    Good win today.

What was Duggan sent off for ?

a scuffle with his offaly marker it didnt look like much , in fact i taught he was hard done by , he seemed to be more of the victim inn the crime but it seemed like nothing , i didnt get the best view of it though

Not a great start to the year in terms of discipline and wides. 2 things that have been killing us recently.

    Clare 2-21 Offaly 0-15

A lackluster performance and at time's sloppy opener for the hurlers against a spirited offaly side , the visitors started brighter quickly going 0-3 to 0-1 in front in the opening 5 minuets with scores from shane dooley pat camon and paddy murphy canceling out a colin ryan free, the faithful held there lead up to the 20 minuet mark leading 0-6 to 0-4 , the clare short passing game leaving a lot to be desired , but 3 big scores in quick succession by john conlon , david reidy , and colin ryan , turned the tied, and when peter duggen found the net on the 33rd minuet it left a flattering scoreline of 1-09 to 0-7 in clare's favor 4 minuets of first half added time and five more clare scores left the game looking ominous at 1-13 to 0-7 at half time

if the first half scoreline paved over cracks of a poor performance , the second provided a few minor scares , despite hitting from the front and tagging on another two quick david reidy and colin ryan points at the start of the second half , shane dooley started the mini offaly revival with 3 frees, before clares peter duggen and offaly's connor dougan were sent off for a minor altercation off the ball on the 50th minute

clare went to sleep after that only managing one bobby duggen point within the next 10 minuets of play leaving it 1-17 to 0-12 , shane dooley had a chance to bring the game back to 5 the 60th min but his poorly struck penalty was saved by pat kelly , no doubt it would have made for a nervy finish , but half backs david mac and connor cleary kicked thins back into gear with two points to see clare through , a late aaron shanagher goal put a gloss on the scorline ,

much better performance is required for a win in wexford park next week , the wides count was also in the region of 15 or 16 , a sluggish performance with starting full forward line of connor mcgrath duck honan and shane 'odonnell scoering one point between them , on the positive side there were some very good performances by david reidy and colm galvin in midfield , colin ryan and john conlon were our best forwards while cian dillon , david mac at center back and connor cleary at wing back were the best on the field

    scorers clare
    colin ryan 0-9
    john conlon 0-3
bobby duggan , david mac 0-2 each
conor cleary , cian dillon, colm galvin, david reidy, shane o'donnell 0-1 each
aaron shanagher , peter duggen 1-0 each

    offaly

    shane dooley 0-7
    pat camon 0-3
pat murphy shane kinsella 0-2 each
    conor dougan 0-1

Did Davy play a 3 man full forward line? Be interesting to see if Donal Og has any input on tactics. Need to play Conor McGrath close to goals

would like to see us rotate the full forward line too the two wolfe tones lads brought a different dimension , i taught today would have been a good day to bring the likes of shane o'donnell and mcgrath off the bench ,

we are still very lazy at times with our tackling but i hope that will be rectified with time and fitness , we could have looked very red faced had shane dooley scored that penalty our wides count would have been a much bigger talking point

they seemed move honan out the field in the first half ,conor and shane got swamped by the offaly defense most of the time having to drop out wide by the sideline to win possession, after the sending off's the game did become a bit more orthodox but most of our scores came from out the field or from frees

for me , we haven't found away to use the full forward line properly , so i would like to see us rotate things

How was the tackling today? Was it the usual cynical tugging and shirt pulling?

it was'nt as bad as last year but we still give away a number of frees especially after losing possession , the choke tackle they used last year was'nt evident today , but instead of wining 50/50 balls on the ground we are giving away frees in that area , probably over did it with the short passing in the first half as i was saying we lost alot of possession and gave away frees instead of wining the ball back ,

in fairness all that will come with fitness , we were not that sharp at times with the passing so that led to tings going astray , offaly were a strong physical team so we were not going to push them around , wexford are similar sized team to our selves we will know more after next week , i suppose this is where paul kinnerks influence kicks in

Extremely disappointing to have ANOTHER man sent off but it's good to get a win in the first game. I hope the wides will disappear as the year goes on, the players wouldn't have much work done on skills at this stage of the season so at least they are getting into position.

I'd love to be able to do an audit on the work that was done on the "stand".

Indeed.. rumour has it that they are reusing the old urinals to save money..

Meanwhile at last count I heard that Davy has now got a back room team of 32 people... Harder to get on the county team than the back room team!

Sure the old ones were never used anyway  The corruption that's involved in the county board is a joke at this stage, Tulla cost 5 million don't forget.

I heard it was over 30 for a long time, assuming 30 staff, 2 hour training sessions 3 times a week, 1 3 hour match a week, 26 weeks and a minimum "expenses" rate of €9.15 that's a cost of €64,233, that's before any other kind of expense, some amount of money for a back room team.

I think a lot of the go-fors only get diesel money and the honour of being on the county panel.

How many would footballers have in their backroom team? 32 is alot along with panel of 30 players players. Dressing room must be cramped on match day :)

Dublin are similar.. The arrived a few years ago with second bus for the support team!

At least the footballers only use one ball and don't break hurleys!

yeah the stand is a joke , the only logic i can think of as in not extending the seating arrangement is something to do with planing , the only other addition it would seem it the new tunnel they have leading to the dressing rooms , all this cost somewhere in the region of 2 million quid which is ridicules, when you consider the amount of money that is been raised by suporter groups and buisness people sure why would'nt they waste it

i got it wrong as regards caherlohan , i was under the impression it was built on a bad site which it was'nt , but dose anyone know if there is a 3D or for a better word all weather pitch out there , surely that's the first thing a "state of the art complex " would require, pitch rotation in this weather would not work

It's still the same old dressing rooms. They also got money from central council for a lot of this stuff. I'd say the famous 2 sets of accounts are in overdrive at the moment.

I have to agree on the new stand, all I see done is they took the concrete blocks and put in plastic seats and changed the roof to exactly as it looked before, I mean it doesn't even extend to cover the lower down seats. Seems a ridiculous amount of money for pretty much the same bog standard stand with no increase in size. You would think that if they are going to do it at all, that they would do it right so it would last for years to come.

Ya see, you are assuming there that all the money that was said to be spent on it was spent on it, just cause they say that X amount of money was spent on it doesn't mean that it was spent on it. For example, it might cost €500 for a urinal and they might need 20 of them, they might have 20 of them now, that's 10 grand of expense, the fact that they used the old ones doesn't matter, it would have cost 10 grand for them

I can't think of a county ground anywhere with as puny a main stand. We'll be down in Wexford next weekend sitting in a fine stand that puts ours to shame. So do most of the others. It's embarassing.

And while I'm on it, why the hell couldn't they build a proper stand on the river side? There is room and you could have gone high as it wouldn't be overshadowing any houses and the walkway could be underneath. The Tesco side could then be a full length decent terrace. Doesn't matter I suppose as we'll never see it now anyway.

That is exactly what I have been saying for years. By raising the river side stand back closer to the wall and seats put in it would have been very similar in size to the New stand in thurles. There is not even bucket seats in the stand but plenty fir the chosen few who don't bother to go to the less glamorous games.

Don't be putting common sense into Cusack Park, do you remember the old days before Aldi, they had enough ground (pun intended) to build an amazing stadium, just move the pitch over at an angle so it started at the start of the stand and you'd have an amazing ground. As the father of 2 young daughters I fear for the day I bring them to a match and have to bring them to the bathroom.

A big tip of the hat to any one making the very long journey to the south east especially on such a bad day today , will be settling for syll , tony and the deferred tg4 coverage myself

after a fairly hit and miss performance last week against offaly , its fair to say a spot light might be hanging over one or two players today , maybe one or two questions to be answered in the full forward line in particular

aron shanagher starts in a team that could be without anywhere up to 10 players but given the strength in depth at the moment we are still looking strong , davy is keeping us all guessing with the no.12 position , i would expect to see bobby duggen or aaron cunningham start there as john conlon is due to take a late fitness test , while i hope to see david fitzgerld get another run , he looked good on his interdiction last sunday

must win game in wexford park today if we are to have any chance of wining the division , no galvin , peter duggen , or honan from last weeks starting line up but i think we are still strong enough to get over the line here

There is a gale going stright up the pitch for Clare in the second half and now the rain is stopping, Clare look to be playing a 1 man full forward line and unfortunately our forwards are really lacking physicality, looks like Aaron Cunningham is going to come on now. 1-10 to Wexford, 0-11 to Clare. Clare gave away a really soft penalty at the end of the first half.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Regional Midwest Moderators Posts: 24,053 Mod ✭✭✭✭Clareman

Great point by Bobby Duggan to level it up after 6 minutes, 1-10 to 0-13

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Regional Midwest Moderators Posts: 24,053 Mod ✭✭✭✭Clareman

Clare really have a hurricane at their backs here, if they don't win this from here they're going no-where, 1-11 to 0-14 after 66. Lee Chin is putting on a display in midfield though

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Regional Midwest Moderators Posts: 24,053 Mod ✭✭✭✭Clareman

Davy getting talked to by the ref now and he's still mouthing to the forth officials.

Clare have a free in after Wexford f**ked up a short free out.

Clare up by a point after 67.45

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Regional Midwest Moderators Posts: 24,053 Mod ✭✭✭✭Clareman

Up by 2 now (worst lead in hurling). Colin Ryan has to be man of the match for Clare.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Regional Midwest Moderators Posts: 24,053 Mod ✭✭✭✭Clareman

Reidy with a poor attempt by the Wexford goalie gives it straight to Bobby Duggan, Clare up by 3 now after 70 and have a scorable free now, this should be a Clare win from here

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Regional Midwest Moderators Posts: 24,053 Mod ✭✭✭✭Clareman

Yup, Clare up by 4, 10 points to Colin Ryan, 1 minute of injury time to be played.
