I can't think of a fairer system than that.

Looks like the only way out of photography is to leave the course.

    Oh the temptation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,584 ✭✭✭Diarmsquid

The system before that was to just being up early and registering for your production module before someone else does. Sorta like fastest fingers first or a radio call in competition.

Benny, i don't know why your even complaining, you have no right to because you never even did the preference thing, so they didn't even know what you wanted to do, so they just put you in photography, so quit moaning.

I think it is a fair system, sure you used an extremely similar system to get into the course in the first place, i.e. The people with the highest results get first preference, simple !!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

It just feels unfair because when I signed up for this course I assumed everyone got what they wanted in relation to this, I thought the streaming thing stopped in Secondary school.

    Anyway, first years be warned.

Question: When you finish the course do you come out with a general degree in Communication Studies or do they specify that you did radio/photography/video? I don't want to work in radio so a degreee like that would be pretty useless to me. Also in interviews and stuff would they ask?

Can't you just sit in on a the class you want, learn the skills, and them maybe swap is someone agrees to it?

I know I'm not communications but Multimedia also get a choice of Video, Audio, and Imaging. I think its just a first come first served thing during registration.
I chose video, but Imaging and graphic design is a really useful skill so If there's room I'm going to ask can I sit in on those classes for a while.
I don't think it really goes on your degree of anything, Its up to you to mention your modules and grades on you're CV, most people just put the name of the degree.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

^I don't think that's possible in the production modules, there's a limited amount of equipment or something.

I'm going to be stuck doing photography (an area that I have zero interest in) because of a set up that leaves many people in areas that they want to do and you're telling me that I have no right to complain?

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you there. I'll admit an error on my behalf by not filling out the form on time but I still think I have every right to give out about the system.

Oh come on! You didn't fill in the form? How is that anybody's fault apart from your own?

How do you ever expect to hold down a job?

I was working at the open days last year talking to people wanting to do CS. One of the first things nearly everyone asked me was about the different production modules and not a single one found anything wrong with the current system when I explained it to them.

I know you feel strongly about this Benny, but they can't make it any fairer. The way radio is taught there needs to be a small class, and after being in a class of 27 in video I know they'd really be stretching it to try get more in it. I never hear much about photography but I'm sure they'll tell you the same as well.

Thousands of students around the country don't get into various classes they aim for because they just didn't get the necessary results, it's a fact of life. But when you thrown in the fact you never filled out the form in time either it really seals the deal.

Some people have to repeat entire years to get the classes they want, but all it means for you is 2 hours a week...and you still get to do as much radio as you can with DCUfm as well. Lots of people never understood why I didn't choose radio last year but in the end I got the best of both worlds, and there's nothing to suggest you can't get the same experience out of the year either.

What I'm saying is that they were haven't been helpful with my attempts to switch.

Won't have to worry about that with a Communications degree.

I'm not going to bother going on about the subject any further. It's my problem and if I don't drop the subject now people will be coming with their ill-informed suggestions and criticism. Always happens on this forum.

As for Daysha I can see what you mean. If it wasn't for my hatred of photography it wouldn't be a bad position to be getting expertise in two different fields.

Finally, where the hell are all the first years? A few have posted but last year this thread was several pages long (with input coming from incoming CS students and not moaning second years like myself).

You simply cannot complain about a system that you never even entered into, and then expect people to go out of their way to help you fix a problem that you created from being purely lazy. Get the boat !!!

I said I wouldn't discuss this further but I will clarify that me not filling out the form wasn't out of laziness. The poll never said when it was going to expire, so I didn't know how long I had. I was mulling over putting video or radio as my number one choice and eventually decided on radio. When I went to fill it out, it said it had expired.

    I believe I predicted ill-informed criticisms earlier.

Right, everyone relax about production modules (especially Bennys) ... Its getting boring now. This is a thread for the new 1st years, they probably stopped posting here because of all this sh*te talk in the first place.

Now, incoming 1st years, as you were...

is there much practical work in first year?
    filming/editing videos and the like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

There's barely any tbh,one hour per week. In semester 1 you go out and film/record a few bits (Time lapse anyone?) and in semester 2 you focus more on editing.

Anyone could do it with their eyes closed, it's so simple.

Phasers is probably right, its more of an introductory year. You'll do plenty more with MPS theres lots of jobs for everyone.

Incoming First Years, please don't be worried about coming into this course as a result of this thread, it really is a great, as is DCU, and the people who take the course each year. You will thoroughly enjoy it, and you will see how minuscule the problem that has been already mentioned in this thread really is next year, oh and congrats on getting in ! ! !

    Lay off Benny will you?

He's left it now so you should too.

Just wanted to ask...when do we start in DCU? It says on the orientation schedule that our orientation doesn't start until Wednesday but do we have to be on Monday (the first day of Orientation Week) for any reason? I know it sounds like a stupid question but just in case I miss anything...

It is up to you if you want to come in on Monday or Tuesday but given that your orientation schedule begins on Wednesday, there is nothing on Monday or Tuesday that requires any CS1s.
However there'd be no harm in coming in anyway, soak up a bit of the atmosphere, have a look around etc but that's all up to you.

Regarding practical experience, 1st year does tend to lack in that department(As it does for journalism students). However, there will be ample opportunity to pick up some practical experience by getting involved in DCUfm or DCUtv.
You'll be hearing a lot more about that in the days to come but from someone who has gained a small amount of industry experience, I can't emphasise enough how being involved in DCUfm has stood to me.

    Oh oh oh!

There is a DCUtv Meeting Monday, tomorrow at 5.30pm in CG02 in the Henry Grattan building for all those interested in getting involved this year and also anyone who is interested in doing some some shooting around campus for Orientation Week and Freshers Week.

It's all going to be on DCUtv News which will be shown in the NuBar every Monday evening.

Come along, come along, it'll be fabulous and we're gonna have a lot of fun

If you've any questions just PM me :pac:

Everyone is welcome, CS and Multimedia and every other faculty. Oh and freshers come along too! We are looking for a Fresher to do some presenting around the campus this week :D

I missed the orientation, worried I missed some valuable getting to know people time? :(

Also for some reason I can't get my timetable cos I couldn't register online due to a finance block cos I was in UCD last year so they did it manually in the college but I still can't seem to log in, they haven't been very helpful about it either, just shipping me from one office to the other but anyway by any chance does anyone have the timetable just so I know where I'm going on Monday? :)

If there are any Communication Students interested in writing, storyboarding, scriptwriting, comedy or drama give me a PM.

There's a scriptwriting group night tomorrow in CG01 at 5pm, come along if you like it's very casual and laid back should be good fun. We're hoping to write lots of sketches and put together scripts for short films.

Is it me or are there a ****load of modules missing from that. Did they remove a load of the content from the 1st year course? e.g. Psychology, Politics, Study skills off the top of my head

well considering you're the only person I've talked to in the course so far I wouldn't mind knowing you who you are, we'll figure it out! Blonde hair, blue eyes and always wearing some form of checkered shirt!
