if you had to be born either deaf or blind which one would you choose?
any mods wanna add a poll too?:o
i'd pick deaf. i think life would be so much harder being blind. granted u'd miss out on listening to music etc but nonetheless, visual impairment would be pretty bad

Which would you prefer? 49 votes

definately blind. at least you can still easily have a conversation with someone if you are blind.

Deaf. Seeing is far more important and can lead to a much more comfortable life. Sports are still playable when one is deaf

    no more After Hours,though.
    i'll choose deaf.

Blind is possibly the worst afliction a human can be given.
Deaf is also very tough, but blind is far tougher I would imagine

i just think that one would feel much more lonely when deaf rather than blind.?

I'd definitely prefer to be deaf. You are a lot more limited at what you can do when blind.

Deaf, id prefer to be able to control it though with an on off switch. When you get a pain in your hole listening to people, flick the deaf switch for peaceful deaf bliss, then you can smile happily.

thats one thing.think of how many things youll miss if ya were blind. then youll realise how much more ya can do when youre deaf.

Neither but the way I figure is blindness is more likely to affect your independance than deafness.

I really don't know. I absolutely love music, and it affects my moods and how happy I feel. I work as a DJ and when I watched the film its All Gone Pete Tong, i felt terrible at the part where he goes deaf. I sometimes have bad ear blockages due to volume, and I hate the feeling of disconnectedness from everyone and everything around you. Being blind would restrict me in what I can do a lot more, but I dont think Id feel quite as isolated, as (in my opinion) most deaf people are somewhat cut off from those who arent deaf, while this doesnt apply to blind people to the sameextent.

I genuinely think Id rather be blind. Imagine a life of silence, unable to hear anything or unable to connect with your surroundings or people. I dont think being blind is quite as depressing an idea.

    Deaf ffs.

Horrible, horrible situation for anybody to be in.
Feel terrible for anybody that is afflicted by blindness.

I hope that sometime in the future a bionic eye can
be implemented in humans with a decent resolution.

As said above, the deafness thing gives you some
leeway with social pressures. Kind of like where Autistic
people don't care for conforming to silly human conventions.

*EDIT* crap, I actually meant to hit the deaf option...>_<

Not at all true. I did volunteer work in the NCBI last year. The National Council For The Blind Of Ireland in case people don't know and they encourage people to be independent.

They have cane training, guide dog training, daily living skills classes.

There was a guy in there who is both deaf and blind who makes his way in and out of the NCBI every day from Sandymount.

i manage very well.as i said imagine all the things you wouldnt be able to do if you were blind.youll lose a lot more of your independence.i can hear with the help of my hearing aids.dont feel isolated at all.

I really like reading about these types of stories:)

Some vision loss is apparent in my right eye, but no
big deal in comparison to blindness. I really feel for blind people.

Besides, with screen readers and such for computers, braile
and other techniques, blind people can be quite independent.

Thats daft. Your not independent your relying on a guide dog. Your independent with the aid of an animal. Furthermore you are dependent on a stick to guide you. While you live an indepent life you are depandent in many ways.

If your deaf you can move about freely you just need to look around carefully

I think he means blind people can function within society with
some assistance. Alot of people rely on medical crutches.

Someone that has diabetes still has to assist their blood suger
levels with insulin injections. This does not affect their independence.

It's still being independent whatever way you look at it.

People depend on their legs to walk. For those that can't walk rely on a wheelchair. They're still being independent regardless of what they use to get them from A to B.

Being half blind myself it's mostly down to confidence and some blind/visually impaired people find it daunting to go out and do things on their own. It takes a lot of time for a visually impaired person to become independent and honestly your post I've quoted pissed me off a little. I've seen people come from being nervous wrecks to becoming so confident and being able to go around places by themselves.

To say that it's daft is an insult to those people who have worked so hard to become independent.

See your now taking it personel and stuck in tunnel vision. You honestly think that a blid person can manage as well as a deaf person your just being stubborn.

Let me give you a classic example. Your walking down the road with skippy the dog and some little boll1x starts fireing rocks at you both. You cannot dodge the rocks and skippy has not the sense to make you run away from the rocks.

Where as your deaf and walking down the road. First of all you cannot see the little feckers so you will not notice the stones until they start landing beside you. At this point you can run like hell dodge the stones and stop to let the cyclist pass before you cross the road.

Is my point any clearer! I would rather be deaf if i really had to choose.

2nd point..... New baby born. Lovely 10lb 5 1/2" oz. Granted if I am deaf i would not be able to hear him but what would affect me more. not being able to hear him of see him
