    http://movies.about.com/b/2010/07/28/rihanna-joins-battleship.htm
Rihanna's ready to become the latest pop star to try her hand at acting. The Grammy Award-winning singer has been cast in Universal Pictures' Battleship, an sci-fi action drama based on the popular Hasbro board game.

Taylor Kitsch (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood) star in Battleship, a project that sounds like it'll just barely be based on the game that inspired it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe Hasbro's Battleship had anything to do with the Navy fighing off an invasion by aliens which is what the film's all about.

Peter Berg (Hancock) is directing from a screenplay by Jon and Erich Hoeber. Filming's expected to begin soon with Universal eyeing a May 25, 2012 release.

I don't remember aliens in the board game. It's odd, this is kind of an original idea and they're going out of their way to associate with something else.

Why bother buy the rights to the boardgame for something like this?

Surely a film set on a battleship isn't something that need pay royalties to Milton Bradley.

You know what....with peter berg, it might be good!...i've not seen a movie that has ships doing battle at sea, can anyone remember a modern film of the genre?

You'll see WWII movies, but nothing in recent memory...it's not been done as far as i can tell, Berg says in an interview that the premse wil be Distrcit 9 like, the aliens use ships that glide over the water and such, and a naval battle ensues.

If it's done right, it could be good!

    $200 million dollar budget!!!!!!!!

    http://www.worstpreviews.com/headline.php?id=18653

Written by the brother writing team Jon and Erich Hoeber (Whiteout), the story unfolds as “a massive Naval adventure across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force.” The superior force are aliens from another planet known as The Regents. They come from a world similar to ours, and aren’t actually looking to take over humanity or the planet Earth. Instead, they’re on a mission to build a power source in the ocean, which is where they come in contact with a navy fleet. The film will also show us both sides of the story—from the aliens’ perspective, as well as the humans. The alien ships do fly to Earth, as well as through the atmosphere, but they lose that capability once they land. They’re also not busting out any lasers or fantastical alien weaponry—their weapons will be ballistics-based just like ours.

I'd forgotten about this, looks like they've gone with making it an alien invasion movie eh? Well it could be a lot of fun who knows, looks fairly generic from the trailer though. I guess calling it Battleship is just an excuse to throw recogniseable bankable name on it.

Not entirely unlike the poster for Titanic methinks.

    battleship-poster_430x637.jpg

    titanicB.jpg

That plot summary sounds like what most people really wanted back 1997, 'Titanic' meets 'Starship Troopers'. Giant bugs sink ships! Yay!

    Anyway here's the trailer:

The film simply won't work unless someone screams at the top of their voice while shaking their fist: "YOU SUNK MY BATTLESHIP!!!" :p

ITS NOT OUT FOR A YEAR HOLLYWOOD, WE DON'T NEED TRAILERS! GARRHH!

Looks like absolute drivel. They could have funded hundreds of decent movies with the money they're pouring into this nonsense :pac:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

Just think with that money they could have remade the Sergei M. Eisenstein film of the same name!

Berg’s films seem to be getting progressively worse. As are his influences. The Kingdom was clearly trying to be Michael Mann, where as this looks more like Michael Bay.

Skyline, Battle Los Angeles, now Battleship...anyone else seeing a sort of pattern emerge?

and to think this is the same guy who made the fantastic Friday Night Lights

I had it in my head that rihanna was gonna be in this movie

given how low that had brought my expectations, this trailer ain't half bad

Looks like someone couldn't get the license to Transformers so tacked the story onto whatever they could.

Yes. 'Monopoly the movie' is sure to have robots in it. Cos robots have a monoploy on special effects...or something

Rumours anyway. Bear in mind same said rumours had Ridley Scott attached.

Yea, I thought Ridley Scott or someone was supposed to direct it...

I'll be honest - I'd watch Monopoly the movie if the main character was a giant CGI thimble engaged in a property war with an anamorphic car.

I don't know; it didn't save Superman Returns.

That's a serious comedown. The last fifteen seconds of that trailer were the best, looking at the CIWS Phalanx blazing out rounds was poetical.

On the topic of Friday Night Lights, that movie is terribly underrated and undiscovered by many IMO.

Why wouldn't the spaceship thingys just fly off and destroy cities and stuff, instead of hanging around fighting battleships?

Apparently they want Earth's water source. It's their objective. Removing combined fleets would mean uninterrupted access. But then you've to contend with Air Forces and land units. Apparently this film is taking place on all three fronts, which already sounds like it's going to be overstretched.

The more I watch this trailer the more I want it to be an intelligent piss take of Micheal Bay movies more than someone wanting to be him.

I don't think that will be the case, but I choose to hope.

    i fancy a game of battleship now:D,

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,489 ✭✭✭iMax

As much as I hate to say it, this is gonna be a huge summer hit. I'm just surprised Michael bay isn't doing it.

    Best line in the movie:
    Prepare to fire.
    Sir, which weapons?
    All of them.

    Predictions:

Liam Neeson WILL say "they've sunk my (or a) battleship"

The spaceship will be cloaked & they'll have to fire on it in grid format.

    Mixed feelings about this.

When I read the description I thought it could be fantastic. A war film set on modern day battleships with big set pieces done right could be epic. Aliens, meh, but they're described as having comparable technology, so it could still be great.

But then in the clip the alien 'battleship' jumps. It suddenly starts looking way too Bay-ish.

Hopefully they just picked some ridiculous looking bit for the ads and the rest of it is better.

There are no modern-day battleships. The class is as obsolete as the galleon.

This film will likely have little to do, correctness-wise with history or modern day military as there's no Battleships in action any more. I expect this will be balls-to-the-walls action. Not that that's a bad thing sometimes mind you.

But I would have preferred large scale air-to-air, ship-to-ship and sub-to-sub battles than aliens.

Saw the traler today... was not expecting aliens to show up!

New trailer for this out, shows a bit more of the aliens.

Not sure what Neeson is doing in this, most likely for the dollas. Could be fun though who knows.

The alien armour looks exactly like Master Chief from Halo

This second trailer has left me cold. I thought the first one was better. The first trailer also showed more of the link between this and the board game.

TBH I really think the only link is that it involves the Navy. The boardgame is just a means of sticking a recognisable brand on an alien invasion movie so they can sell it.

They're stuck in the forcefield, it's obviously going to be a case of "playing the game - D3 - you've sunk my battleship"

I really shouldn't be, but I'm really looking forward to seeing this :)

jaysus bay got "transformers 4" out quickly !

    :)

TBH reminds me more of "robotix" than battleship, but ya know what ?

    i reckon this'll be a great laugh.

nothing wrong in with a dumb action flick in the summer ala skyline and this doesnt seem to take itself too seriously.

the attack on the city in the trailer would seem to be the spur to get the fleet to engage proper so i reckon there not really spoiling much showing us that as its more abou moving the plot along than actually anything of real consequence to the main characters.

ive a soft spot for stuff like this so ill be checking it out. theres been a bit of a glut lately but there was a time when ya'd never get a decent alien invasion film. i think the last before transformers broke the scene was independence day or mars attacks so i dont mind the genre plodding along for a bit longer.

    :)

Its directed by the guy who made Friday Night Lights, The Rundown(Welcome to the Jungle) and Hancock(flawed but I enjoyed it) which already shows he knows a bit more about character and story than Bay, I think this could be great fun

I can't wait for "Chess: the Movie". Jake Gyllenhaal stars as an ordinary soldier, who, as he advances through the ranks of the military, becomes more convinced that he needs a sex change. He faces stiff opposition from the clergy, who travel around in a giant castle on wheels.

Love this line from the trailer
"From Hasbro, the company that brought you Transformers"

Like it has any relevance! :-)

Looks absolutely terrible. Going to be a gigantic tongue-in-cheek massacre the likes of which hasn't been seen since Roger Moore's James Bond
