If you can afford a laptop it'd be a good buy. A good memory key would be important as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 357 ✭✭cozzie55

If you are buying a laptop buy a good one. Don't buy the cheapest one on the shelf remember it has to do you 4 years. Expensive doesn't necessarily mean good other. I remember Dell did an offer for students when i was in first year and most of the laptops had broken by the end of the year.

Speaking from experience buy a mac if you can afford one. Got mine in america for €800 when they were selling them for €1200 here. Chances are you'll never get a virus and they are really easy to use. Just don't get the apple word processing package with it get microsoft word. It'll save you a lot of hassle cause the lectures use MS word.

Then again I may be biased cause I love my mac and anyone who uses it says its far better than any other laptop. ;)

A refil pad and a few pens possibly a highlighter will do for most of the year. You can borrow most of the books you need from the library esp if your in arts cause they need far more books than most other faculties.;)

A laptop would come in handy, but is not a necessity esp at the start of the year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,659 ✭✭✭unknown13

i recommend a Macbook anyway, i think they are the perfect laptop for college basic computing. The price is slightly high for a student, but it will last you for your full degree, rather than buying a new laptop each year. :)

I agree completely and i'm pretty sure there are student deals on the apple website too. i bought one 3 months back and i can assure you they're worth the money!

Yep... I bought a Macbook about a year and a half ago.. one of the black ones... and I love it. Takes a while to get used to em if u havent used one before or have only been using windows but they are the business. That said, most laptops now are really good so its win win.

Possibly you could consider getting a Netbook, they are cheap and lightweight, they will be effective for college day to day computing, word processing, web surfing.

most sport shops in town do them like cummins or mahers sports on north main street or else there is a cobbler across from the gpo that does them too!

Laptops are pretty important. As is a pen drive- Essential.
I've never handed in an assignment that was handwritten, they won't accept them!
Netbooks are great for carrying around but they are a pain to use when there so small. You can't type comfortably and apart from web surfing and maybe notes they can't do anything so if you need to run software get a proper laptop.

If your moving away from home, see what you need, sheets, bed covers, towels, kitchen supplies etc.. but don't overdo it, its so easy to have buy so much you'll never need it all. oh.. A George Foreman grill is pretty awesome to have.

People keep saying Condoms but you don't really need them, Nearly every college gives you some during freshers week, and then more during SHAG week.
From what I've seen, people aren't really having as much sex as movies leads you to believe... Every one I know seems to be in a long term relationship.

True, but if you do find yourself in that position at 2 in the morning, be prepared! ... (and I'm speaking to both genders here).

    Practise safe sex, people! ;)

    Not really, tbh.

People who are old enough to be going to college, or at least be facing into their LC, need to know about protecting themselves and others.

That said, I don't want this thread sidetracked into a big discussion of the issue either.

I didn't get that one actually! :pac:
Mine's a Samsung.. And it's red and silver.
Best of both worlds like! :pac:

Bet you're off to PC World to check for the pink now though! :pac:
