Has anyone managed to get their immunisation and such sorted out and sent off yet?
i'm still waiting for the results...

I've had a bit of a nightmare with it, but I've got an appointment tomorrow to hopefully get that form filled in and sent off. I just need the blood test results to be in order.

aye, mine are taking ages, there was no way I was paying 270€ in dublin to get this done when it's been a total of 40€ at home!

I got everything done except Chickenpox (the lab decided it couldn't run titres for some reason ) so the doctor wrote "patient says he's had chickenpox" which I'm now a bit concerned won't be enough. He also didn't fill in the MMR bit very well, but as long as whoever reads these forms isn't a complete idiot they'll hopefully figure it out. It's out of my hands now though...

just wondering, will we get to do placement in the first and second year? I'm just a bit confused cos loadsa people say no, it starts in third year, but does that mean we don't go near a hospital at all during the first two years?!

Oh and is anatomy a module for the entire five years or what? My friend says it's only the first three years.... Can't wait to start it though!! Roll on October!

When i got my blood test done i had a wedding that day and a big bruise, i told relatives i had to get tests before working in a hospital and they asked what for and my mam said 'to prove she hasn't got AIDS'....hahahaha

I called the Student Affairs Executive Officer, she said no. She said it's because there isn't enough time (although my understanding in the UK anyway is that you can have it done in 21 days, which I could have done). Just as long as you don't have it already.

no we just have to show that we don't have hep.
but we will have to get it in the future before placement i'm informed but we don't need to worry about it yet.
my doc was trying to get me to get the vaccine now just to have it done, but you have to get 3 shots over the period of a month and that's just not practical atm...

The only vaguely clinical thing you get to do in 1st Med is go on 3 "baby visits". You'll find out all about 'em soon enough. You won't actually be in a hospital at all though, apart from for a few random tutorials out in James' and such.

    First 2 years only.

You'll do Upper and Lower Limbs in Semester 1, and thorax, pelvis and abdomen in semester 2.
And in 2nd med, Head and Neck and Neuroanatomy :)

Wait 'till you start college before buying books - unless you are coming from abroad or somewhere where you can pick up books really cheaply. And remember Biosoc is organising a booksale in October anyway.

Oh yes, and 2nd years: Biosoc will likely be able to organise a bulk-buy discount for stethoscopes, so hold off on buying. (Unless someone wants to get you a fancy one as a pressie!)

Actually, it's three shots over the space of six months. The college health service will arrange this for you later during the year.

As mentioned above, the only patient interaction you will experience is the baby visit.
In second year you will be in the hospital for one day every week. You learn how to suture, cannulate, do blood glucose tests, perform numerous examinations (CVS, CNS, PNS, Abdo, Resp, e.t.c).

Theres no anatomy lectures after second year....:(
In reality you will be revising anatomy all the time. For my first week of lectures in 3rd year I revised a lot of head and neck anatomy for ENT.

My friend got the sheet when he handed in his blood results to the office (I didn't), I went back in and they gave me one. They had meant to include them in the orientation packs but they didn't get in one time.

They dont call part one of peer mentoring "Crossing the Desert" for nothing.
Incidently, part two is known as "The Paddling of the Swollen Ass".....Just thought I'd warn you

That's a lot more stuff than I was anticipating. Ah well, keeps you busy.

BTW - The medic freshers on facebook are trying to organise a small meet and greet, still hashing out details, group is here:

    Group!

    See ya there

I thought that was for internationals?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 451 ✭✭AndrewJD

Not really. It just filled up with internationals first because they got their offers first. We're all in the same course anyway.

It appears people are meeting at the Long Stone (on Townsend street, near Tara Street) at around 9 tonight, all should come.

what do we do about the conflict of the sports tour tomorrow on the timetable and the conflict on thursday between certs distribution and the course meeting?

From what I remember from last year the certs were distributed at the end of the course meeting

My assumption is the new stuff (I think it's intro to dissection 1) trumps the sports tour. You can get sports tours anytime.
