So while the big show may be done and dusted, the season is by no way over. The one good thing about the earlier timing of these championships is the significant post-championship race programme. Plus, we've got the Intercontinental Cup taking place in Split, which replaces the World Cup, and will definitely feature at least one Irish athlete, Derval O'Rourke.

O'Rourke herself is competing again in Brussels in about three weeks time, as per her blog, while Gillick is racing tomorrow in Lucerne, next week in London and in Zurich.

A few Irish in action in Amsterdam today as well. Here's hoping for a raft of PBs for the rest of the season.

Fionnuala Britton continued her good form after qualifying for the Euro Champs final last week, with a first place finish in Belgium in 9.44.97. Only four competitors in the race probably ran it mostly on her own.

Martin Fagan ran a 28.46 10k in a tough road race in America this weekend finishing ninth behind 7 Africans. Only 6 seconds behind Martin Lel. The winning time was 27.40 from Gebremariam a guy who can run well under 27 minutes on the track. Fagan probably in sub 28 minute 10k track shape going on results.

Lucerne meet is on British Eurosport at 3.30pm. Gillick's running, I believe.

  • Registered Users Posts: 307 ✭✭TrackFan123

He got trounced, got won in 45.5x by a little known american, he was either 2nd or 3rd and i'm guessing ran 45.9 or evm 46. x :(

It was very windy though, the pole vaulters were abandoning jumps and Nesta Carter ran 9.86 first race back from injury!

Brian Gregan a PB of 46.21 in Brussels today

Betters has a PB of 44.70 from this year! Gillick ran 45.95. Michelle Carey clocked 57.87 for 2nd in the 'B' 400mHurdles and Christie clocked 7:58.* for 5th in the 3000m.

Gee, what a coincidence! He set his previous PB last year on the same date!

I hope a major championship 400m coincides with August 8 in the future! :D

    NO way..
I heard Gregan getting slated for his type of running by BBC and JK mentioned it.

What did people make of Gillicks run today? I thought it was good to see him back out there running. Its the only way the wounds from Barcelona will heal quickly, to get back into the thick of it. Onwards and upwards. The man will be back better than ever.

Great to hear of Gregans PB.

Well done Gregan. Only getting into serious shape after his injury.

Oh and Kelly Proper set a new PB and National Record of 6.60 in the Long Jump - also in Brussels.

God, the PBs are coming thick and fast today!

In London next Saturday, Gillick will line up with Wariner, Torrance, Bingham, Rooney, Borlee (Kevin) among others. He should need no further motivation to get out there and perform.

Hession also slated to run there, in 200m. Top class field featuring Spearmon, Carter, Bailey, Ndure, Martina and local favourites Malcom and Devonish. No Bolt of course (due to taxman) and Gay (who is lining up in 100m).

Great to see a rake of PBs from our elite - clear that they are getting straight back in to competition after Barca. Colvert is some talent!

God, the PBs are coming thick and fast today!

She can now head into the winter training knowing she is still a great athlete. Fair play to her to bounce back. I read somewhere that Derval O' Rourke likes the way Proper does things. They may be cut from the same cloth. Kelly has many great years ahead of her despite what the hurlers on the ditch say about her and her coaching setup.

Great stuff from Kelly, great to see that she took the positives from Barcelona and came out this week with a brilliant new NR. A lot of new NRs this year: men's 50km walk (x2), women's 100m, women's 100m hurdles, women's 4x100m (x2), women's 4x400m, women's pole vault, women's long jump. 9 senior records in one year is not bad going at all :)

Add to that NJR's from Mageean, Maher and Veale then its looking very rosy indeed!

Great stuff from Proper. Hopefully she can kick on from that and make further improvements next season.

looks like chamney is suffering from a major euro champs hangover while chesser is probably feeling the effects of a long season after a massive breakthrough at 1500m...thoughts?

I'm just happy Chamney is running again, it seems that he realised that the Euro's were not the end of the world and hopefully after a few weeks back into a proper training schedule he'll be back into under 1.46 and better!

I wouldnt say a hangover for chameny , he has been sick so would take a few week to get back into it, but not too bad a 800m to start with.

Tyson Gay runs 9.78 tonight in London. Fastest time in the world this year. Into a headwind aswell.

Priscilla (12.52) looked great in beating Sally Pearson (12.61) in the 100 Hurdles.

I tell ya Derval will need to bring her absolute A-game to medal in Daegu next year, as some of these girls look awfully good, but we all know she is capable of doing that.

Tirunish Dibaba makes 14:36 look SOOOOOOOOOOOO easy. Was strolling for most of that race. It got me thinking, how fast could Sonia go if she was around now, competeing against Defar, Dibaba etc. She said in her autobiography that she had a 14:30 in her in 1995, if she ever needed it. But she never needed it as nobody was good enough to push her to that level, so she only ran 14:41 that season, when she was at her absolute peak. So I've always wondered how fast she could have gone if she was around now against these girls.

Blanka is just fantastic. Had the HJ won at 1.94, but stuck around for another 45 minutes to enterain the crowd, in miserable weather. She is one of the finest representatives of the sport. Cant say enough good things about her.

Oh, and Queen Harrison is apparantly one of 23 children! DEAR GOD!!!:eek::eek:

Ah here now, lets not go OTT. Usain has run 9.58. Tyson has run 9.69. Bit of a difference there. I'm sure Usain can take his time down, but can Gay get below 9.58? I wouldnt be so sure. Both guys at 100%, there is only one winner I'm afraid!

    :

The time that is most representative of Sonia's talent is the 8.21.64 3k she ran. Gabrielle Szabo is the only athlete in history to have run faster and that was only 0.22 seconds faster (I don't count that group of Chinese women as athletes).

Her 3k time would indicate that 14.30 was in her capabilities. It would have been great to see her compete against the likes of Dibaba.

Well, they're there in the record books, so deal with it. Sonia did.

That doesnt mean squat! The East Germans are still in the record books, even after their system of decades of systematic doping was uncovered to the whole world.

Anyway lets not get into a discussion about the Chinese athletes. It never ends well.

Indeed 14:30 was within her capabilities in 1995, just she was never pushed by anyone into having to run that fast. When she ran her 14:41.40 in Berlin(which was her PB at the time, and she only bettered once after that, in Sydney) she said afterwards that she could have easily run a world record but she didnt get any help from the other girls that night (probably because Ribeiro wanted to try protect her World Record). If she was running against the likes of Defar and Dibaba nowadays, in her 1994/1995 form, I'd say she could run well below 14:30, perhaps 14:25.

So are Flo-Jo, Mohammed Mourhit and plenty of others who shouldn't be. The records books are meaningless. I'm attempting to compare like for like. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be dealing with.
