Disable Woman 'starved after mother died'

Poor daughter, what a horrible way to go.

    http://www.gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=378203&version=1&template_id=38&parent_id=20
A disabled woman may have starved to death in her home after her mother, who cared for her full time, died suddenly. The 56-year-old woman and her daughter, aged 29, were found dead on Saturday after concerns were raised about their welfare.

Police confirmed ay that a post mortem had not found any evidence the pair had been attacked and that the deaths were not suspicious. Hertfordshire police said further tests were being carried out to establish how they died.

The mother was named locally as Stephanie Wolf. There is speculation she died suddenly, leaving her paralysed daughter unable to care for herself.

Police are also investigating the possibility she may have killed her daughter before taking her own life. The bodies were discovered at an address in Wheathampstead.

Neighbour Angela Goodwin said: “They must have lived here for around 15 years. The mother used to say hello occasionally but I didn’t know their names.”

It is believed the bodies may have lain undiscovered in the three-bedroom property for a number of weeks and had partially decomposed.

The alarm was raised by a man delivering leaflets who noticed flies swarming around the letterbox. There were reports that Wolf had become increasingly worn down by the burden of caring for her daughter.

One neighbour said she had become more reclusive and “very depressed” for the past year.

It was also claimed that three years ago, Wolf put a large sign on the roof of the bungalow reading “help”.

A spokeswoman for Hertfordshire police said investigators were not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.

Hertfordshire county council yesterday said the mother had refused the help of social workers. But a source said social services still had a duty to care for families who needed help, even if they refused it.

As horrible as the joke may be, I still smiled at it.

On a serious note, it is a tragedy that the daughter may have been killed by her mother, or starved to death. It is a terrible way to go.

One of the worst ways to die, and a c*ntish comment to make about it. Can only imagine the fear, the horror of slowly dying from starvation.

This is a horrific tragedy. Can we just leave it there and close the thread?

People make jokes here everyday of the week, all year round, about tragedies and mishaps of all kinds. Why does this one suddenly provoke outrage where others are just accepted?

It's the fact that an elderly woman died, her disabled daughter died most likely of starvation and their bodies rotted alone in a house for weeks and weeks.
That's why his 'joke' is more offensive than usual...to me anyways.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,706 ✭✭✭fonecrusher1

    A bit fcukin dumb alright.

Thats the way of AH isn't it? Someone posts a tragic story & everyone speeds in to post the cruelest so-called pun/piss-take.

I'l poke fun at anything but oh cripes thats a bad oul story. A bit too sad, even for me.

There is a forum specifally for jokes like that! It's not something I would take offence to but it crossed the line by a wide mark.

To be honest "After hours" is the last place I would post that story.
If you throw a dog a bone, don't be surprised if you get nipped.
I'd even go so far as to say that many of these sad stories are posted up as offerings to the humour gods of afterhours, with the original posters then sitting back to bask in the quips.

I'm sick of this old line being trotted out as if to try to justify the behaviour. Just because its After Hours does that mean people lose any modicum of decency they have? If someone handed him a newspaper and said... read that article, you can bet that poster would not have responded "she should have eaten her legs". Its the pseudo-anonymity that boards.ie gives that allows people to be cunts

If you wouldn't write it on facebook where people can see your real name, then you shouldn't write it on boards.

I'd say the daughter died of dehydration. Starvation takes months, dehydration can be 3 days to 1 week. Terrible, God bless them.

Also on a particular site I'm on I was expecting a lot of jokes about this and yet there were none that I've noticed, and they've joked about a lot worse.

I think he made the mistake of jumping in without actually reading the link through, there was just one minute between the post and his reply.

Typical AH response in most cases tbh, which is unfortunate.

With threads like this the first reply can set the tone for the whole thread.

Thankfully everyone else replied in a manner that gives AH and it's posters full credit where credit is due.

You are all capable of understanding tragedy and posting in a manner that shows threads like this belong in After Hours,
I'd say the daughter died of dehydration. Starvation takes months, dehydration can be 3 days to 1 week. Terrible, God bless them.

No it's not the way of AH and I think this thread is testament to that...one person made a joke in poor taste and everyone else called him up on it. That's hardly 'everyone speeding in'. I don't know why posters in AH are grouped together as heartless idiots, yes many of us have a darker sense of humour, but 99% know when the line's being crossed.

yes i read the link now, but its still not that much worse than other death stories with people mocking them, also the fact that there's a possibility that the carer could have murdered her first.

    You mean her Mother.

    Are you referring to this?
Police are also investigating the possibility she may have killed her daughter before taking her own life. The bodies were discovered at an address in Wheathampstead.

It's circumstantial atm, but you seem to be the only one to have selected that from the article mink_man.

If I were you I would stop posting in this thread as all you are doing atm is pissing people off.

Oh come on, that's an over reaction. It was a tasteless joke, but I've seen worse posted without a similar reaction in AH, and I'm sure most posters have either told, or laughed at, equally crude jokes from time to time.

    Why why why?

Why didnt you just not make the most disgusting 'joke' about a disabled person starving to death. She sat there dying and was incapable of doing anything about it. How is that funny?

would someone who had a few pints in them go telling a serious story, no they wouldn't and I'm sure some would make a joke about it, at least in their head anyways...as far as i can see there's a bandwagon going by and everyone is jumping on it..

I did, and was somewhat surprised to be honest. I can understand people not finding it funny (I didn't, but because it wasn't actually funny, rather than it's subject matter), but the vitriol he's had heaped on him is too much. One poster deems him sociopathic for God's sake! I tend to agree with the one poster who stated that, while he didn't find it funny, he'd defend his right to make such a post.

Crude, tasteless humour have always been, and always will be part of human nature. Are people here really saying they haven't laughed at racist jokes, at Stevie Wonder/Helen Keller gags, at jokes about famine, war, death, violence?! If so, then both myself and the OP must keep some very odd company indeed.

As always in After Hours the posters will decide what way they want a thread to go.

They did that here and fair play to them.

I quoted their responses and tried to steer the thread in the direction they wanted.

I stand by that, after all After Hours wouldn't exist without the majority of posters having their say.
