The obsession with Yann Tiersen continues... so hard not to just go and buy everything he has done.

This one is the last track from his album 'Dust Lane'. The lyrics are very crude and not at all what you'd expect from the type of song but it works and is a truly brilliant track. This album took a few listens to sink in but now a firm favourite (as happens with the best albums) and added to my discoveries of the year 2012!

His soundtrack work is equally amazing and where he is more known I gather. This taken from the movie 'Tabarly' which is the story of the French sailor who fell overboard in the 60s and came ashore near Ireland several weeks later.

Yeah have the Ride albums alright and only actually picked up the Boo Radleys last week, the 3 disc edition with various b sides etc - Lazarus is brilliant, love it.

Also picked up 'See You on the Other Side' by Mercury Rev - another surprise in terms of what they were at before they became 'popular'!

Working my way through stuff I've not got yet from this list...

'See You on the Other Side' is a bit of strange one I think. Very much a transitionary record and really falls between two stools. I tend to listen back to the earlier albums than the Deserter Songs era stuff. Yerself is Steam and Boces were great albums - totally out there.

I never really explored the really early Flaming Lips - I always had the feeling it would be too much hard work. I'm probably totally wrong and I'm going to rectify that over the next while and get stuck into it. But the couple of albums pre Soft Bulletin are worth checking out: Hit to Death in the Future Head, Clouds Taste Metallic and Transmissions from the Satellite Heart are worth checking out.

Saw Ride many years ago in the Buttery, really good gig, energetic and LOUD. I was lucky enough to see Mercury Rev around the same time, their early stuff is nothing like Deserters songs (ironically released as a "break-up lp, but brought them massive international success).
Never got the Boo Radleys tbh, but other stuff on Creation for that era is great like Swerve Driver and Slow Dive are well worth checking out.
Did you make Spiritualized? Absolutely amazing gig

Yeah I have a Swervedriver in the post, can't remember which one - also Curve? - again can't remember now which album, 2 cheap 2nd hand on Amazon marketplace purchases.

I love Slowdive - 'Souvlaki' and 'Just for a Day' are both incredible, not as pushed on Pygmalion for some reason but still enjoyable.

Yeah went to Spiritualized, brilliant gig alright.

I listened to the Boo Radleys album again this morning in the car and there are some really good moments and some not so good... I do like their dubby tracks alright but defo not in the Slowdive league anyway.

Funny story, I remember a friend of mine telling me how much he liked Deserter Songs and I told them they had a couple of albums out before it that I thought he should check out. I give him my (bought) cassette of Boces and told him it was a good auld album. I called into him a week or two after and he handed it back to me, telling me that someone must have taped over the album…

it must be nearly time for a shoegaze revival, such is the current cyclical nature of pop and rock
