Some people are so rude. Get over yourself Jev/n. Must you be so condescending to people? It's giving lawyers a bad name. Obviously if they got the interview they've been on the website, so don't be so rude and either offer help or say nothing at all!

I was in no way patronising the previous posters who asked for some help; I don't know where you got that from? I would see myself as being quite helpful in this forum so please drop the attitude, there is no need for me to "get over myself". I have interviews coming up but I don't see the point in adding to the list of those looking for help, seen as it does not seem to be forthcoming...

It does get a bit tedious, however, when users are on here every day asking for what MOP, A&L, Frys, ODSE etc. will ask in the interviews and exclaiming that they've no idea what to expect! There are only a few avenues an interviewer can take in these situations:

    1. Basic personal and academic details.
    2. Employment, skills, interests and hobbies
    3. Commercial awareness questions
    4. Firm related questions - culture, ethos etc.

The first three of these can be easily dealt with alone or with the help of a friend and I would assume anyone who has made the interview stage would know this. The forth, as I mentioned previously, can only really be tackled by looking on their website and in the press.

Ok fair enough, I don't come on here very often so I don't know how often those same questions are asked. But it does seem that everytime I come on this forum, it (not you) seems to be so negative, people derisively pointing out other people's spelling mistakes or making snide comments. Chill out everyone!

Get off jev/n's back... dont apply for a firm if you havent a clue what they do. Its going to be kind of hard to convince them that you should get the job if you dont have interest or knowledge in the area of law that they specialise. But its only ODSE... shouldnt be too hard to get the job anyway.

1+2+3+4 = pretty much everything really. So that breakdown isnt really all that helpful.

What people seem to be asking here is whether there is any particular type of question/angle/style that different firms ask. And that is a very good question. Given that boards is a resource where you can get feedback from current or previous interviewees, and possibly from current employees of certain firms, asking that question on here is a very good sign of initiative. Knowing the style of interviews is far more important than being able to reel of some statistic that Firm X won Firm of the year in 2007 or some other stuff that is on the homepage of their website.

I've seen plenty of people be told one thing by past interviewees etc. and when they are interviewed the approach is completely different - generally it depends on the interviewer, not the firm.

    Bit of both.
Every pair of interviewers will bring their own personality to the table, for sure, but there is usually a 'firm culture' in terms of the way they manage interviews. The interviewers will meet beforehand and try and ensure (so far as is practicable) a relatively uniform manner of approaching the interviews.

But either way, asking a question on Boards or any other forum where candidates/former candidates are likely to gather is a very good thing. You are likely to get responses from those who have gone through the process before, perhaps even yesterday, and perhaps even with the same interviewer you end up with.

So, as I said, asking a question here shows more initiative and savvy than browsing a website (although, no doubt, anyone who doesnt browse the website before walking into an interview is destined for failure).

Oh no I agree completely... it just irks me when the people just add the same questions to a thread when none have been answered yet

In the interest of fairness though, maybe the people who have added their queries to the list got were successful in getting info but via PMs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 483 ✭✭legal eagle 1

I think if you look on some of the other threads you will see that after several queries, some people did reply to the queries both on the thread itself as well as by pm.
These forums are for asking questions, seeking advice and talking to others in similar situations!!

Law's an awful stuck in the mud profession. I'm glad im an accountant, adding value to my clients business and not over charging them for occasional paper pushing.

So does anyone know if they address questions to individual people or do they just let whoever speaks first answer? Also how many people are usually in the group? Any info much appreciated.

Hey OP, if it AC, then there will be 10 people in each group. Good luck.

Have in your head who you would like to have to dinner alive or dead - favourite song - soundtrack to your life etc really silly questions but can so easily throw people. Then they ask topical things. You have to 'flirt' with them. Sounds mad but they look for bubbly as well as articulate....that is the feedback the gave to lots of people anyway!

In all the years I have known them never associated "bubbly" with A Cox or indeed with any of the big five. However good luck.

They are three random questions, ranging from who would you go to dinner with, to who is your favourite singer?

Just say what you need to say, don't get overly hung up on anything.

Say enough to get your point across.

    Oh and best of luck!

I completely agree with your replies.....

You haven't met the right intake then - we're very bubbly :)

And the intro questions for Arthur Cox really are to be taken at face value - there's no "right" or "corporate value" answer they're looking for. They just want you to relax and put you at ease with an "easy" question anyone can say something for.

There'll be current intake trainees welcoming you prior to the interviews. We'll see you over the next few days!

When I rang to tell them the day I wanted to interview they didn't mention a confirmation text closer to the time... slightly confused!
