not too bad. some very well deserved games there.

Very well done to Mr. E and whoever else contributed their efforts to this.

They are all kind of depressingly predictable :/ No sign of Demon's Souls or Persona 4 either, demon's souls particularly since it's far and away my game of the year and hugely innovative. I've only gotone or two problems with the winners, I'm just disappointed by the lack of surprises.

    Now for my gripes:

    - Game design of the year going to Uncharted 2? All it is is a pretty third person shooter with a cover system, hardly pushing the envelope.

    - Best Boss battle of the year first and second place goes to two interactive cutscenes and not boss battles.

I'm also not sure about chrono trigger getting in there since it's a rerelease.

Now on to the best of the decade and dear oh dear it's abysmal. It's to be expected from a popular vote contest but there were far too many undeserving winners and far too many new games beating out far more deserving older ones.

    - boss battle going to another cutscene and beating out a far more deserving entry that was an actual boss battle.

    - console game of the decade vice city? It really sits uneasily with me that the game got this because it really isn't that amazing a game and hasn't aged all that well. It's good at best and really it's totally undeserving.

    - Best story is another disappointment. Half-Life 2 isn't that great of a story and Bioshock while having a decent one I feel has been overrated in this category. There's much better games that deserve to be higher. I'm sure anyone that's played Silent Hill 2 will agree.

    - Best soundtrack/sound design going to vice city is a major slap in the face for all the other nominees. It's basically 'now that's what I call the 80's' with some awful low quality and sampled sound effects filling in for sound design. Is an 80's compilation no matter how good better than the stunning surroung sound mixing of Dead Space, Thief 2's use of a stunning soundscape as a gameplay concept or the orchestral score and sound design of shadow of the colossus.

Half-life 2 also appears too much for my liking. While I loved the game I think there's better releasedthis decade. I'm also surprised at the lack of the PC hardcore standing behind deus ex.

Best of the decade is basically a mix of populist choices and recent releases and is therefore for me unfortunately both depressing and utterly meaningless.

retro... seriously, what else did you expect? You said yourself it was predictable, so... you cant really complain :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,345 ✭✭✭landsleaving

Can't help but agree about the best of the decade. Fifa 09 is hardly the best sports game. It's just another Fifa, so it could have been any fifa from 01-10 if that had been the option. Tony Hawks would have been fair.

And boourns to no one else voting for MAdagascar Kartz for best driving game of the year. Realism is for losers. Penguins ftw!

I'm actually not complaining much about the game of the year awards, thought I'd be a lot worse. While I don't agree I think other than what I mentioned are deserving. Just would have liked a bit more unpredictability. Decade awards though is a different story.

I'm mainly glad MW2 didn't get a look in for game of the year

Scarecrow best boss battle of the decade? all you did was run from left to right!

Personally have to agree with all the HL2 awards! Looking back, it really was the game that had that 'holy ****' factor, and instantly immersed me in a fully realised world that has yet to be bettered (still the benchmark for character animation in particular). May be predictable, but there is sometimes (emphasis on the sometimes :pac:) a good reason things are popular. Uncharted 2 is also a deserving winner - nothing was near as polished, lively and enjoyable last year, but I'm also a bit confused about how it got game design of the year! Slightly surprised Arkham Asylum was so popular (great game and all, not sure if it deserves 'best story though!), but good to see some smaller titles like Flower get a look in too.

Overall good job to all involved, and the only thing I'd consider an outrage is Scarecrow winning over the End in the decade awards, but there was only 1% in it :pac:

I'm a little sad Silent Hill 2 got no love, it's in my top 5 games ever I would say.

    Other than that, great list.

I had a little chuckle with best PSP RGP of the year. Either they're all brilliant or just average.

Oh Mr.E you seemed to have misspelled Deus Ex under best PC game of the decade ;)

Still quite shocked/disappointed that it didn't get anything :(

Anyway cheers Mr.E for the work!

I counted the head****ery of the lead up to it as part of the battle as well -
the morgue/Wayne manor/alleyway where his parents died

I'm also pretty pleased the MW2 didn't get much love... Overpriced and massively undervalued if you're not interested in the MP at all like me

    :(
    Frank was soooo close...

Also, I still don't get how FFIX is an underrated game. I always thought it was the other way around.
XII is the one which doesn't get enough love.

So GTAIV is the second most overrated game of the decade as well as the best console game of the decade?! Make up your minds!

Disapointed at the low amount of MGS3 in the decade category

Its called democracy. Everyone gets a vote :P ......maybe it should be like animal farm though eh ??

All vote's are equal, but some are more equal than other ;) :P

On a side note, quite happy with MW2 not getting a lookin on the PCSide,
Very please with Best Story award for Bioshock.
Confused by Best boss battle (OF THE DECADE ??!) ...I can't even remember it too well tbh, wasn't it just you hiding from scarecrow and shining a light on him ?

Don't agree with many of the results but it could never be perfect, for example much as the boss battles in Metroid Prime may have been better than in Batman, I could not vote for Metroid as I have never played the 1st 2 games

And I never finished MGS3 as it bored me to tears :(

Endless Setlist in Rockband should count as a boss battle !! 53 songs in 1 session i think it is.

Took me and my mate about 8-10 hours + 2 Bottles of Vodka (11pm-8amish) to complete.

.....My big gripe(and we all have one if not more) would be how Fallout 3 was behind some Star Wars game in RPG of the decade .... then to compound it, 2nd overall of the decade, just don't see how it's second when its allegedly worse then some gammy Star Wars game(in another section) :D

    Gammy?
You must have miss-read; it said Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

While I'm not a fan of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, it's a very highly rated and respected game.

Duh - so it does. Sunday mornings weren't made for actually processing what I'm reading.

Very disappointed that Forza was such a runaway success in the racing categories. I thought Need for Speed: Shift was a shockingly good game, at least as good as Forza.

Wasn't expecting any less whinging and whining out of you to be quite honest. Take a look over the whole topic and re-read your comments. Never came accross anybody to cry about something so much. Your posts make me cringe, I can't speak for everyone, but I am sure there are others that feel the same...

Maybe less of the crying and a little more appretiation of the work that was put into this? I mean, if you are that pissed off about it, why not hold your own awards? That way you can have the games you like on top.

The results represent boards.ie gamer community, don't expect your favourite games to get a mention, let alone win it. There are games that probably should not be there, and games that deserve better, but it doesn't matter because the opinions are that of a small group of people.

I'm actually not complaining much about the game of the year awards, thought I'd be a lot worse. While I don't agree I think other than what I mentioned are deserving. Just would have liked a bit more unpredictability. Decade awards though is a different story.

The part in bold made me laugh, complaining is all you seem to do ;)

You seriously fail to realise that this is taken from the opinions of boards.ie members and not the whole world, it's not the be all of gaming awards.

On a side note, thanks for this all those involved, great work. ;)

I don't know about anyone else, but I read through Retr0's post, saying "Yep, Yes, Agree, True, Yep..." after each of his points.

The only one I disagree with was the Bioshock comment (I thought it had a great narrative), and I stand by Chronotrigger's inclusion, because it was the first time I'd played it, and it has aged very well.

I dunno, maybe next year have a separate survey for the over 25s? :)

I did like Bioshocks narrative but I think my opinions of the game were dulled a bit after playing system shock 2 a few weeks ago which I thought was better. I think there's better narratives.

And don't worry I do appreciate the effort that went into organising it.

Where did this bad name I'm getting come from? :(

Maya Fey for hottest character of the decade was a little worrying tbh... I was quite tempted to edit your post and replace the picture with one of pedobear:p

I think tman must of meant lolicon. 17 years old... come on, you know in anime anyone whos 17 is drawn like a 12 year old :pac:

There's also that image floating about of you dressed as a Japanese schoolgirl :D

In all seriousness though, Demon Souls doesn't even get 1 mention. Damn shame, damn damn shame. My personal best game of the year and in my top 5 for games of the decade.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

It's not a mainstream release. You have to import it. If Demon's Souls was released in the shops here, it would have swept the board (and I'm sure people would have found a loophole to get it nominated for Sports and Racing games too).

Demon's Souls was far and away game of the year for me too and well in my top ten of the decade. I'm disappointed it didn't sneak away with even a small award.

You'll probably get your chance again next year to pimp it, when it gets it's PAL release. Assuming it does. Doubt it will beat ME 2 though.

Endless Setlist in Rockband should count as a boss battle !! 53 songs in 1 session i think it is.

Took me and my mate about 8-10 hours + 2 Bottles of Vodka (11pm-8amish) to complete.

Lmao get rock band 2 my friend , then do that playing endless setlist 2 for the bladder of steal achievement on expert (no pausing or hitting guide button or failing , 84 songs in 1 sitting) pampers optional but recommended :D

I tried for it recently but gave up on the bladder cheevo after 2 hours and paused for comfort, came back and played over the space of a day, but sure didn't i forget about a song called visions, 2 songs from the end  could only make it 10 seconds in before failing out. Agree this should count as the boss battles of all boss battles, theres no luck involved just skill , which i lack it seems :(

It's looking extremely unlikely there'll be a PAL release.

Yeah, have RB2, but some of the songs seemed the way of Guitar Hero (noise and screams making a crap song for the sake of giving it some difficulty), whereas you enjoy the songs on RB1 :):D ...and although I like achievements, I'm not such a whore as to want to do 83 songs without at least a piss break for one :P :P We'd need at least 2 bottles of vodka and a bottle of Southern Comfort to do that !! :D:)
You were probably doing it on expert, we did the RB1 one on HARD as we couldnt face doing Run to the Hills on expert after 8 hours :P ...planning ye see

Ah pity i forgot about these votes

How the hell did Scarecrow win boss of the decade! Where can i find the nominees for this award? The end should have got it imo but i'd like to see cause really the scarecrow shouldn't be anywhere near that award.

SOTC really should have won best soundtrack too.

    Pretty much agree with Retro

perhaps "Nominations" threads should be changed to "Suggestions" and a handful of mods should be able to decide themselves what games should be voted on.

I'm not being sarcastic; some people here plays games here far more than I have time for and although I would consider 1 of the 3 games a year I play to be amazing, I know that people that play more games are able to make better judgement calls than I.

Resident Evil 4 should have been Game of the Decade!

I need to give it some more thought, but my first reaction is that I love that idea, James.

its the end of Democracy as we know it :o

Ah I don't think so. But there are issues with James' suggestion now that I think about it.
Even if we had put something like Demon's Souls in some of the categories, it still would have lost out (because only 4 people have played it) :)

I like the idea of an awards committee though...

I agree with the idea of an awards committee, but the whole issue of biased opinions would be an issue. Unles you assigned something like 3 committee members of each platform, and a majority vote on each suggestion.

Dunno. It makes things fairer, but at the same time complicates things.

and who the f**k says mods know more about games then a lot of the users here?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Chill out, Jazzy. Just thrashing out some ideas for next year. Better to do it now while the current process is still fresh in peoples minds. The committee doesn't have to be just mods.

I think we should keep the public vote. Perhaps we could also have a commitee to pick out games of the year in categories and try and agree on them as a seperate thing. Don't order them 1-5 but have say the top 5 RPGs of the year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,345 ✭✭✭landsleaving

I like that idea, might get more people knowlegeable about some less well-marketed titles. I'd have never played demon's souls without reading about it here, so if it won an award maybe even more people would give it a shot. I'm sure there'll be something similar next year as well, ao throwing some games in that aren't widely nomnated would be a good idea, just for variety's sake.

Also scarecrow was great as an experience only a game could deliver, with the coughing that makes you wonder what's going on, then that long corridor. Freaked me out I'll admit. But as a boss battle, pure and simple, it was a bit meh. Based on the build up nothing comes close, but if we're going on just the part where you fight scarecrow directly, not a chance it's the best boss battle of any decade. Maybe next year some clarity about what we should take into consideration for each category would improve the result. Or at least justify it.

Fair play to everyone who worked on it though, it was the damn public who messed up!

The problem is people play the games which get the most market exposure
    Dumb Modern Shooter 5
    Generic Interactive Film 2
    Iteration updated roster Soccer 2011
    Sandbox Criminal, Sh1thole City
The Best Part was when the Car exploded Racer

Are these games the best of the year? Sometimes they are but often not. They are the best sellers though and people can only vote based on what they have played.

Look at Demon Souls, how can people here vote in any great numbers for it when it didn't even get a PAL release. How can its lack of awards come as a disappointment or surprise to anyone?

My biggest gripe is to see titles like Uncharted 2 win awards, bar its production qualities it is the complete opposite direction I wish games were going. It's a 10 hour throw away game.

I never said anythng against a public vote, certainly keep that or else whats the point?

I just mean for deciding what games should be voted on. If a group decide that the top 5 games of the decade should be voted on and choose 4 really good games and Halo 3, and then Halo 3 wins by more votes, fair enough but at least the right games were nominated.

(continues to scramble to put worms back into the can)
