of people setting up even more threads for a video they post is because the youtube thread is so prominent

So I would be wary of removing it but I will consider unstickying it as a trial and see if it has an impact on the thread count

I do move stuff in there if I see duplicates posted, I may miss some but sometimes when something gets its own thread it generates good discussion whihc is kind of the aim of the site so I let it run

It is a balancing act, the Youtube thread would be ruined by loads of chat yet some vids require chat

Am open to suggestions on what is the best solution though

Despite appearing to be a simple forum it is actually a hard one to figure out logistically and to see what would work best in terms of structure

I ahve unstickied the Youtube thread to see how that goes and I have been merging new Vid threads into it

We will see what sort of difference that makes and what people think

Personally I would unstick the Bebo/Facebook thread as I am not sure what real purpose it serves

We could boot it over to this forum:

Seems more at home there than here.
An unnecessary sticky for us IMO.

Can I ask what are people's opinions on a charter for this forum

To be honest I would rather that we could keep it to the basic site tenants of "Don't be a dick" and "Don't post porn or anything that will get the site into trouble"

Given the nature of the forum I don't think there is much need for more than that but I am open to suggestions

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 17,137 Mod ✭✭✭✭cherryghost

Adding a (NSFW) prefix option on starting threads would be handy, and of course implemented in the charter, more of a request than anything though :P

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,630 ✭✭✭The Recliner

I fear adding a NSFW prefix would encourage some people to see how far they could push it

We had a few bans after we introduced NSFW into the rules of some threads

I think common cop on should suffice when starting a thread and if it is NSFW then put NSFW in the title?

Again though if the majority want it I will get it sorted

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 17,137 Mod ✭✭✭✭cherryghost

Fair enough. There's been a few links I've clicked in the past and haven't been very NSFW until the thread title was changed :p

I know but a prefix wont prevent that unless the person starting the thread is arsed to use it

We shall see anyway, it wont do any harm to add it and I don't think it causes any major headaches getting it set up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,370 ✭✭✭GAAman

I have noticed your work on the you laugh thread, recliner. It is a relief to say the least when you snip out the ones which have been done. On the other hand it is understandable that people have not been through every page of the thread to check if an image they have has been up already.

But its noticed and appreciated :)

Posting something thats been posted before in the thread isn't a problem, its when a re-post occurs within 3 or 4 pages of the first post.

That is a fair enough point man but i just think of it from the other side. Like imagine someone gets or comes across a funny picture, do you think they will have the time to trawl through all 187 pages just in case? Even the last few pages would be infeasible if they were in work for example.

It took me a week to get through the whole thread, but i also have to say people posting that it has been done just takes away from the thread itself i would delete these posts and do as the recliner has done to snip the reoccurring images and put in the edit line the reason.

I never said they had to trawl through the entire thread, my point was that it makes sense that there would be re-posts in a picture thread going on for 187 pages. Re-posts in a thread that size are to be expected, and if they are around 7 or 8 or more pages apart then I doubt anyone takes notice.

The last few pages is not infeasible. You find a funny picture and you post it, its not a mad dash like "OMG I HAVE TO POST THIS NOW! I FOUND IT!" I used to be like that when I started posting here, and then I copped on and realised other people use the internet and find funny images. When you do check the thread after a day or two theres normally an extra 2 or 3 pages added, so you're going to click through them anyway and see whats been posted. Its not unfeasable to expect someone to click through 4 or 5 pages to see if their image or video is there, if anything theyd get more fun out of it.

If you find a video, picture or news story online and you want to post it as a new thread, you check the forum first and see if its been posted already. Common boardsie sense. I'm not expecting anyone to search through the thread for their image, and you wouldnt expect anyone to trawl through the pages on a forum to see if their thread was started already.

And yes, everytime I now see "It's been done.", I die a little inside. :(

Just a thought, but would it be handy to sticky the Photoshop Picture Suggestion thread when we start to run low on images? It seems to just fall right down the list once Tuesday comes around. I'd suggest even using some of the images from You Laugh You lose if they don't have text in them.
Also thought about what would happen if Laugh You Lose became a no chat thread? Case and point, http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055873286&page=186 , quoting just to tell someone their picture isn't funny. If you want to chat, do it with another image maybe? Something along the lines of "I AM DISAPOINT" or "I LOST" or even "NOT FUNNY" as the case may be. Theres plenty of these images floating around the web.

    I've started a sticky here:

So let's just write a damn charter and put any good rules of thumb in there. We can just link to the parent forum charter for the rules and what not but rules specific to here should have a sticky.

The only problem I had with the You Laugh You Lose thread was when people would quote a post containing six or seven pictures just to say "I lost so badly", rather than just thanking the original post. This issue has been addressed in one of the mod notes so hopefully it won't happen as much. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,127 ✭✭✭✭Leeg17

Just keep up the good work really, especially Recliner, alot of the posts in YLYL thread are edited for being quoted large images / reposts, it's really appreciated.

Have to say this is one of the best forums here imo. Good for passing a boring weeknight.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,689 ✭✭✭✭OutlawPete

One idea for the photocomp suggestion thread would be that each week, the previous week's suggestions be deleted when the new comp starts.

Reason being that sometimes people continue to thank suggestions from the week before. There is only seven or eight suggestions each week so it wouldn't big too time consuming and would just make it clear which pics are in the running.

When Frada started the comp he also sported a Banner Sig that linked to the Photocomp, so thought maybe we could get a few of us to do the same?

Maybe a side comp to design a banner for it and maybe also for the forum itself perhaps?

Ranting & Raving had a similar thread.

I'd also think there could be an issue with the thanks feature in the Comp thread, as my entires seemed to get thanked far less than others, might be a glitch of some kind there that could be looked into maybe.

Other than that, great forum and well moderated.

On the thanks thing I don't see how there could be a problem, it is a different thread each week and I can see the thanks button on each of your posts, I think thanks works at a forum level so I would imagine that if you were experiencing a problem that everybody else would be too

If you genuinely think there is a problem and I am missing something then I would suggest starting a thread in the Site Development forum and Ross and Connor can have a look

It is tempting and I agree that it is unecessary to comment and say you didn't find it funny or just be bitchy about somebody posting something in the wrong thread etc

I generally just delete such comments as I come across them and people are very helpful in reporting them (Thanks guys and Girls) but obviously they might get left up for a while before that

My reasoning behind resisting banning of chat is that sometimes there are very funny updates or replies to pics which can even make the unfunny ones funny and I would be loathe to lose that, also if someone doesn't get a pic/meme people are very helpful in explaining it and i wouldn't want to lost that

I anyone else wants to post their views here then feel free, I will probably post up a poll in a few days and try and get a concensus

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 910 ✭✭✭Jagera

Not sure where to put general feedback for a particular thread - with "no chat" allowed - so picked here..

Is it possible to split the "you laugh you lose" thread? The meme posts are just monopolizing it now. Give them their own thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 730 ✭✭✭antomagoo

Any chance we could keep the photoshop comp for pictures that are actually photoshopped? It tends to get alot of caption & storyboard entries. And while some of them are very funny I think they take away from the entries that people spend time photoshopping.

Maybe have a caption comp run along aside the photoshop comp using the same images but seperate thread?

Can a seperate thread for rage comics be made so as to declutter the YLYL thread like there is the demoticational thread?

There are just too many of them and lines seem pretty drawn on those who hate them and those that like them.

Considering how many thanks they get, I'd say a lot of people still like them.
