Wolfe Tones were beaten by a very good Bennettsbridge team today. Kilkenny champions were 2 points up at HT 0-8 to 0-6. Wolfe Tones were always going to need a goal but it never came and could only score 2 points in the second half. Final score 0-15 to 0-8

Is the match tonight on tv

    clare 0-18 - 0-17 limerick

a tight finish to a very close game , the hurlers hung on to win our first version of silverware since the all ireland , this in truth was our first real test of the competition as cork are still in transition under new management and waterford still in experiment mode tonight was the closest we go to competive hurling and wile both teams held back on the selection front it still turned out to be a cracker and one limerick could very easily won

while wining is nice, the main objective was to get some competitive games under our belt before the league starts, and with no disrespect to offaly or kerry because its not that long ago that we were in the same position but tonight was probably a more important game for finding out one or two things about ourselves

Scorers Colin Ryan 0-5 (2f); Bobby Duggan, Peter Duggan 0-3 each; John Conlon, Cathal O’Connell 0-2 each; Cian Dillon, David Fitzgerald, Conor Cleary 0-1 each

the u21 footballers lost by a point to down in the peter mcnulty cup semi final , hopefully the good progress can filter through to the munster championship , tough ask with strong kerry and tipperary teams waiting
but credit to niall hawes and co for there efforts so far , and hopefully the trend continues in which the smaller clubs in west clare can keep producing players in a similar fassion to there east clare counterparts in hurling

    final score

    down 1-12 2-08 clare

    Clare Team v Sligo 14:00 @miltown

    joe Hayes
Cian O'Dea Kevin Hartnett Martin McMahon
Peirse Lillis Gordon Kelly Jamie Malone
    Gary Brennan Cathal O'Connor
Enda Coughlan Shane McGrath Sean Collins
Martin O'Leary David Tubridy Eoin Cleary

hopfully the footballers can get off to a good start at home to sligo in miltown , with two away days in the next two weeks against tipperary in clonmel next week and limerick in newcastle west the week after, a win here today is almost a must , expect a very tight game today conditions will be fairly stormy on the west coast come throw in , here's hoping for a good campaign and an improvement on last year

    clare 1-11 0-07 sligo

comfortable win for the footballers in the end in what was the wost conditions i have seen for a inter county game , first half sligo started with a storm at there backs went 0-03 to -0-1 points clear early on but failed to kick on after that only managing one more score before half time ,

with the scores settled at 04-02 clare used the wind much better in the second hiting 4 quick points in the first 10 minuets before a sligo rally , gary brennans fortuitous goal with 7 minuets left changed the game putting 5 between the sides , clare did enough to see the game out with a couple of late cathal o'connor and eoin cleary points still alot of work to do but a good win none the less . good first outings by perice lillis and cian o'dea with david tubs, eoin cleary and martin mcmahon the best on the pitch

    scorers
david tubridy 0-6 eoin cleary 0-3
    cathal o'connor , shane mcgrath 0-1 each
    gary brennan 1-0

tony kelly out for 8 weeks with ankle injury , given the division we are in i think both he and podge when he returns should be wrapped in cotton wool for the championship plus it will give the chance to one or two fringe players to stake a claim in the side

Yup, heard a rumor that Davey is freaking that he got injured playing colleges and he's blaming Lohan for playing him when he wasn't 100%

I think the damage was done at that stage and it was made worse with other training or something. There are so many rumours going around you wouldn't know what to believe. 1 that's getting a lot of traction is that they trained 15 times over 13 days at Christmas.

I've heard that Domhnall O'Donovan has left the panel by the way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,485 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

didnt hear anything about o'donovan , but i think kelly got injured before the DIT game last week for a UL , he didnt play in that game anyway

as regards training , i heard petty much the same thing that they were training every morning from late december through the munster league with maybe only one or two days off over the month . commitment gone mad if you ask me, early January would have been time enough to start training

I would have thought that they would have had enough base fitness without having to do a whole lot more, I guess it's sh!t or burst at this stage so they are doing everything they can, anything less than promotion an a game in Croke Park (i.e. All Ireland Semi Final) will be deemed a poor performance.

By the way, anyone else here that the pitches in Tulla are a complete disaster, 1 training session and they've cut up, other new pitches in the county are holding up with senior training but the new "State of the Art" facilities are closed again.

its built on a complete bog , pure wasteland half way between nora hincheys pub and tulla cross , all that land was always bad , i have'nt been out there lately but i can imagine with the wether at the moment it is in a bad way

nothing surprizes me with the county board , look at the state of the site where the new stadium was proposed to be built just of the ennis bypass , it was under 3 foot of water all through christmas

If they built that stadium the flood would be up to the crossbar.

I've heard from fairly good authority that the upgrade to Cusack Park doesn't have any upgrades to the dressing rooms.

the footballers are in tipp town later today for there 2nd game of the league, and with a number of clonmel players not included in the tipp squad , along with one or two joining up with the hurling panel this year it presents one of the best opportunities to finally get one over the neighbors it would be our first in the league since 1992,
one change as martin o'leary (injured) is replaced by keelan sexton , 2 points in this one would ease any fears of a relegation battle heading into the two week break

    joe Hayes
Cian O'Dea Kevin Hartnett Martin McMahon
Pearse Lillis Gordon Kelly Jamie Malone
    Gary Brennan Cathal O'Connor
Enda Coughlan Shane McGrath Sean Collins
Keelan Sexton David Tubridy Eoin Cleary

We have to win our home games and get an away win to stay up, if we win today we have potential to be in the mixup for promotion

    Clare 1-07 tipperary 2-07

too little too late for the footballers , after a poor start to the first half with the aid of a strong wind clare spent most of the first half chasing the game after conceding an early connor sweeney goal , tipp were well organised and forced us to shoot from distance and forcing us to kick endless amount of wides

second half started a little brighter with two quick david tubridy points put us back within 1 , tipp rallied half way through the half going 3 in front , it looked like a draw was on the cards when jamie malone rattled the net with 5 minuets to go t leave the sides level 1-07 apiece , but the most frustrating part of the game was 30 seconds later when we let tipp back down the other end of the field and brian fox to finsh off a well worked move and finish off any chance of a revival , despite one or two late clare half goal chances,

on the positive side of things the defensive display especially in the second half was hard to fault , we acquitted ourselves well against probably still the best team in the division and a repeat performance will see us at the very least stay at this level for next year , however we do seem a little over relient on eoin cleary and david tubridy for scores

scorers Clare : david tubridy 0-3 eoin cleary 0-2 gary brennan 0-2 jamie malone 1-0

Tipperary: philip austin 0-5 brian fox 1-1 conor sweeney 1-0 josh keane 0-1

on the basis of some of the stuff we done today in the second half we would have an outside chance of going up but we would need tipp and kildare to slip up a few times , my on personal opinion , i dont see us going up or down . the boost from last year would be the fact that the young lads called in have been excellant the likes of pearse lillis and cian o'dea , today declan mcmahon came in for his debut and did well dean ryan has to come back from injury , damien burke and sean o donoghue are too more young lads out injured that will strengthen things also alan o'neill is back in the mix as well , i expect us the get the requuired to stay up with maybe a little more with that , but whether it would be enough to go up would be a hard ask at the moment

The land it is built on isn't that bad, one side of it was fairly low alright. There is a limestone base there so to say it is bog is incorrect, most of it was dry farm land. There was mountains of filling put in there when they were doing it too so if it is cutting up it is more likely the construction that is the problem, along with the current weather of course.

starting fifteen for the first round of the league , if last nights opener in 1B is anything to go by we will be needing to put up a fairly descent score today ahead of the trip to wexford next sunday ,there were 20 points between the sides the last time we met offaly . dont think it will be by that much today but still hard to get excited about division 1B

dont expect a seat in the new " state of the art " stand ,its not open today , cant see much diffrence other a new roof and new seats ? crazy!!!

That is a far more accurate assessment of the site.

    Clare 2-21 Offaly 0-15

A lackluster performance and at time's sloppy opener for the hurlers against a spirited offaly side , the visitors started brighter quickly going 0-3 to 0-1 in front in the opening 5 minuets with scores from shane dooley pat camon and paddy murphy canceling out a colin ryan free, the faithful held there lead up to the 20 minuet mark leading 0-6 to 0-4 , the clare short passing game leaving a lot to be desired , but 3 big scores in quick succession by john conlon , david reidy , and colin ryan , turned the tied, and when peter duggen found the net on the 33rd minuet it left a flattering scoreline of 1-09 to 0-7 in clare's favor 4 minuets of first half added time and five more clare scores left the game looking ominous at 1-13 to 0-7 at half time

if the first half scoreline paved over cracks of a poor performance , the second provided a few minor scares , despite hitting from the front and tagging on another two quick david reidy and colin ryan points at the start of the second half , shane dooley started the mini offaly revival with 3 frees, before clares peter duggen and offaly's connor dougan were sent off for a minor altercation off the ball on the 50th minute

clare went to sleep after that only managing one bobby duggen point within the next 10 minuets of play leaving it 1-17 to 0-12 , shane dooley had a chance to bring the game back to 5 the 60th min but his poorly struck penalty was saved by pat kelly , no doubt it would have made for a nervy finish , but half backs david mac and connor cleary kicked thins back into gear with two points to see clare through , a late aaron shanagher goal put a gloss on the scorline ,

much better performance is required for a win in wexford park next week , the wides count was also in the region of 15 or 16 , a sluggish performance with starting full forward line of connor mcgrath duck honan and shane 'odonnell scoering one point between them , on the positive side there were some very good performances by david reidy and colm galvin in midfield , colin ryan and john conlon were our best forwards while cian dillon , david mac at center back and connor cleary at wing back were the best on the field

    scorers clare
    colin ryan 0-9
    john conlon 0-3
bobby duggan , david mac 0-2 each
conor cleary , cian dillon, colm galvin, david reidy, shane o'donnell 0-1 each
aaron shanagher , peter duggen 1-0 each

    offaly

    shane dooley 0-7
    pat camon 0-3
pat murphy shane kinsella 0-2 each
    conor dougan 0-1
