I got an email from UCD the other day about registration. Just confirms most of whats been put here already, fees etc and info about student cards. September 2nd. Hoping for some sample course outlines though before i pick them yet though. I know some of last years ones are up but most have little info.

If anything an idea on what ill be shelling out for books would be most useful.
I'm in the same situation! Would really like to find out more about the course itself and orientation.

You can search all the modules on offer here:
    http://www.ucd.ie/students/course_search.htm

Remember to search for the modules from level 4.

Thanks. I know about the modules, I was more talking about when and where they want us, any advice about how to space out our modules, etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 231 ✭✭saraocallaghan

Personally, I would try and either load them equally over the two semesters or try and go heavy with semester 1. I ended up going with more modules in semester 2 and I found it tough going with a lot of group projects and the easter break, spent a lot of late nights in the library trying to sort everything out and get my assignments in on time in semester 2. But that's just my experience.

Also, if you want any advice on what modules to take etc etc, feel free to PM me. The joys of being nearly finished!

Motion seconded. I had a lower credit load in the second semester, and still found it a lot harder. There was something different to the pacing of a lot of the modules as well, with a heavy focus on a couple of large assignments, whereas semester one seemed to be a constant workflow that ended with a fairly manageable final assignment/exams at Christmas...

I've tried to space my choices out so I've nearly an equal amount of modules in both semesters. My choices that I want are:
    Web Publishing,
    The Teaching Librarian,
    Management for Information Professionals,
    Creating and Publishing Digital Media,
    Archives Sustainability and Presentation Management.

I think this is a good mix, though I wish I had a few spare credits to pick another archives based module. If anyone is selling books related to these modules or knows someone selling I would be really interested!

The Teaching Librarian is great fun, the solo project is stressful enough but nothing too bad and Claire McG is a very ethusiastic and lovely lecturer, very much into group work again but it's fun.

Management for Teaching Prof. I enjoyed it, but I'm in a minority as far as I can tell from talking to my fellow classmates. You don't get taught a whole pile about management but there is huge bias towards learning how to work in groups, and knowing the way SILS is going it's a huge help and you do a big final group project. I think the lecturer is changing due to maternity leave and I've heard rumours of who the new lecturer could be so I can't say what they'll be like.

Web Publishing is just basic HTML. Nothing too bad, if Judith is taking it again, it's very step by step and logical. Attend EVERY CLASS and EVERY TUTORIAL (even the online ones. Get them in on time, and as soon as possible after the lecture as it's all fresh and lovely in your head, if she's doing it that way this year). She takes attendence and it does go toward your final grade.

The archival modules are new, we didn't get the option of them last year and needless to say we weren't impressed. So hopefully they're of use to you!

No one really bought books. Everything you could need is online and in the library. But you find find someone who bought them.

Hope that helps and any other questions feel free to ask!

I'm looking at doing a bit more in the first semester I think, but I'm also considering how each are assessed. After being told by members of staff that they would be reigning in the group work in modules i expected more with individual essays/projects.

Have 2 definites I want to do, one being an archival one.

I can't decide which management one to do either as they appear to be the 4 least interesting of the lot.

Either way I know mondays will be long as judging by my choices ill be in from 9-6 it seems for one semester!

Who have you spoken to in regards to group work? Was it someone in SILS? As far as I was aware they are continuing with the level of group work. This year and going forward they are focusing more on group work instead of individual thesis for the summer.

Do you mind me asking where you saw the timetable? I'd love to know class times, thought we had to wait for registration to find out.

Sorry if this has already been asked/answered somewhere, this is a massive thread!

and the planned times for certain classes are available here https://sisweb.ucd.ie/usis/w_sm_web_inf_simple_viewer.show_programme?p_code=mthsc008. In the 'when is this module offered' button. The info is only given for some of them though.
    Ah thanks a million!

Hey guys.....a prospective student here of MLIS for next year. I'm just really interested in Library Studies and maybe following on after and doing Archives management.

I'll be doing the MLIS part time though. Can anyone explain in more detail what it's like in terms of the assignments and that?! Is there a lot of fieldwork say? I'm working a 4 day weeks so I'm trying tp figure out how it'll be for when and if i do start.

    Any help would be welcome!

Well it really depends on what electives you're doing. And, I don't know if you know this, but UCD don't offer night courses on this. You will be taking classes at the same time as the full time students, just spread out of the two years. I know for Research Methods 2, we had field work but it was at night. But the group project could change having said that. Assignments. Again, it depends on the electives you pick. The majority of stuff is due at the end of the semester. Some lecturers do continuous assessment but it's mostly group projects with presentations and reports due at the end of the semester.

I planned to do the masters part time myself but bit the bullet and did it full time. It wouldn't have suited me to do it part time.

What kind of hours are you working? Is your employer flexible?

Thanks for that sara, and i didn't know what the timetable was like. I emailed for them to send a breakdown of classes etc. to see if I'm able to do it around work.

My employers are flexible enough but i guess it all depends on how many classes a week are on. Do you know how many there would be part time? Full time is just not an option for me im afraid.

So i guess the more individually based modules would work better for me. the ones with the least group work. as part time and my job would make it hard for group assignments. what modules do you think would cater to that mostly?

im still looking into it. Havent properly decided but i wont be applying until next year anyway. i just want to make sure i have all the information before jumping in!! this is a great thread by the way!

    Hey Celestica,

It's absolutely no problem, I'm happy to help, I know I was fretting this time last year wondering if I was wise in the head!!

This year I don't think there were too many doing it part time. I know of two.

I don't know if there are many individual based modules, the only ones that I can think of are Web Publishing (which I did) and Children's Literature (I know of because friends did it). All the other ones that I did had big elements of group work. A lot of it can be done over the internet (as I can attest to, as I have done the majority of my Capstone with my group via skype and email!!) I'm sure whatever groups you're part of will be willing to work around you (I know we did for people who had trains/buses/children to pick up) but group work is a huge element of the UCD course.

I guess the best thing to do would be to get in contact with Claire Nolan in the office and ask her if she can send you on a copy of this year's timetable and you could look at it and possibly work it around so that you have your modules on two full days or two and a half a week. I don't know how feasible this would be but it's a suggestion so that you maximise your time out on campus.

With regards to modules I think you end up doing around 9 over the whole course. Four core modules and five electives, at least that's what I did this year.

If you need anymore help, let me know.

Is anyone else having problems registering for the lab/tutorial for Info & Reference Services? The module seems to be conflicting with itself? Or else I am reading the timetable all wrong!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10 eepha

    You're able to register?

Damn. I'm doing MLIS too but I can't get in. Looks like I'll be spending some time with the Student Desk today :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭the west wing

Yeah I've been able to register for the last half hour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9 The White Queen

I have also been able to register, but have the same problem as the west wing with Info & Reference Services.
I wanted to choose Prof Issues in Info&LibCareers as management module, but it says 'Prerequisite and Test Score error' when I try to register for it :(
The rest worked out fine, thought I would have more problems...

I've fired off an email to Claire to see if she can shed any light on the Info & References Services question. Maybe you should email her about Prof Issues and see what the story is?

I think the problem with Prof Issues is related to the one with Info & References because you have to take Info & References to be allowed to take Prof Issues. I mailed Claire, but I'm not too worried about it. (I have a feeling not caring too much is the only way you can survive UCD administration ;))

Just looking at the Info and Reference Services, weeks 1-3 are in 1 room, week 4 is in another, so maybe the practical is in a different room again for the remainder of the semester and the system just isn't able to acknowledge that.

    I got a reply from Claire -

    Hi

Everyone has had some difficulty with this module; please register for the lecture and try for the module on Monday afternoon, it should be straightened out by then.

    Many thanks

    Claire

However I can't see the module on Monday so I'm just going to leave it until our orientation meeting.

I am trying to choose my modules for the Graduate Diploma in Information and Library Studies but I am also having the same issue with the Info & Ref module. As a result I cannot fully complete my online module registration and am concerned that I may loose my chosen places over the weekend.:(

You won't lose any places if it is a fault in the system.

Anyone else being asked for a PIN and a new security question when they try to log on to SISWeb to register? I've tried a few things but each time I get PIN not valid - doesn't seem to be student number or the PIN from the online application system.
