you can see that the bus is light on it's suspension on the left side and has probably just gone past it's tipping point with the chains holding it. So it has tipped further than the platform

Ahh, that's it alright. Couldn't see the difference while viewing the pic on my phone, much clearer on the PC.

They're not scales. They're measuring tilt angles.

The platform is tilted a just under 30 degrees and the bus is tilted at about 35 degrees.

Surely they all just belong in the 'cool pictures' thread - not world-shaking really.

Arguably the most disturbing one of them all is the photo of John Lennon. He is signing an autograph for a "fan".

That fan is Mark David Chapman. The man who would, a short time later, shoot and kill Lennon.

Not fake. Rumoured at the time alright but proven real.

That one of Steve Jobs is very disturbing. Pancreatic cancer is definitely the worst cancer to get. It really sucks the life out of the person.

That one of Bobby Kennedy is pretty grim

This was taken as Lyndon Johnson was sworn into office after JFK was shot earlier that day, Jackie Kennedy is standing beside him wearing the same pink coat she had on as her husband was shot beside her less than 3hrs earlier. She still has his blood on it.

The Rolling Stones hire the Hell Angels biker gang to provide security at the 1969 Altamont Music Festival in California. They are reportedly paid just $500 in beer. 400,000 attend the free concert, well over the expectations of the organisers. The concert goers are off their faces on LSD and the bikers are pissed drunk.

The Hell Angels beat back the crowd with pool cues and motorbike chains:

One concert goer, Meredith Hunter, pulls a gun on the bikers (see in front of the girls dress):

A biker launches in and stabs Hunter to death:

Otherwise known as the Door to Hell and the Derweze gas crater, the crater is found in Turkmenistan and is 60 metres wide and 20 metres deep. The hole was created when a Soviet drilling rig accidentally tapped into a massive underground natural gas cavern, causing the ground to collapse and the drilling rig to fall in.

To prevent poisonous fumes from escaping into the atmosphere, the Soviet geologists decided to set the pit on fire, hoping the fire would use up its fuel in a few days. It has been burning since 1971.

A woman giving birth on the lawn outside a health centre in Mexico having been refused treatment.

Pregnant Irma Lopez, 29, and her husband - both ethnic Mazatec - walked October 2 to clinic in Oaxaca, but were turned away by nurses
Photo of grimacing Lopez kneeling on patch of grass outside clinic with her newborn son still attached by umbilical cord set off firestorm online
Clinic director Dr Adrian Cruz was suspended pending state and federal investigations
Nurses at health clinic blamed 'misunderstanding' on language barrier and being short-staffed
Mayor of town where clinic is located said in July another woman gave birth on the lawn

    How awful :(
The byline roughly translates as "She arrived with intense pain at the San Filipe Jalapa de Díaz health centre, but was refused/denied. CNDH and the government are already investigating and the mayor(ess) maintains that there have been two cases there in less than 3 months".

Something's not right here: Surgeons stare in awe at Julia Popova, 22, who has a six-inch kitchen knife protruding from her back that she did not know was there
    ...
It is believed that Julia spent ten days in the hospital after the operation. 'She had a straightforward recovery,' the surgeon said - suffering no long-term effects from the horrific attack.
