  • I see some are saying on various forums and blogs that removing the battery on the board for 60 seconds fixes the problem.

5-10 mins is what I've been seeing. only thing is though you could screw up your warranty if you go tampering with it. (i think?)

Don't know and I'm not going to try either.

If removing the battery does the job then surely it can't be that hard and take too long to release a patch that resets the console.

Have to say I'm gonna be fairly pissed off if it doesn't fix itself at midnight!!:pac:

Yeah awfully! I reckon if it isn't working we get a boycott going on God Of War III even if it is working by then!

Just wait an see, at 00:00 GMT the amount of "phat" PS3s logging on to PSN will crash all the servers due to the massive influx of traffic. It could be massive or a non event.

Have to admit that a BIOS update sounds like an easy solution.

Does anyone else wonder how this happened in that surely the Slim's internal coding and architecture must be almost copied from the original, but someone saw fit to change the clock settings, but didn't bother pointing out the problem with the old one?

Damn this is perfect for Sony.

They can now slip in a little patch also to Geohot's hacking, People will have to update to play games :mad:

Edit: Think i'll just try that battery thing, Seeing as I had to change a bluray laser already :P

I was thinking that as well. The servers will be fixed then millions of people will log on at exactly the same time and it will be gone :D.

The Japanese company recommends that owners of the old model does not use the console till the company is repairing the breakdown. The Japanese electronics maker Sony on Monday urged owners of older models of its PlayStation 3 no longer to use the console as the company needs time to repair a fault found on Sunday in several countries. “We hope to resolve this problem in the coming 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model that is not the new slim PS3 [released in 2009], we advise you not to use your PS3, “says director of communications for Sony, Patrick Seybold in a message posted on the blog for U.S. users of the PS3.
    Loss of trophies
What happens to players who would brave this bold warning? They expose themselves to “errors in certain features, such as registration of trophies obtained, and that it is impossible to recover some data.. A similar message was found on the blog for European users of the PS3.
According to Sony, the failure was due to a defect of the internal clock of the console. Among the problems, according to Sony, the date of the console can be solved alone on 1 January 2000, players cannot connect online or start some games, while the “trophies” won erased earlier.
This development is likely to reassure players increasingly worried.

Sounds suspiciously like the Y2K bug to me:
    http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/03/latest-info-on-playstation-network-status/

As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

    Errors include:

    * The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
    * When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following
message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been
signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
    * When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears
on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install
    trophies. Please exit your game.”
    * When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the
Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date
and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
    * Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the
PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above, please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.

Ha I'm an idiot. For some reason when I opened this thread I could only see page one and and I didn't see any further pages so I clicked on the twitter link on the end of page 1 and saw an update on it and thought I was posting some news only to suddenly discover the other 20 odd pages.

    Sorry!:o

I'd say Sony have foreseen this happening (hence the fact the problem is rectified in the "slims") but I'd imagine they didn't bother with a making a solution as it's most likely a problem that will only last for these exact 24hrs. The expense of fixing the problem against people with older systems being offline for a day seen the less expensive option win out. We'll be online in 90 mins or so. And if not....then this last paragraph should be disregarded as bollocks! :D

I do agree that they probably knew about it with it being fixed later on, but should they have said something and let people avoid putting the playstations on or do what they did and just worry about it when it happens and avoid giving out any info at all?

Do we know for certain that everything will be back to normal at midnight or are we speculating?

Pretty much speculating but so are Sony as they are basically hoping it fixes itself as well.
