In a previous incarnation of MCS I would have thrown my hat at the whole bl**dy thing after losing so much fitness. This MCS is made of sterner stuff, though. Onwards, ever onwards……

While the pace would disgrace a stalled glacier, I actually felt like I was running again. I increased the pace throughout this run, starting with a 7:46 Km and finishing with a 6:56 one. I could have probably done another one or two at this pace. That said, I’m sitting at a desk now and far away paces are golden!! :p

The pooch was proud of me. At last I’m starting to keep up with the hairy b*gger!! :D:D

Didn’t have a whole lot of time to fit in a run so went for quality rather than quantity. This was about the pace I did the Dunboyne 4 Mile in. Pleased with the apparent improvement.

    7.06Km in 51:52 (7:21 min/Km) Gormanston Beach, Co. Meath

I was to be in Cushinstown at a primary schools relay competition and so planned to head off the 10 miles or so to Gormanston to run on the beach. When I got there, similar to my last expedition to the coast, there was a live-fire exercise taking place, and so was consigned to the country roads around the college rather than the wind-swept panorama I had hoped for.

Nonetheless, I enjoyed running in a different environment, but was sans pooch

Easy day tomorrow (i.e. no running) and then the Simon Cumbers/Paddy Hyland Race (6Km) in Navan on Friday evening. Not expecting much but would like to see some improvement in performance/pace over the Dunboyne Race last March.

I hear ya! It's only in the past couple of weeks or so that I've started to feel like I'm getting back to myself again.
    Is your race today

Aye. 8pm in Navan. Now, if only these fn showers would buzz off I might even look forward to it:p

It gets confusing logging past runs in the present and talking about the future which is now ;-)

    Race Report

6Km in 38:46 (6:27 min/Km) Simon Cumbers Memorial/Paddy Hyland Memorial Race, Navan, Co. Meath

A showery, breezy day was not pointing to an enjoyable jaunt around the outskirts of Navan but as the evening wore on the wind abated and the showers subsided. Time to race.

This race is part of the Meath Race League for 2011 and so I was duty bound to compete. In order to be classified in the League I need to complete 8 out of 13 events. This is No. 3 out of 4.

The participant numbers were down on previous years but the course was still the same. Having completed my ablutions, a short warm-up around the tartan track, then an easy 800m jog out to the start.

The race started a few minutes after 8pm and in accordance with tradition the field disappeared out of sight within minutes. My race plan was to set a steady pace at the start, try and hold it through the mid-race and finish as strong as possible.

As a 6Km race it’s hard to judge the pace, something between 5K and 10K pace is what’s required. My early pace was a bit brisk (1st K – 6:14; 2nd K 6:22 (slight uphill drag); 3rd K 6:14) and coming into mid-course I was beginning to feel it (4th K – 6:27 (slight uphill drag) then the wheel nuts started to loosen. 5th K – 6:36. At 5.3K I was forced to pull over to throw up  (lost 42 seconds). I then continued onto the finish (6th K – 6:45) at a more modest pace.

Despite the pit stop I am delighted with my performance. I was only 1:21 slower than last year, coming off of less training. My pace in March over 4 miles was 7:10 min/Km so happy to see an improvement on that.

This result gives me great heart. I’ve been a bit doubtful of how things have been going recently. The plan now is to start to build up the distance/time of my long run, while keeping the other runs around 8Km. I’m not doing any faster runs as I have 4 5K races between now and the Dunshaughlin 10K at the end of June. These should suffice as regards pace runs.

    Race Report

4.95Km in 32:44 (6:37 min/Km) Tom Byrne Memorial 5K, Lucan Harriers AC, Lucan, Co. Dublin

A blustery old day. Rocked up to Lucan Harriers’ club house in good time, collected my number, ready for the off. Number collection/registration running like clock-work, “comfort” facilities very good – no queues, car parking right beside the club house/finish area.

A wee shower blew through as I made my way the 100m down to the start. Off bang on time.

The course starts on the main Lucan – Newcastle road but after approx 500m we turned into Griffeen Park, where the course uses the well paved path network. Past the football pitches where Anto and Decco were playing a blinder, past the skateboard park and the graffiti walls, then into the teeth of the gathering gale.

At this stage I felt I was going backwards. I had started off rather briskly (maybe too briskly) and started to feel at this stage. First 2 Kms were done in 6:15 splits, the final 3 Kms in 6:45 splits. Stopped in the last Km to swallow xxx, well you don’t need to know that do you? At least it didn’t catch me by surprise like in the Simon Cumbers race. :o

My pacing has gone to the dogs. I haven’t run a decently paced race since last September when I pb’d in the Bohermeen 5 Mile. Hopefully the series of 5Ks before Dunshaughlin will give me more of a feel for the spreading out of the effort.

So, happy enough with my performance. Slower pace than Simon Cumbers but that is down to the conditions and pacing. Next race is the Bob Heffernan 5K on Tuesday 24th.

    Race Report

4.95Km in 32:43 (6:37 min/Km) Bob Heffernan Memorial 5K, Na Fianna AC, Johnstown Bridge, Co. Meath

A great event, as would be expected from Na Fianna AC. Great organisation and serious grub-fest afterwards. 1.99Km trot out to the start as a warmup.

With my experience from Sunday ringing in the back of my throat I was determined to pace this run better. Held myself back much better at the start and held it well throughout. First 4K paces varied from 6:35 to 6:42. Pushed on for last K to 6:27. Suffice it to say my lunch remained on-board!! A much more enjoyable run altogether.

An unavoidable downside from this race is the fact that a post-race showing of the finish line video is made. Funny how your mental image of how you look when you are running diverges from actuality!!

10.01Km in 1:18:05 (7:48 min/Km) Club Grounds, Frayne, Athboy, Co. Meath

A combination of hectic social life (not mine  ), late nights (mine :) ), a trip to A&E (in the role of doting father :o ) and generally being CBA (me again :) ) meant I missed 3 runs and hadn’t gotten out in a week.

So out we went, me and the ever-excitable pooch, and trundled around the field, sniffing for rabbits (the dog, not me :p ) and generally enjoying the experience (both of us :D:D ).

Back in the groove – sort of.
