What are peoples opinions on Union Involvement in Pride Week?

I think it's a great idea! I have heard some people saying that they weren't happy about it, but whatever way you look at it, the LGBT are a society and every society is entitled to have events- for example the Samba society are also organising a load of stuff this week too. I think the Union should get more involved in any events that are held by societies in order to break down the barrier that seems to exist between the Union and students.

oh yeah I agree, I ask only because I had a few people coming up to me complaining about the lack of Union Involvement in Pride Week. Its kinda a debatable issue, because while its about LGBT Welfare, its also a society event, so it might like favouritism from the Union.

I've been told that it would be possible to mandate the campaigns committee to help out, so I'm just seeing what people would think of a motion:p

That'd be an absolutely fantastic idea! I wish I had more of a chance to give a hand with the organising, because there are some great events going on but not enough people know about them

The Clubs and Socs are the first point of contact that a lot of Students have with the University from a social point of view. Even if it was done as an 'ear to the ground' effort, it would be a worthwhile exercise. In an effort to ovoid the favouritism argument, get involved in all of the clubs and socs who are interested. Problem solved. People meet the Union, as they should, on ground on which they are comfortible and the Union learns, rather than assumes, what is required.

    :pac:... that's it so far

Next UC is the 14th I believe.

Someone asked why The Print is printed in Manchester and not Ireland. I'm on leave this week for personal reasons but I know some of the people who were curious post here, so I'll back up and add to the answers given there:

    1. It's the only place that prints the product I wanted: a full-colour Berliner size newspaper.

    2. We went with them because I thought a paper was better for NUIM than a magazine. Irish presses can only do part-colour, specifically the outside pages, in colour.

    3. We would have had to assemble it ourselves if printed in Ireland. There simply isn't time in the day to do this. The three sabbats basically work a 60+ hour week already. It's true. My own "print" weekend is usually a 60 hour slog.

    4. A 24 turnaround time. So it stays current as possible.

I'll post more later, friends have arrived!

And the t-shirts were out-sourced aswell...

Will the union exec be supporting any Irish jobs this year or just organising a stroll up a street in Dublin with Gary Redmond?

Are you being naive or just trolling?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

I think we both know the answer to that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 209 ✭✭BarryDoodles

    Neither.

I've been vocal about my opinions on U.S.I on the relevant thread and on facebook. So I took a cheap shot at Rob.

I thought I would point out that the out sourcing of the paper was part of a trend. Which I feel is a valid point.

If I was trolling, I would point out that the stroll didn't do much good. Washington D.C may be a better place to go for a walk. http://www.imf.org/external/np/exr/map/index.htm

As for the issue at council, its is clearly both a political and religious issue from which a humanitarian issue arose.

I feel, if my citizens were decended from concentration camp refugees and their children's school buses were the favourite target of suicide bombers then I feel I would be justifably paranoid.

But these are merely my opinions.

Most economists would disagree with you on the paper issue Barry...

    Barry Doodles is right wing...

Regardless, left wing politics and free trade go hand in hand usually.

I was making the point that you can't trust economists. They're not impartial as some would have you believe.

The numbers in my exams last year would suggest I have a clue. In fact they'd suggest I know exactly what's going on in my course. But numbers do lie sometimes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 912 ✭✭✭Norrdeth

@LeixlipRed, did you really have to bring BarryDoodles' political affiliations into the debate about paper with reference with a current event?

I think not, saying who's leftrightupordown does not fix arguments, only expands them. Most people can't see past this.
Please continue with the concerns of outsourcing.

    Neither.

You're not naive and you were definitely trolling. Stop it.

Back on the topic everyone. Debate the posts not the poster.

Read the posts again, I commented on what Irish Goat said about economists. He mentioned it about Barry. Or did you just read what you wanted to?

    Adoption of Agenda
    Adoption of previous Minutes
    Guardianship members – They are:

    Philip O Callaghan, Chairperson
    Ian Russell, Secretary
    Susan Caldwell
    Ronan Barry
    Ciaran O Carroll
    John McKenna
    Paul Mullally

    Correspondence – None.

Aengus Ó Maoláin (AOM) welcomes Ruaidhri Boland, First Year Rep. and Robert Dixon, Post Graduate Rep to Union Council.

    Clubs and Societies Names

Micháel Hughes: I would suggest we change names of clubs and socs from NUIM to Maynooth, Would be better as includes St.Pat's Students. I would like support from UC to go ahead and encourage this.

Andrew 2nd Bmus: Is it a good idea, when people already have hoodies and logos, how to incentivise this?

MH: I just want to put groundwork down for next couple of years. Want to see it progress.

AOM: A lot of clubs and societies just happen to be getting new websites anyway. Perfect time for them to change. MUCK is an example of a successful name. Most of the smaller clubs and nearly all socs should be able to do it

    Niteline
Liz Murray (LM): On another topic:the agenda for next UC, Niteline was brought up last year as there was no feedback on costs, volume etc., information was provided during the summer, but not as much as we requested. I still support the motion that we disaffiliate from Niteline, I'll be sending something with the agenda.

    Clubs and Societies Names cont.

    MH calls a motion:

Motion: Union Council will encourage the changing of Club and Society names to a variant of Maynooth/Maynooth University... across the course of the year.

    -Seconded by AOM

    21 In Favour
    0 Against
    1 Abstention

    Motion is passed.

Andrew 2nd BMus, The print is printed in Manchester, instead of an Irish press, perhaps under current circumstances, we might support Irish industry.

AOM: Fair point, Rob Munnelly is not here, its a formatting issue, the actual size of the print is only done in that press, next closest one is Czech Republic.

LM: The prices and quotes from printers in Ireland for that size would be thousands of euros more, per issue.
AOM: And would be printed half in colour and half in black and white.
LM: And we would have to assemble it ourselves.

    PARKING

    AOM:
A lot of people complaining about the email from director of corporate services, next issue of the Print will have something on it. Union last year put in submission about measures.
Number of issue: 2000 people trying to park in 1000 spaces. People who aren't students parking in college. People driving from Parsons Street, Meadowbrook etc.
Basically doing nothing is not an option, email gave the impression that people will be paying lots.

The Canteen and Callan building car park, will be pay and display. 150 in SU carpark for those with permits, Auxillia carpark will be staff permits, ones around college will be permit for staff and students. Ones on ring road will be for those carpooling.

Main thing is that its not as bad as people think it is. Article in the print will explain more clearly. Tell people what's happening to stop people overreacting.

    Grace Crehan (GC):
Will the money from permits be put into road maintenance?

AOM: will say to director of Corporate Services.

    Dave Assistant RO:
Will there be the same number of permits as parking spaces?

AOM: not at the minute, system is based on NUIG, basically having a permit system will bring down numbers anyway.

LM: Don't underestimate the amount of people who arent students, dont think there will be as much of an issue as people think there will be. Specific spaces will help.

Kelly Fagan(KF): How can we cycle when there are no cycle lanes, cars parking in them etc, will this be fixed?
AOM: Yes, there will be a network of cycle routes internally, eg. from residences to union.
A large % of profit will be reserved by new terminals for bikes. At union, new apartments etc
Cyclepaths on the ringroad are not cyclepaths anymore, they will be changed and new ones put in.

Andrew Bmus: Will the permits be for the car or student?
    AOM: to the student.

    Lisa: What about placement students?
AOM: One can buy a permit for a semester

GC: Will the permits be for 24/7?
    AOM: 9-6
AOM send questions to president@nuimsu.com and I'll answer next time, I'll invite Mr.Fitzmorris, Director of Corporate Services to next Union Council

    Theology Ball
MH: Theology ball may be postponed.

    AOB
ARO: next UC is 14th, email by 5pm on the 10th. Will use polls for next semester, one to decide when.
GC: Everybody add Union Council on Facebook.

    AOB
Gene Carney: Will there be working group reports?
    LM: yes, there will be.

    END
