Did thay remove the turbo to confirm this? A replacement turbo wouldn't be too expensive, the engine being an AUM points at it being k03s turbo, slightly harder to come by.

To be honest, Im not sure if the removed the turbo to check it, Id assume they did, but i guess I shouldnt assume anything! Ill call them tomorrow and check, and I know its an AUM engine but I dunno about K03s bit... There is an aum-ko3s on e bay, its in England and hes looking for 1025euro pluas about 100euro shipping, thats without the tubo, so Im thinking hes a bit on the expensive side?

Yep, a compression test it easy to do, can be done after the engine is installed in your car. You could mention to the engine seller that you would require a refund and labour costs covered if the engine is muck. Any one selling an engine for €700 / €800 should really be confident that it's fine and should have no bother with a request like that.

Thats a great tip, thanks... By the way, soneone offered me €1000 for the shell, would it be worth that or more|? I pretty much told him no thanks...?

    op,

i can understand your confusion about what to do with the engine,
i was the same with a different type of engine, "what to do, what to do"
in the end i took my car to an engine specialist, not a mechanic but a place that rebuilt engines.

Hoping to get mine back this weekend, based only on talking with them so far they seem to know what they are doing. Friday will tell a lot!

So, i suppose im saying, try to find an engine rebuild place and get their advice,
i went to a place in cork, dont know if that is too far for you.

It's highly unlikely that they removed the turbo tbh. If it's an AUM engine then it'll have a K03s turbo fitted. No matter which decision you take there are going to be risks involved. €1000 for your shell seems low ball alright, what kind if interior have you got? Leather?

Its normal material seating, and the surrounds on the doors and around dash/stereo is wooden effect?? Theres the original VW alloys on it with four very new tyres aswell. Now the paintwork has a few small scratches but thats all..??

If I were you, I'd take the €1000 for the shell. Add a couple of grand and you have the cashpower to buy yourself a nice car :)

    The other options are risky...

Keep us posted here, whatever you do!

Yeah, Im hearing you, but the thing is at most, Id only have €1500 to out with it and my being used to some power in the car might not be able to get something Id want, you know? One poster said I could get away with getting the shaft machined and get out for €700. Now if that was possible and could get me back on the road, Id jump at it....

One way or another, i will keep you informed of all developments!! :)

Its a 5 door, metallic navy. It has NCT on it ( ill need to check how much) but no tax. Its in decent enough shape, has light scratch on bonnet, but also has four new tyres which I just out on before the engine died. It also has the original VW alloys it came with on.

Im waiting on a call in the morning for a price for some work on it, so I will get back to you r your offer once I get that...

    Thank you :)

Take the money for the shell and add a few quid to buy something decent.
Like a focus! Mk4 golfs are money pits.

Miss Daisy, there are lots of helpful people on here. it is great to see it.

i am PM ing the phone number of a VW addict nephew of mine. give him a ring.

This could be a nightmare if handled wrongly.

By the way did either of the breakers with engines match the code?
