Cheers for that lad. I actually travelled over to Barcelona to support her but whatever.

Of course she will have to bring her A-game. To medal at a Worlds and Olympics you need to run sub 12.6 most of the time. But she can most definetely do that.

    Gillick 45.79 for 5th today

I think I am in love with Allyson Felix!!

Not sure what to make of Gillys run there. Time not great but beat Borlee and Rooney which is at least something. Not a good lane draw for him either in lane 8.

Hesh didnt stand much chance in lane 1, and came 7th.

The provisional entry list is up for the Continental Cup in Split on 4/5 September.

    http://www.iaaf.org/mm/document/competitions/competition/05/79/73/20100813035146_httppostedfile_split-women-entries_21856.pdf

I had a look through the all-time stats of the event here:

    http://www.iaaf.org/mm/document/competitions/competition/05/79/40/20100809103225_httppostedfile_split2010_21818.pdf

And Derval becomes only the 5th Irish Athlete ever to be selected to represent Europe, after John Treacy (7th in 10000m in 1979), Eamonn Coghlan (1st in 5000m in 1981), John Doherty (2nd in 5000m in 1989) and Sonia O'Sullivan (5th in 1500m in 1994, and 1st in 5000m in 1998). So thats a great honour for Derval.

Her competitors are: Perdita Felicien, Lolo Jones (Americas), Nevin Yanit (Europe), Sally Pearson, Asuka Terada (Asia/Pacific), Seun Adigun, Gnima Faye (Africa).

It looks like a 5 horse race there to be fair. Can anybody tell me if they give out medals for this event to the top 3 in each event? If they do its another great opportunity to add a major medal to her CV.

Derval is running in Zurich tomorrow night. Great news.

Gillick seems to be down on the provisional start list.

Looking forward to it. Outside of the major championships the Weltklasse is the highlight of the Athletics calender.

Yeah i can't wait for Zurich tomorrow night, best nights athletics of the year, worlds olympics and europeans included. Always wanted to go to it but its a right pain to get there. Expect the usual 12.9 secs performance from derval

With the Continental Cup to prepare for I can see her end of season form this year being better than previous years. Also she hasnt raced in nearly 3 weeks which could be a good thing. In her blog she said that last year she rushed into too many races after the Worlds and didnt have much left for them.

I'm going to make a prediction that she goes around 12.75-12.80 and finishes about 5th or 6th!

Hopefully come Split in a couple of weeks she'll be running close to her best./ The Continental Cup is a unique championship and will no doubt be her only ever chance at it so I'm sure she'll be well up for that one.

I'd tend to agree, I'd expect the same 12.70/80 from her tomorrow night. I hope she can mix it up then with the best in the Intercontinental cup.

Horrible run from gillick there, he's finished for the season

  • Registered Users Posts: 437 ✭✭runjb

Yea very poor clocking by Gillick, a disappointing way to end the season. Going by his blog he seemed frustrating with his coach recently so it'll be interesting to see if any changes occur in the near future.

Derval produced a typical DOR post - championships performance:D
You'd have to admire her, she can really turn it on when she wants to!!

Deirdre Ryan the only Irish in action at the ISTAF meeting in Berlin. She jumped 1.85 which was only good enough for 7th place.

Whats even more impressive is that he has done that after World Juniors which he would've been peaking for. Also as has shown with a lot of athletes especially the likes of Gillick it is very hard to keep on producing good or even ok performances after a major comp (hes running high 45s even a 46?) and that is senior athletes so for a 19 year old to produce a run like that is special

I think his coach deserves alot of credit as it was the same coach who led Colin to the record which Paul broke. Great to see the talent coming through in the middle distance disciplines

Derval and Gillick are down on the start list for Memorial Van Damme on friday. The 400m on friday isnt a Diamond League event though so the field is a little weaker than it was in Zurich, while the opposite is true for the 100m Hurdles.

Not a good run from Derval, finishing 7th (of 9) in 12.96

Gillick was supposed to run, he must have pulled out very late on.

Steph Twell ran a cracking PB of 14:54 over 5000m. Delighted for her. She seems like such a nice person. Its impossible not to like her.

Oh and the BBC commentry team were referring to the winning time of 14:34 for 5k as not very quick!! WTF!

Good nights athletics from Brussels. Derval looked slugish alright, hopefully she can put in a good run in the Intercontinental cup, it will be her type of race.

Great run by Twell, I thought she was poor at the euro cross this year but she has got better and better as the season has gone on. Rudisha seemed to be toying with the field in the 800 and the ran away with it in the final 100. Good few PB's in the men's 1500.

Still not a fan of the BBC team, but at least athletics is getting air time which is the main thing.

I have to say I love the BBC's athletics coverage. I think Storey, Dickenson, Cram and Foster do a good job and know their stuff!
