Pity that, it would have been a good duel between us. Give me a shout if you spot me, navy blue London Heathside singlet.

I went looking for you around the hall but couldn't spot you in the crowd. Great going today and well done. You should do more races in Waterford, tis a fast place:D

60:38 for the Dungarvan 10 today, pb by 30 secs, delighted with that. Elated one might say.

Great run today! Just wanted to say thanks as well for find the wettest possible route back to the sports hall, I've half a Sunday newspaper stuffed into my runner to try and dry them out :)

    Dungarvan 10 Mile Race Report

Following on from my 61’08 Cabbage Patch 10 mile and my 1’22 Waterford Half, this race was the next step on the way to London in April and i set sub 60 as the goal back in November when i registered for this. However i’d only one speed session done in 5 weeks beforehand so i was thinking sub 61 and a pb would be a more realistic goal.

The whole weekend almost didn’t got off the ground (literally). Horrific traffic on the Finchley Road and the M25 on the bus on the way to Stansted had me in the awful position of being 25 mls from the airport 25 mins before the gate closed. I had all but given up when i got to the airport at 19:41 for a 20:10 flight, with security to go through etc. A new mile pb was set racing through the airport and down to the gate, where boarding hadn’t even begun, nice :). Without this 20 minute delay the whole weekend was toast no doubt. Truth be told i was trying to think of an excuse not to do this race and this one would have been ideal. I just didn’t feel race ready.

Drove down from Limerick with the parents after the first set of the tennis, got the number, and jogged the mile or so down to the start. A few strides and i was ready to go. I spotted a few familiar heads from the Waterford half and i decided to use them as indicators. The gun went i and tried to settle into 6’06 ish pace but my markers were well up the road from me so i upped the pace a bit. The garmin lost signal while waiting at the start and i only spotted this 5 secs before the gun which didn’t help my pacing and skewed the distances. I passed the 1 mile mark in 5’41  “BRIAN, WHAT ARE YOU PLAYING AT” echoed through my head. Mile 2 was about 5’55 but i felt ok tbh so i went with it. There was a small hill next which checked my momentum a little and i was back into normal pace (6’05-6’10 pace) 3 mls passed in 17’42, Christ i’m not hanging about i thought.

Miles 4 and 5 were a different ballgame altogether, we were running into a mild headwind which was draining despite the cover i had and the group i was in started to pull away from me just after mile 4 (reached in 23’48). I almost slipped twice on a 100m long oil slick on the road here and my race slowly unravelled as i hit 5 mls in 30’08 (an unofficial pb) I was done in here, with my chance blown from the exuberant start i thought. I harboured definite thoughts of dropping out all through that 5th mile tbh.

Things changed drastically just after the 5 mile mark as we swung left and out of the wind and i got into a nice group again and i was "back on the bridle" for the next 2 mls. I hit mile 6 in 36’11, and 6.21mls on the watch at bang on 37’29 (another unofficial pb) Mile 7 was nice and flat by a creek and i got into a sustainable rhythm of about 6’00-6’05 pace as I hit 7 mls in 42’09. Mile 8 wasn’t easy, a couple of rises, the second taking us onto the N25 and it was an ok run to the finish from here. From here i basically just maintained pace to the finish and didn’t respond to anyone around me. I was hurting here and was just counting down the metres to the finish.

Swinging into the finishing straight i found energy to outsprint a guy head of me and to stop the watch in 60’36 :p, with an official time of 60’38, which i will go with as i always do. This was a pb of 30 seconds, which may not sound like much but the 61’08 was one of those days when everything clicks and i was delighted to lower that time yesterday. Met Opus, Aero2k, Chinguetti and Kentucky Pete afterwards and did a mile warm down through the swamp :D along the seafront with Opus. A great way to start the year with a nice pb.

Looking forward this gives me a real chance of sub 80 in the Silverstone Half on March 11th and a shot of sub 3 in London i guess. The 2nd half of that statement may sound ludicrous (Mcmillan gives me sub 2’50 now) but that’s the puzzle i’ve been trying to solve for a while now. I need to start protecting my IT band as the mileage inevitably increases over the coming weeks too, it wasn’t an issue during the race but it’s a bit stiff now.

Weekly Review, 35 mls and 6 runs. The IT band thing was a definite scare but Sundays race makes it a successful week in the end.

    Yearly Mileage, 164 mls.

Remember this statement when you are running London. Running PBs is not easy, it's supposed to hurt and take you out of your comfort zone. There will always be a little voice telling you to stop to some stage of every PB race, the secret is to grind it out and inevitably you will start to feel good again. Seems that's what happened for you yesterday :) Nice one

Super running, well done and the 5m and 10k marks along the way too! You have come a long way in a year, kudos :)

You'll need to sort out that 5 mile pb of yours once your finished with london.

I know yeah, my 30'18 is due the Larry Murphy treatment sooner rather than later :p

Problem is all the best 5 milers seem to clash with something else, on both sides of the water. Haven't raced one since 2010.

Nope the BHAA have a midweek 5 miler there every year. I see from their calendar it is Tuesday 29th may this year.

It's a really fast course by all accounts.

I might put that on the cards, it's 3 miles from my house so I could warm up enroute! :)

Well done again Brian. Savage running!!

Mon 30th Jan, 3.5 mls recovery jog around the locality in 32'30 (9'17) Legs felt like concrete in work all day with a fair bit of DOMS present from the race yesterday but that was expected. The run wasnt too bad and no pain from the IT band which is good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,659 ✭✭✭tisnotover

great running lad, well done, going to be a very good year for you!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,049 ✭✭✭Brianderunner

Tues 31st Jan, 7 mls easy tonight in 59'02 (8'26) down to Regents and a lap of the circle. Legs felt much better but held back just to be sure. 10 mls in racers usually leaves me fairly dead for a week or so.

January Review, 175 mls and 27/31 runs. Forced to take a couple of rest days early in the month due to feeling run down and had an IT band scare just last week but the month ended brilliantly with the pb in Dungarvan 2 days ago. Roll on the spring!

Weds 1st Feb, 7 mls tonight with the club. Session was 10 mls tempo/steady and several groups formed. I slotted into a 7'30-7'40 pace group doing 2 laps of the heath's outside roads (hilly beyond belief) I did the first lap with them then did another 2 myself. 7 mls in 54'47 (7'49) in the end and it felt pretty good. Almost recovered from Sunday but the track session after work in the heath will tell me more.

Thurs 2nd Feb, tough session on the cards tonight. 2-3 mls w/u followed by 20 x 400m at 10k pace (5'50 or so) with 45 secs jog recovery, followed by 2-3 mls w/d. 2.1 mls or so down to the gravel track between Primrose and Regents beside the zoo and knocked out the reps (after a slow first one to ease myself in) in about 86-88 secs, perfect pace really.

This got tough around reps 7-8 and a bit of HTFU was needed to keep going. Once i got to 12 it was plain sailing and i was finishing the reps quite strongly.

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/146676765

2.5 mls or so w/d into the Baltic breeze (-2 tonight) for 10.5 mls total. Happy with that and i seem to have recovered from Sunday. No chance of a run tomorrow unfortunately, unless i go at 7am before work (hahaha)

Fri 3rd Feb, no window to run at all. Work was busy and there was a retirement party after work i had to go to.

Sat 4th Feb, 6 mls easy in 49'08 (8'11) in the heath. Fairly hilly run but felt fine.

Saturday evening saw 2-3 inches of snow fall in London and it kept going overnight. It's a long time since i've been happy to see snow falling and accumulating on the ground.

Sun 5th Feb, plan was for a 20 mile LSR but as expected the footpaths were icy and threachorous and this was doomed from the outset. I got about 3 mls in before calling a halt to proceedings. I came close to slipping on the paths in the heath and the grass was frozen and bumpy and was annoying the IT band. I tried the footpaths then and they were even worse. 3 mls in 25'30 (8'30) and most definitely a run to forget. The footpaths are still lethal and i'll be using the treadmill this evening i'd say. Just hoping it doesnt snow again.

Weekly Review, 37 mls and 6 runs. Thursdays session was good but the weekend was disappointing. I'll put it down as a recovery week from Dungarvan i think.

    Yearly Mileage, 201 mls.
