Garmin is ****ed. Its going back tomorrow hopefuly.
I have a nice 10 mile route measured with the garmin tha goes along the coast and ends in collins avenue near parnell park. Plan wasto run it and turn around on the spot and do 20. Had no real pace in mind but ~8 minmiles was a rough target. I knew the first 4 mile markers so i would press lap toget feel of the pace. Then press at 10 miles and get a time for the next 6 and average it. Do the same coming back and get splits for the last 4 to see how trong i was finishing.
    8.16
    8.22
    8.15
    7.48
Ignored the watch at this point and kept the pace of the 4th mile. I went 50 metres past where the 10 miles usually beeps for aguments sake.
5-10 came in @ 46.30, 7.45 average. Turned round int a bit of a headwind and i thought it slowed me down. I was deffo working harder and i thought i was slowing down. I pressed lap after the next 6 and it was 46.30 haha:D
The second 46.30 was deffo alot harder with a bit of a breeze. With the breeze out of my face i picked up the pace without knowing.
    Last 4 miles
    7.22
    7.34
    7.47
    7.18

7.48 average for the 20 miles and not feeling bad at the end.
    Great day for a run.

Have you contacted Garmin saying you want to get it fixed. They get back to you about a week later with an unique reference number and you send it to Southampton for repair. I got a brand new one in the post 6 days after i sent it off. Press them for a code if they dont get back to you, i'd still be waiting for mine if it wasnt for my insistence.

They were pretty quick to get back to me with an RMA code cause I said in the ticket I opened that I'd tried all the various reset options. You might save one email exchange if you put your address (where you want them to send it back to) & your phone number in the ticket when you open it.

Paid a visit to the post office at lunchtime to post my one off. Gas that they're all dying around this time, thankfully I've got three weeks 'til I'd really like to have it back.

went out to do 20 with the mate ken. Both our garmins were measuring every mile way short. We were running about 8.15-8.30 pace and it was registering as 9 min miles and over. Very very annoying. Must be a prob their side cause both our garmins were like yo-yos with the pace.
We sussed a course that we have done before and it should have been spot on 20. Wasnt even 19 when we got to the finish. We persevered until the garmin said 20 but it was kinda annoying.

    A few miles registering over 9 mins:eek:
I reckon we did just over 21 in the end.

There is no 'their side'. All the information received by your watch comes from US government satellites that orbit the earth. So unless the US government are plotting against you (have you done something to piss them off?!), then it's co-incidence that they were both reading wrong, or else you both didn't wait long enough for a good signal before starting, or else some of the US satellites were rebooted. :)

So, what's the goal for Connemara?

I think its going to be abou 5.40, i think thats managable. Dont wanna set the sights to high and fall apart. Should get to 26.2 in fairly good nick at that pace or maybe those words will be on my gravestone:D

You're getting a thirst for the Ultras now!

Best advise is to get this one out of the way first and see how you feel about pushing it up to 100k.

I'll be lashing into the training for this as soon as Conn is over, using the pacing as a way of keeping the LSRs up but I'll be looking at trying out a run/walk strategy to keep me moving for the whole thing. Plan at the moment is Run 5M, Walk 1M, repeat nine times. ;) But I'll have to start working it into long training runs to see how it feels.

If you plan to run for the whole 100k, you might need to talk to the likes of woundedknee to give you better pointers. Better still, there'll be a heap of people to ask at the start line on Sunday.

I always intend to run all te way but maybe 100k isa bit 2 far.
I dont intend on taking any deliberate walking breaks but i will take small breaks at the aid stations for nutrition. Maybe 1 min at a time. I sont know what a good goal time for 100k would be for me. Is 10 hours quick for 100k?

Oisin, have you target times for the half marathon splits or are you going to run by "feel" on the day and take whatever comes?

This kind of warm, humid weather, if it persists, will make for a very enjoyable run but will have challenges if you are going for a fast time. It's easy to mis-calculate how much fluid to take on - either too much or too little will give trouble. Don't forgot to have some kind of electrolyte in the drop pack if its very humid.

Really looking forward to the race reports, particularly for the ultras.

Was thinking 1.52, 1.52 and as 1.55 maybe. I know ill lose a bit n the couple of big climbs in he last third but keeping the pce down to 8.30 for the first 26.2 miles i should have something left in the tank for the last third. If i get those splits it should bringme in at 5.39.
Ill be carrying 8 gels with me and dropping off some energy drink and a bite to eat(mars bar or pancake) at 3 of the later drop stations. Its a cae of suck it and see tobe honest but im confident:D

Have a look at the split pattern for last year of the finishers
    http://www.connemarathon.com/results

What you are planning is possible if you are running very comfortably within yourself for the first 26 miles, but very few managed such an even split pattern last year. Hills, injury, accumulated muscle damage, congestion from the half marathon runners, dehydration all make it very difficult to maintain the same pace in the final third of the race as is possible earlier.

Yeah i agree. There is an unknown element. I ran a 50k in january in prep for this on a very undualating course and maintained the same pace to the end which was 8 min miles so i know i can go 30+ and maintain a pace. The 30 secs slowdown should hopefully enable me to be stronger than i felt in january. I totally agree its going to be very very hard but i think ive prepared well and its time to see what i can do:D
