If you found a wallet with €2,000 in it

Not likely, but say you came across someones wallet with 2k in it on the side of the road. It contains their ID, bank cards, pics of wife inside amongst everything you'd usually find...

Would you do the decent thing and hand it in?

    Or go shopping?

OR take the money out of it and hand the wallet in?

    --

I don't think I could live with it.. I'd definitely hand it in.. Hopefully the gentleman would be nice and reward me for it. It would be a bitch if he turned around and didn't say thanks which is also a possibility.

So what would you do with the small fortune?

Post on boards and see what the general consensus was and let them decide for me.

    And maybe buy a PS3.

I'd hand it in but keep the pics of the wife if she's in the nip or in her sexy gear :p

Is the wife good looking and likely to be home alone if I were to return it - this is the crux of the issue.

I'd hand it in. Wouldn't be able to live with myself.

Although if it was something like 50 or 100 I'd be inclined to keep it to be honest!

    Id hand it back.

Presumably the chap would be so delighted that I would be rewarded!

Note: In saying that, I was behind some chap at an atm a couple of years back that withdrew about €500 quid, but left it in the drawer of the atm and walked off. I called him back and alerted him to his mistake - the cheeky baxtard didnt even say thanks!

I have been in this situation before. An elderly man left his credit union book on the bus with about €1800 in it. We returned it and it was definitely the right thing to do.

But that was before Natural confectionery co. fizzy snakes were around. They are scrumptious, so I don't know what I'd do now.

Everyone sounds like you'd be so noble..
I hope you guys find my wallet when I loose it.

    Honestly..
I'd probably take the money and hand in the wallet.
Karma bloody owes me some goodness from the last few years,
so I'd take finding a wallet as the universe finally rewarding me.

I actually found a wallet with €110 in it about a year and a half ago.

It had a guy's ID in it so I handed it into the Garda Station, telling them not to give the owner my contact details if he claimed it.

I don't know if he ever claimed it. But seeing as we're talking two grand, and not €110, I'd hand in the 2k wallet along with my details, and hope for a reward.

Imagine the guy was some kind of gangster

and that 2 grand is from drug money, how would you feel about it then

I'd hand in the cash but keep the wallet+ID.

may aswell put it to some good use for me so :)

Id keep it, prick i know but i think most saying they would hand it in would keep it.

a while back a girl did leave 200 in ATM and i went after her with it, dont feel guilt if i find it alone haha

I'd feel hard done by that there was only 2k in the wallet.

Thats a no brainer, hand it to the cops then when the gangster dosent claim it after the required period of time, it becomes yours. Then go to your local drug dealer and buy 1000 euro worth of high quality coke, then go down the road and hire the services of a quality street hooker.

There's no such thing as Karma, but there is a thing called being an asshole.

    So I'd hand it in.

    Cheeky litttle monkey she is.:)

It depends on my own financial situation.

If it was to happen to me now I'd hand it in with perhaps the hope of a reward tingling at the back of my mind. Nonetheless I could the self righteousness that would accompany being such a noble citizen and shove it in everybody's face :p

If, however, I was struggling to provide for my family it might be a different story. It might be hard on the old conscience though if there was a picture of his family in there!!

Considering the amount of cash I'd probably hand it in. A couple of years ago me and a mate were having a few pints in the Bleeding Horse and came across a wad of about 300 quid by the bar. I was tempted to pocket an easy twenty just to cover the few drinks but equally as tempted to hold onto it and get lashed for free, but my mate decided to leave it with the barman with details as we were on the move and weren't hanging around to see if anyone returned - I'm not sure why he did that, as I can only imagine what the barman did with it *thank you very much, fella!*

Hand it in of course. I've found smaller sums before that I have handed in, wouldn't consider keeping it

A wallet with €2000 walking around cash in it?

Financial loss is relative. I think we all know the answer.

Where exactly would you be handed this hypothetical 2,000 in to?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,784 ✭✭✭Superbus

Handed in a handbag in Subway the other day, always do that since a guy I know found €1000, gave it in to the Gardai, where it wasn't claimed, and he got to keep it.

Not that I got to keep the handbag.

tbh if i found two grand today, i would keep it. i wouldn't blow it, i'd get myself out of this insomniac hole of debt i've fallen into. :(

i was gonna hand it in until someone mentioned jelly snakes.

A guy found my lasercard there a few months ago which had two grand on it. He gave it into the bank, text him later saying thanks and I'll send him on some money and he refused.

So if I found a wallet with 2k in it I'd hand it in. Wouldn't expect a reward just a thanks.

When these threads come around I am always surprised and disappointed at the number of self-confessing thieves on Boards.

I'd hand it in every time. They may be in even worse financial shape than yourself. It may be ransom money for their cat!

True enough, i think considering the state of our economy and how bad itis for families, id hand it in, in the boom i wouldnt :D

    Hand it in.

My son found a wad of about 5K lying in the street a few years ago. (He was 10 or 11 at the time.)We made enquiries, and managed to find out who owned it.

Cheeky sod who owned it didn't even say "Thanks", never mind offer a reward.

This guy had loads of money - the reward part didn't bother me, but if I'd known he wasn't even going to say Thanks, I might have been tempted to give it to charity...........

It would depend entirely on my own financial situation.. If it happened 6 months ago, i'd have kept it. If it happened now, i'd hand it in. Karma owes me somethin good but i'd only take it when I actually need it.

As much as I like the idea of Karma, it does not exist. How would you explain bad things happening to good people? A topical example would be Madelaine McCann.

I personally do not trust the general public on such matters, and would let the gardai and the premises near where i found it know that I found an undisclosed amount of cash and will return it to it's rightful owner on request.
    If nobody requests...then it's mine.

I was working in a fastfood-restaurant once. (The one with a yellow letter?)
And one time there was this suit-guy sitting with his laptop by his side having lunch.

He walked away, and i thought "-Oh, well.. he'll remember he forgot it."

As i was cleaning tables, i kept an eye on the case, incase someone wanted to nab it while he was away.
Eventually i brought it back behind the counter, to keep it safe.

All in all it's been about an hour since he left. He came bursting to the counter and shouted: "-All right.. one of you lot stole my laptop. Now give it back!!"

Didn't matter that i calmly told him we had it in safe custody, since "-You forgot it."
Not a thank you, no nothing. Except a bleeping lashing out.

With that in mind.. i'm not sure.

    I'd hand it in, honestly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,554 ✭✭✭✭alwaysadub

I'd hand it in,or if there was an address on the id, stick it in their letterbox if it was close.

I'm too honest for my own good sometimes.

Mate of mine used to work in C0ppers.

Regularly he would find all sorts of things and just keep them - guilt free too.

That man never suffered bad karma

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 245 ✭✭Insane Rambling

Lost my wallet a few years back, I was going christmas shopping, 500 punts. No ID, bank card or any means of identifying who it belonged to. Was gutted.

3 weeks later I get a call from a mate who happened to be reading the lost / found section of the local paper and there was an ad for a wallet that was found.

Called the number and described the wallet to the lady on the other end of the line and arranged to meet her. Tried to give her 100 quid for finding it but she wouldn't take it.

Long story short, I'd keep the 2k, F**k them !

I would hand it in to the Gardai. There could be a reward - probably wouldn't be close to the €2,000, but at least I would've gotten it honestly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,472 ✭✭✭AdMMM

If there were pictures of children, I'd hand it back because he's obviously a family man (or someone pretending to be). If there's no pictures, then as far as I'm concerned, there was no cash in that wallet.
