Yep. I'd very much agree with you on that one.

Marty read out a rather wordy contribution this morning of a 'story' about someone wanting to go on holidays to Thailand without his wife and ultimately being denied the pleasure. It was on just coming up to 9am.

At the end of it he said thanks to the writer 'Hugo' for the piece...

    Thank you 'tallpaul' .

For anyone who missed this gem, (or simply wants to savour it again) :

And, since I have quill in hand - may I submit that this is a thread that does not deserve the neglect heaped upon it of late.

I believe that the Pagodas in Thailand are a big draw and a PLEASURE to behold.. Even my wife might be interested. Was that the problem?

Has someone told the Director General about this? It's a disgrace Joe, the tax-paying public deserve better, would somebody please think of the children!!!!! :P

Doesn't anybody find it strange that all the people who despise Marty with a passion, also listen to every word he utters like their lives depended on it.

There is an off button folks, or a tuning knob so you can listen to something else, we still live in a free world (nearly). It's just a bloody radio programme!

Who's slagging off Marty? Not TallPaul anyway. I think you're confused...have you ever heard of Hugo? He was a big deal around this thread for a time there...

Ahem...since you quoted my post and then went on your little rant, perhaps I might clarify: my comment has absolutely nothing to do with Marty Whelan's performance in the morning but everything to do with a certain, now banned, poster on this thread who shares the same name as the author of the piece I referred to above.

It might be useful for you to go back a few pages and read this thread. Talk about being quoted out of context...

Ordinarily, Gloomtastic, I'd agree with that.
In this case there's a bit more to it than that. RTE made a committment to run a network devoted to mainly Classical and Specialist music - e.g. some Jazz, World, Contemporary etc. Bearing in mind that a station like this would not happen in the private sector.
Then they foist the moustachioed marvel on a listenership that has been built up on mainly Classical etc. for the previous 11 years. That in itself is not the worst aspect of it. It's the total contempt towards listeners in letting this guy play pretty much what ever he wants with a small number of the most basic and overplayed classical pieces interspersed.
The fact that he can not accurately credit a classical piece or its performers after THREE YEARS on the station is salt in the wound.
In that time his impact on audiences on Lyric, according to the JNLR, has been mostly negative.
So, Gloomtastic, I'm afraid I for one must bear witness to the slow poisoning of a public service outlet.
RTE management must learn that what they are allowing to happen is wrong and is a dereliction of their duty.
Those of us who have complained directly to them have been effectively to go F**k ourselves. We feel impotent. This is not a bad way to continue to bear witness to theft and disservice by those who run Radio Teilifis Eireann.
We must continue to bear witness.

+ 1 on all that Timmy

That is the important point. Its about standing up for Lyric even if RTE won't. At least we record somewhere that we don't buy the nonsense that MITM is anything more than an RTE fix up for a loyal if mediocre servant.

+2. Mighty fine post there TT, summing up this whole unfortunate business in a nicely polished nutshell.

If the ICTU can muster a meagre army of 2000 to protest at the current 'austerity' (which is a nice euphemism for 'get back to reality' if you ask me), how many would turn out on the streets of our capital to make their sentiments known on the calamity being visited upon the public service radio audience of Ireland by the (mis)management on the bridge of the formerly good ship Lyric ?

Instinctively I still turn Lyric on first thing each morning in hope, but as soon as he starts to ape Terry Wogan or speak that pseudo, clipped English accent and mentions "the moro" I'm off and so is Lyric for the rest the day.

I find it hard to believe that all those positive quotes are genuine.
How could anybody enjoy listening to that endless, pointless, pseudo-cheerful twaddle?
Also, the privately owned stations have to commit to the BAI (Broadcasting Authority of Ireland) that they will broadcast a specific range of programmes and certain types of music; presumably to that the public will get some variety in what they can listen to. Lyric seems to be able to abandon its classical music profile and pump out any old rubbish, country and western etc. Do they have any broadcasting remit?

    Welcome aboard Spinoza.

Some of us complained to RTE. They write back telling you they are sorry to hear you didn't like the show but lots of people are giving them positive feedback.

In the interests of balance they should really tell the people who write in support of Marty: "Thanks for your support but we have a lot or correspondence from people who think he is total pants"

I hadn't listened to Lyric in the morning for months and tried again this morning - I thought he would mellow and adapt hmself to the rhythm of the station - he hasn't, he has got worse and he has those gobsh*tes from AA at it with him now.
Marty is like a contagious infection - he spreads inanity and draws close to him every idiot with broadcasting pretensions.
He truly is a blight on the broadcasting landscape.
    What can be done?

As an Englishman working in Ireland I generally enjoy the mix of genres and styles on Lyric, something missing from any station I've come across elsewhere, including BBC R3 which has become very strange recently.
As with many Classical stations there's too much of the dreaded jazz, and the apparent elevation of big band is a little disturbing. But it's refreshing to hear program's like Magic Carpet, which generally accompanies my drive from the airport on Sunday evening, at a prime time slot rather than stuffed away around midnight.
So, to MITM. Yes, I would prefer Como and Sinatra to be replaced by something more musical. Hugo is unnecessary, as are the incessant competitions. But in the context of a program when getting ready for work, and then driving, in works well. When there is something I want to stop and listen to it doesn't delay me overly, and otherwise it washes over me comfortably. I find travel and weather bulletins useful - I do realise that many people who are not travelling will find them annoying.
England has a station called Classic FM. It is the most soulless experience imaginable, with presenters showing no empathy for the music. And that is not something that Marty, or the other Lyric presenters could be accused of, and I think it is that relationship to the music that has brought me in.
Finally, MITM has also introduced me to performers I would otherwise have missed (as, of course, have MC and Nova), and whose music I now find myself enjoying regularly. MITM is not perfect, or anything like. But for me at least it fits the bill and I only occassionally switch it off in annoyance:)

When we gave you Terry Wogan, we didn't expect anything in return, let alone a shallow copycat!

A new low! Right now on MITM!!! it's 10 minutes to 10 and Marty is interviewing Red Hurley. Yes indeed, Lyric is making about a quater of an hour available in it's schedule to pay tribute to RED HURLEY. Marty has just played Red singing his brand new take on 'Va Pensiero' (Slaves Chorus). Red pretending to be a classically trained singer and a keyboard. Horrific. You'd hear better from a pissed punter in the back of a pub
Followed by Red and his Casio performing 'Angels Guard Thee'. Dreadful

Red Hurley is a fine entertainer in his own genre and in his own space but this is Lyric FM for the luvva Jaysus!
This is, in my view, not acceptable.
It looks like the presenter did a turn for his old pal to plug his Christmas show at the expense of the integrity of the national music and arts network. Shur what's integrity when there's a pluggin to be done. Any oul ****e will do.

Thankfully I no longer listen to Lyric, if I had heard that I would have taken a hammer to the radio.

After turning the radio on in the car to find 'Busy doing' Nothin'' playing, I wish to retract most of the positive things I said previously. Mind you, the very next day BBC R3 were playing 'poisoning pigeons in the park'! Madness. Actually, Madness would be much better.

In the past Whelan has never tended to last too long in any particular radio role before been removed. While his ejection from Lyric is long overdue I can see action been taken in the coming months.

If only. I am less optimistic. RTE management doesn't care about Lyric and the 3%. Its a useful consolation prize for the RTE family.

I can imagine a conversation: "We have to find something for poor old Marty. Every time I go into the canteen he looks at me with those big sad eyes and I still feel a bit bad about the way we keep dumping him. Dumping!!! Hey! What about Lyric?; he can't do much damage there and even if he does, who cares. All those music snobs being force fed Bing Crosby and Perry Como should be a bit of a laugh").

I won't start a new thread but on Wednesdays in work the radio is always set to lyric fm, and was off for a week. The question is where the Hell has Liz nolan ? She was the best thing about lyric.

The schedule changed recently. She's now in the slot formerly occupied by Niall Carroll (weekdays 4-7pm).

He took over Eamon Lawlor's slot presenting the 8pm concert. Eamon retired.

This retard has entered a class all of his own. This morning on the drive in I turned over. He was playing:

'Heigh Ho! Heigh Ho! it's off to work we go' from an album called Ultimate Disney.

He's taking the piss, some parody of the most inappropriate person imaginable to be presenting a show on a classical music station.

Lyric FM has turned into a bad joke with this clown.

    Sincerely.

I agree.. At the start I thought his mix of music was'nt too bad.. But the last few months, he has become a joke. Full of cowboy music and Michael Buble.. other rubbish..

I just don't listen anymore in the mornings. When sport, ads or traffic come on on MI I just turn the radio off. He used to play the odd enjoyable lollipop but when it finished, the "da da dum dah day" at the end ruined any enjoyment.
