Went to 'Ricardo's in Eden Gate - the rebranded Pizza's n Cream restaurant - for a meal this evening with family, and loved it. Great little place.

Everyone loved their food, service was excellent, restaurant itself is very nice too - nice decor etc. Food is basically the same as the Pizzas N Cream menu in bray, but has a few extra's on it.

Certainly recommend it, and somewhere I really do hope does well, it deserves too imo.

thought the p & C up in Eden gate was a disgrace so this is good to hear,

so now look at the thread title.............does this place qualify as a contender ?i would guess not

also,no restaurant 'deserves' to do well imo

I don't get what you are talking about....

It is a restaurant. What category are you talking about? Why would it not qualify as a contender? Are we simply not classing Eden Gate as Greystones? (Delgany is the address I suppose but it is so freaking close....)

I see the Hungry Monk has been given a notification of grant of permission for the link building between The Hungry Monk and the old e-baby premises. Should be interesting to see what the finish is like externally with the link building facade being completed in stone with an archway - very monastic!

Just back from a great meal in Cavistons, a welcome addition to our culinary nightlife. Hope they continue this beyond Christmas.

€19.95 for two courses (early bird). Had Hake which was close to epic & a very tasty orange & almond cake dessert. Every table was full (the usual front cafe bit) & the atmosphere was goodish.:D

It had been a while since the family (6 adults) had been out for a meal so we tried the hungry monk on a Saturday night as I had not been before, we arrived at 8.30 for our dinner and once someone finally arrived at the reception area we were escorted to a nice table in the new section of the restaurant and that's where my positive comments end,
There was no bread or water on the table which I would see as par for the course in any fine dining establishment, the place was very busy and definitely under staffed which resulted in long delays waiting on drinks and the 3 hours it took to serve us up our meal.
The food itself was average at best but the overall dining experience was poor,I will not be in any hurry to return.

We were also there on Saturday - but earlier.
Welcome and friendliness of the staff was faultless - very fast service, friendly and good craic.

    Starters - were just amazing.
Main - average - actually disappointed as when I was last there the main was great, this time both my wife and I were not overly impressed. I love a good steak and can't help but always be critical. Wine to accompany was great - perfect temperature and nicely matched to the food.
Desserts - very nice, mine was a little over-powered by one ingredient but was still lovely. My wife loved hers too but found it hard going ;)

Overall - really enjoyed ourselves, good service, friendly staff, average to good food. Only issue I had was the temperature in the old section - I always find it a bit warm there but it is a small area with a low ceiling so little they can do about that.

Will we go back? Yup, we were intending to go there for a 40th but the mains have but me off I am afraid. Might have been just mine but my wife got a different main and was equally unimpressed. If we had time between now and the 40th would re-try just to be sure but not enough time now.

I was upstairs in the monk recently.I haven't been there in ages and I don't go downstairs. The menu was more extensive and the cooking was better than ever before. I believe the chef has a new kitchen and it shows.

    Hi.
I thought downstairs was more winebar/bistro/cafe type place and upstairs was the restaurant. If you are looking for a full restaurant service you should go upstairs, i dont think i would want a bread service before my burger :-)

Hadn't been to the Hungry Monk for ages but have been there twice in the last two weeks, both times booked for a celebration by someone else. It wouldn't have been my choice as I can't stand the management's arrogance there usually, but I thought it was only fair to give them a fresh chance so went along with an open mind.

I really thought in the current economic climate, restauranteurs in general try to give people a pleasant dining experience at fair prices and, even in a fine dining restaurant such as the Hungry Monk, would take account of the fact that customers cash is hard earned and that they resent being charged extra for sauces, etc when the menu is already expensive. On the first occasion our table wasn't ready at 9pm. We came back as requested at 9.20, were seated by friendly waiting staff and then forgotten about. We got starters at 10.15 and mains at 11 pm. By then we had lost our appetites! Fitting in two sittings for small groups without managing it properly is just plain greedy.

On the second occasion, as a party of eight, we were welcome to stay all evening but again, service was slow, one starter was forgotten and what was so annoying in retrospect, wine was constantly topped up, in a very sloppy fashion, and the bottles taken away each time to where you couldn't keep an eye on them. The over familiar owner made inappropriate "funny" sexist comments to two of the ladies in the party who just tried to ignore him - honestly we were a reasonably youngish group who enjoy a bit of banter but he's so OTT - who does he think he is? A very apologetic waitress cleared up the smithereens of the glass she broke accidentally while pouring wine, but then just poured more from our bottle into a spare glass on the time. The manager shoud have been over like a shot with a fresh glass of wine but no.....

Ok, I know this has been a complete rant, but I can't stand any service establishment dealing with the public ripping us off even further when they're so expensive already. When people go on and on about the Monk being so fabulous, I always think of the Emperors New Clothes.....no one will actually say its overpriced and treats people with arrogance

    Ok, I'll stop!

Thats why I was looking forward to eating there so much.I love no frills cooking with fresh local produce but i was underwhelmed on both occasions just didnt do it for me.maybe I had built it up too much after all the great reviews

I agree, heard so many good things about The Monk prior to moving to GS, very disappointed twice, particularly annoyed with being served too fast!! we were in an out in 40 minutes despite saying after first course (Which arrived 2 minutes after ordering) that we were in no hurry, out for the night etc. Reckon they needed the table back. Have to wonder how crab cakes could be cooked properly in 2 minutes??
