The weather is set to play a huge part in the last of this year's majors according to reports and if the wind blows as expected, quality ball striking and the ability to flight the ball different ways will be the premium.

I don't often back Rory McIlroy at the prices he's quoted but I think this may be a course he could thrive on, especially if conditions are tough and I'll be backing him this week. Best price 18's.

Angel Cabrera is my rank outsider @ 125/1. Game looked in decent shape last week and as we know he's a man for the big occasion and well used to links style and windy conditions.

    Full Preview for anyone interested.

Really looking forward to this and I love the course, and I hope to be in Michigan next year anyway...

Looked at the odds last night after the WGC event as well as the 2004 PGA Leaderboard. Players who caught my eye.

    Ryan Palmer @ 250/1
    Jason Day @ 125/1
    Justin Leonard @ 125/1 (tied 2nd, lost in a playoff in 04)
    Bo Van Pelt @ 66/1
KJ Choi @ 66/1 (done well in 04)
    Jeff Overton @ 50/1
Adam Scott @ 40/1 (like Choi above)
    Padraig Harrington @ 20/1

I'll be picking 2 or 3 players from the list above for sure.

Choi is a near definite pick for me. Just need to see how he's been playing recently first. Not heard much about him and his form this year tbh.

On a side note, McGinely finished 6th in 04  I remember the 04 tourney very vividly or so I thought until I saw him there :pac:

Never usually a good idea backing a player the week after he wins a big tournament. (There are exceptions, McDowell being one, but they are rare)

A couple of rank outsiders for top 20's - Jerry Kelly and Brian Davis.

Davis regained a bit of form last week at Turning Stone whereas Kelly shot a -8 final round to finish T3rd. Kelly is a wisconsin Native and Davis had a top 15 here in the USPGA 2004. No doubt will be worth small stakes when the prices come out, considering their outright odds.

12/1 o/r is tempting, but honestly, hes gone to the dogs at the mo. cant see him being able to turn on the style for next week! i think he just needs to get laid, and he could get back to winning ways!:D

This must be the first time in 10 years that Tiger is not favourite and that he is a double figure price to win a tournament.

I posted this in the golf forum
As we all know the Fourth Major begins Thursday at Whistling Straits. Just had a quick look at the betting markets for a bit of value.

    Some that stood out are:

Kim at 90/1 - although he's just back from injury it looks a good price.
    Villegas @80/1
    Stenson @100/1
    Barnes @ 125/1
    Yang @ 125/1
    Jiminez @ 125/1
    Cabrera @100/1

Mahan would be one of my picks aswell this week but after winning last week his price has been cut. (Obviously but it's a pet peeve of mine.)

Don't all rush but Boyle's have a Money Back All Losing Outrights if Woods wins it!

I did laugh but I am foolishly tempted at the price. 16/1 with PP paying six places. That said I never eally believed he'd lost it until watching him at Firestone - a course he has owned over the years.

Can't be having Phil on a links style course. Too wild off tee and he was finally caught out on a tight course yesterday. Watch him romp it now I've said that :D

McIlroy for me too. Hopefully no more 50 mph gusts and 80 stroke Friday rounds. I'm a big fan of this lad and reckon it's only a matter of time before he turns into a Major winner. Reckon the course should suit him and hopefully this is the breakthrough.

Anyone else notice the US golf coverage showing more of the Euro players at the WGC? But even at that they missed the important play. They followed Luke Donald for virtually all of his Saturday round even though he was four or five over and only had one birdie.

I have just done my golf betting tips for the PGA and I'm going with the short game specialists this week. It'll suit the scramblers.

    Steve Stricker @ 28/1
    Phil Mickelson @ 14/1
    Luke Donald @ 50/1

Really liking Stricker this week. Mr consistency and if he gets hot with the putter, watch out. He's a local boy too which can only help matters.

the price keeps getting bigger by the hour alright! might have to have a t-nee, ti-nee nibble on woods. didnt know it was a links style course, will it be suited to harro i wonder? he was pure class at the irish open!

Choi is a near definite pick for me. Just need to see how he's been playing recently first. Not heard much about him and his form this year tbh.

i think u were on Bo this week just like me,happy days
Re KJ he's having major putting problems, backed him a couple of weeks ago in Sweden and was going well untill putter let him down on Sunday
good course form though so you can never rule him out
Brian Davis was up there for a while back in 2004,is much more comfy over in the us now than he was then,i might have a small one e/w on him,you would think though his lack of length would be a bit much

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,952 ✭✭✭Degag

Just had a further look... Mcdowell looks overpriced at 55s as does Daly at 300s.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,377 ✭✭✭Warper

    Went with Mickleson @ 14-1.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,683 ✭✭✭heavyballs

gonna do a few mad one's this week
Brian Davis @350/1 e/w,only because i backed him in 2004 and i think he's a good solid driver, not too hopefull though
    Shaun Micheel @225/1 e/w, ............................

Rory McIlroy: McIlroy is my selection to win this week. T3 @ the Open and should really have won it if he showed a little more patience. Another top 10 in the bag last week. Links set up will suit and I hope he has matured enough to stay patient for 4 rounds this week. If he does he is the player they all have to beat imo. 18/1 (Bet365)

Tim Clark: Consistent all year and has the confidence from the Players win earlier in the year with a major field. 94/1 e/w (Betfair)

Darren Clarke: Has shown a return to form in the last month or so. Likes a links track. Long shout to sneak in to the places. 200/1 e/w (Ladbrokes)

Brendon De Jonge: One of the most consistent performers on the PGA Tour this year with six top 10's alone. Hits greens all day and is no 1 on the birdies count on tour this year. Big breakthrough possible. 170/1 e/w (Betfair)

Surprised nobody has mentioned Harrington.. any opinions??

Playing a lot better now seems to be hitting form, loves links courses so should suit?

20/1 looks good, might get bigger tomorrow morning.

this is not a basic links, that's for sure, probably won't be mad windy for starters, about 20mph max,so i wouldn't just back him for that reason,it's a links style but this course is a bit of a once off,he's not hitting enough fairways to compete this week, scrambling from the rough from 220+ is a bit more testing than some of the spots he played from in Killarney and last weeks course played easier than normal so i'm not looking too deep into those last two performances

Yea I think he's in with a big shout this week.

Furyk aswell at 40/1, finished very strongly last week, if he's in the hunt on the last day he certaintly wont bottle it !

L.Glover is my outside fancy, at 125/1 is massively overpriced!

Can't be having Rory at that price. I think he's still a bit away from the polished article and wastes one too many shots when his short game is really called upon.

Good player of course but at 18/1 not tempting when Mickelson is 14/1 or the likes of Donald is 55/1.

only saw this now,f***,i picked him out also, you know me i don't steal tips so maybe we're on to something

i've already backed Donald and Stricker(nap)
For a few extra e/w's it might pay to stick with players that featured in the Bridgestone, good ball strickers will be rewarded, couldn't have Kim,Cabrera or Barnes

  • Registered Users Posts: 384 ✭✭badbrian

Have backed a few players at fancy prices to try and ensure some interest on final day. Totesport had some mad prices monday.

Justin Rose 60/1 ew (5 places)
Ryan Palmer 400/1 ew (5 places)
Shane Lowry 400/1 ew (5 places)
Mike Weir 400/1 ew (5 places)
    Cabrera 125/1 ew(5 places)
Stenson 125/1 (6 places) - didn't realise he had a some viral infection.
    Hanson 125/1 (6 places) -missed Ladcrooks 150/1.

Have backed Clarke (110) and Lowry (250) e/w to be 1st Round leader. Clarke is in good form but I can never forgive a final round implosion a few years ago in the States and don't believe he has the temperament to win a major any more.

And Just for value I backe Ross McGowan to be top European Player at 175/1 (4 places) and 50/1 to be top Englishman (3 places). He had been carrying an injury this year accounting for his poor form. He had 3 reasonable rounds last week.

Anyway short of me winning good luck all!

Tipped Harrington on my blog on Monday @ 25's mentioning the course and the fact it may be very suitable. Saw an interview with him then yesterday where he echoed what I said and he's confident enough he can tame it.

Hopefully. I could do with a turn around in my top 10/20 form.

Will be looking at a few players to miss the cut when the prices are out.

Stenson is still struggling with the virus he had last week where he had a nightmare and Anthony Kim may continue to struggle after a long injury lay off.

Haven't got today's Racing post yet but i know i won't be backing a European to win. Isn't Harrington the only to have won it since it became a stroke play event, even those that did win it 80 odd years ago or so were American citizens at the time. Could be one for the up and coming twenty something americans.
