Happiness plays a big role in the game now. I wonder if they took a cue from Civ on that mechanic.

I was thinking if that was standard or if I'd played too much civ lately that I was calculating the risk vs reward of each building according to modernisation vs happiness

My new re-roll was super effective, not only did the side that earlier I had problems with stupidly rushed me at the beginning of the campaign so I took their territory without issue but the big friendly neighbour from earlier instead of me accidently picking a fight with him I got to sign a military alliance with him instead.

Though I may be overzealous with the instigate riot ability I kept using it to delay a much bigger army from attacking me and by the time I got around to counter attacking they had a bandit army bigger then their regular army that became my problem once I conquered the Provence.

did ye go for the limited ed on steam or the standard?

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,685 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

    standard.

I've bought limited editions of the last 4 total war games on steam and retail (for empire/medieval 2) and honestly I've never used the extra unit they give and really the only thing I used was the physical item they gave with empire (it was a map/tech tree sheet if I remember...or was that medieval 2? Wait! Medieval 2 was the model knight I think.)

Honestly the only limited edition I regret not getting was the shogun 2 chess set.

Got the special edition by accident. I usually deplore that kind of stuff.

AI seems a bit better. I was waiting for enemy units to stop, point at the sky, maybe pull out an easel and start painting the pretty shells falling from the sky after I fired a naval artillery strike. Instead they took evasive action and I hit nothing. I think the focused arty strike setting is good for immobile units like cannons and the like, else area fire is better although more random. Boy when it hits though, it really hits! A focused arty strike absolutely wiped out a cannon that was causing me some problems.

Haven't seen any naval invasions yet but the AI does loads in Shogun 2, so I expect that will happen too.

Diplomacy seems tweaked too. AI engages more, suggests alternate treaties, that kind of thing.

Very good all in all and I haven't even seen most of the new stuff. I suspect I'll be playing this all weekend.

Its surpisingly dependent. In sieges focused artillery is the way to go cause you can goad the enemy into staying in position by running an expendable unit up near where they are dug in and the infantry on the wall will stay to pick off a few men and get walloped by the artie.

Calvary never stays though, they get the f*ck out of dodge the second they see smoke.

I've only used area fire once when I thought it be better for an approaching army and it shook them etc but didnt do a lot of damage, but I swapped to focus when our infantry got in range of each other and started pegging each other. Again cavalry ran as did the spearmen but the infantry stayed firing on my guys. Got a satisfying display of Mortis Arial It also opened them up to be mowed down by my sabre cavalry when the spearmen were caught out of position.

I seem to have sorted my issue, followed the above step, haven't had any crashes since.land battles are tougher!off map arty is very cool.

It's poorly optimised performance wise too, I had to knock it down to 720p and medium settings to get a smooth frame rate and it looks like garbage (my computer runs skyrim in 1080p perfectly)

Do you get a boost for having more naval artillery during land battles? Or is it a flat amount?

  • Legal Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 5,400 Mod ✭✭✭✭Maximilian

Not too sure about this but more shells seem to land when you have a full fleeet in support. Also, there are promotions for the foreign veteran and generals (I think) that reduce the spread and add extra volleys. haven't figured out yet whether he needs to be in the fleet or the army being supported.

I had 4 volleys available defending a cast assault last night, outnumbered 3 to 1. Was sure I would lose but killed 2k enemy, mainly with arty fire I reckon. It was awesome!

and does anyone notice how some units speak with western accents, even if they have only Japanese troops in them – kind of annoying :/

  • Legal Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 5,400 Mod ✭✭✭✭Maximilian

If you have that big Ironclad you're supposed to have western voices, since it's a western ship but I noticed it with other units too sometimes. It'll be patched out no doubt along with one or two other bugs I've come across - the kneeling fire ability gets bugged out a lot.

Yes the size of your fleet affects the off map artillary when you run your mouse over the call in button it states how many shells will land and for how long, how quick it will take the fleet to fire etc.

Having more ships increases the number of shells that land and choosing area over focus will have your shells landing sooner (7 seconds instead of 11) I assume other factors such as tech tree experience etc will increase other bits.

I notice you cant just build an admiral flagship anymore or promote a ship to admiral like Empire.

The biggest issue I have right now is I think the naval battles are bugged. Every battle I start by attacking the enemy fleet stays motionless facing broadside towards my spawn. Which makes sense I guess. But they never move from there until they get fired on. Every freaking time I just skim around the side of the map until I am now broadside to their sterns and then get to put 3-4 full rounds into them before they have turned enough to return fire. Has allowed me to sink superior forces with ease a few times.

I haven't seen the number of shells exceeding 48 though. If you have a second fleet in range it doesn't seem to increase it further.

To get the gatling gun do you need to get the arty building?

  • Legal Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 5,400 Mod ✭✭✭✭Maximilian

You need to research the tech. It's the highest arty building upgrade I think. It's continuous fire as far as I can see. Actually makes the first person mode fun. They're a great way of protecting your cannons from direct assault, so I stick one on either side of my cannons.

Also, experienced Royal Marines are bloody devastating. They're probably called something different if you go with the French or Americans.

If your talking about fall of the samurai then in my personal opinion yes.
Shogun was good anyway, and this kicked it up a notch.

My favourite things about it are !
    1. No realm divide, i detested that it basically dumped diplomacy out the door and made it a long slog .
    2. Diplomacy has defo got an update i find people are more willing to make alliances early and trade agreements etc .
    3. The research lines are good and make sense.
    4. I like the skills trees for characters.
    5. Naval bombardment and artillery is excellent.
6.Loving castle attacks and defenses, the artillery is a game changer for both sides.
