I'm in CS this year and it's 90% girls!

We use Final Cut Pro for video editing, but there isn't much of it at the start.

Well Im in Multimedia, we're the people who focus on the tech a bit more. We're using Final Cut Pro 7. I assume its the same cos we use the same computer labs as the rest of the school of communications

I never understood the high girl/guy ratio in CS. I'm in CS2 and out of the 75+ people in my class I'd say there's 15/20 guys max. I'm not complaining or anything, I just never got why it could appeal more so to girls than anyone else!

One piece of advice I'd give you is practice with FCP as much as possible in 1st year. If you decide to major in video for your final two years the lecturers will kinda expect you to have a good grasp of the software, so just use it as much as possible in your 1st year, especially if youre aiming to choose it ahead of photo/radio afterwards.

Multimedia seems to be the more male one for some reason. I had a seminar group last semester of 30 people and there was one guy in it! :(

If only DCU were smart enough to put this information in their prospectus.

In the current class moving into CS2 there are about 8 males in the 18-20 demographic.

Needless to say the banter is quite poor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

The lack of guys does lead to a bit of girly overkill. I don't care what you wore out last night, nor do I care about your boyfriend. Or your little pink bike, etc.

Atleast there's pussy falling out of your pockets!

I know there's 16 males but half of them are in their mid to late 20s. I'm not saying that they're not good craic or anything but my point was that there are only about 8 of us who are younger than 21.

I'm actually dying to get into radio and you're dying to get out of it.

Shows that the e-mail we recently got saying the system is fair is a load of boll**** because if the system was fair there wouldn't be so many people stuck doing a module they have no interest in doing.

There'll probably be a place opening in radio soon... start sending Des some fruit baskets and he may pick you. Completely fairly, of course.

Not unless someone leaves radio, which isn't looking likely at the moment.

I reckon e-mail Marie-Lousie personally. If you *REALLY* want it, she'll listen to your pleas, but you'll have to be very convincing, I've heard she doesn't like big classes. But she does seem to like a bit of confidence and conviction.

That said Karl Grimes is a genius and his classes are a treat. If you're anyway interested in photography, I wouldn't change. He's won a lot of people over this year that were a bit 'meh' at the start.

Count yerself lucky with photography though - Video seems to be a disaster!

Well I'll give it a try but she made it clear last year that she doesn't like big classes.

I'm sure Karl Grimes is a great lecturer but I have absolutely ZERO interest in photography. No matter how good he is he will never make me interested in the stuff. It really pisses me off that I'm going to be back learning shayte that I have no interest in, it's like the Leaving Cert all over again. I came to college so I wouldn't have to put up with that anymore. I find the prospect of waiting in a dole queue more appealing than studying photography.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

Couldn't agree more Benny, and I actually feel terrible being in Radio when you want it so much and I've no interest. I think there should have been some kind of warning in the prospectus. I want video, why would they think I'd enjoy radio?

    fair selection process, yeah right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 534 ✭✭✭Benny Lava

I hated my secondary school but they had a system that would be very beneficial in this situation.

Before we did our Junior Cert they made us fill out forms stating which subjects we would most likely want to do for the Leaving Cert. Then, based on the feedback, they made extra/less classes to accommodate as many students as possible, and then allowed some switching if necessary.

However here it seems more of an "accommodate some of the students and screw the rest" approach.

I can't believe I just sorted of praised my secondary school.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

It seems to reek of a system where the students don't mean jack and once classes are full then they're happy.

Phasers, have you any interest in photography at all? Even the slightest bit more than radio?

Maybe you and Benny could switch if it suits if radio and photography are all the same to you.

It is an annoying system though, apparantly they only changed it to the current method 2 years ago. I really don't see why it has to be 28 students in each class, maybe in video because its all group work, but alot of work in radio is on your own or in a group of 2 or 3, and everything in photo is done alone.

I doubt you could switch with someone from radio into video, but the chances are much higher of switching from photo to radio. Benny, if I was you I'd look at the radio list at everyone who got it as their 2nd choice and see if they want to swap cos I'd say they were hoping for video so much that they didn't care too much about 2nd and 3rd choices and may have hardly any preference in terms of radio over photo.

    CS2 shall be interesting....

I'm doing video so yes, I wonder how inspring William Chook will be.

Also I think I'll pick French as well, always good to have a language with a degree.

    MPS ahoooooy!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 132 ✭✭madmandaniel

if you choose a language you are able to go study in the relevant country arent you?
Id really love to go over to paris for abit or whatever..
what year does this happen, and how long do you stay away?

I really feel bad for yee all - this is a horrible situation to be in. Marie Louise is an inspiring lecturer, highly talented and several former students of hers told me they learnt more about any other medium in her class - she teaches you to see with your ear and hear with your eyes (that will make sense by xmas)

If you find someone to swap with and inform both lecturers then it should be okay.

To change this system I am afraid there will need to be a wave of complaints put in - obviously this wont benefit this years second years but it would avoid this next year.

Somebody mentioned the fact that this wasn't in the prospectus and it should have been. This is a very good point - however unless you can afford to take DCU to the High Court (as its a state body so your require a judicial review) then off with you.

Also just for those who don't want to be in radio - those who ended up in last year are happy to be in radio now.

    Best of luck folks though!

I was recently in contact with one of the powers that be and it seems that it's not a simple case of organising a swap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

Which is ridiculous, if both students agree that they want to swap it should surely just be a matter of swapping the names?
