wow , a blast from the past, my dad drove for CIE , in around Galway city and county in the 70's and early 80s, if he had the Galway to Eyrecourt run, he'd collect my brothers and myself on the way back in the evening and bring us to the depot where we could run amok for awhile:D:
We used to get the odd spin to Limerick on a Sunday on an Expressway like this

Jaysus they're KR class GAC's. I thought they were all gone. I was a bus nut as a kid and actualy wrote to FFG in Germany looking for development information on the KD/KE/KR class of buses. Much to my suprise ( after sending the hand written letter in English aged 11 ) I got a response. They sent me back technical drawings, photos of early prototype tests in Germany ( that went on to be KD1 painted yellow at the time and KE1) and some lovely pictures of the first KR parked with Merc trolley buses and the like in Germany. Im sorry to say that most of the pictures were lost in a move to Austria many years back. Must have a sniff in the attic to see if any are left. Great pics OP, thanks a lot.

This really is great stuff, thanks!

I see in one of the photos there is a withdrawn learner driver Bombardier. Surely it can't have been in service as a learner up until that recently?

Bloody shame to see good buses with lots of life in them yet being sold to the UK. Someone in CIE hasnt figured out that the Celtic Tiger is over. I just dont understand why 10 year old buses are being axed. Crazy IMO.

I think the fact that Dublin Bus are reducing a lot of their fleet as a cost-saving measure is contributing to their early withdrawal. In recent years they brought in a policy of withdrawing them after twelve years, from what I read.

I would have imagined it would have been scrapped or cannibalized for parts by now. fair play for them for not having it back on the road after that.

Are you aware of the Kells Transport Musem in Cork? They have loads of KCs and a few KRs and KDs. The museum is a pretty controversial operation!

Think the majority of these are up in Broadstone depot, the tour buses and trainers are still in use as far as i know

Two of the tour buses are up for ssale as per the advert above

The training buses have been parked there a while now and 2 others are mixed in with the for sale bunch so I would imagine that they are also up for sale.

All the RV buses (99 models) will be retiring soon so maybe new trainers will be on the way in the form of av models

    why is it controversial?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,513 ✭✭✭BrianD3

    why is it controversial?
It has been described as a scrapyard waiting to happen. With the "museum" consisting of hundreds of buses stored outside and various states of (dis)repair, it is easy to see where this idea comes from. The owner of the museum is also a well known eccentric who has had numerous run ins with various parties - the County Council, Cork Airport, Readymix, the ESB, Bus Eireann and possibly with other bus preservation enthusiasts too..

These buses were ran up until the mid 90's in Dublin. They used to be on the 22 route. Anybody know anything about this particular type of bus?

    And just an after thought

The Atlanteans are by far my favorite bus

Molly 1 DF450/450 ZD which was the first Ghost tour bus is still to be officaly retired.
After entering service in 1972 it is the oldest serving bus in the country and after its life serving many routes was converted into an open top tour bus and then re-roofed giving it the distintion of being the only bus to have this job done

Pic taken from flickr as I hope to get to Ringsend to get a pic of molly for my own collection

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 834 ✭✭✭Blue Punto

Just another note on the pics on the first page I have the buses tagged as RA's when that are actually RH's

And I heard that the airlink AV118 in the same batch of pics was to become a new ghost tour bus but that now seems unlikely with a for sale sign on her

I heard it was a very unreliable machine so maybe that had something to do with it

just as an aside I was surprised the other day to come across two Dublin Bus 'deckers on the M25 north of London...possibly heading for ensignbus would you think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 834 ✭✭✭Blue Punto

yeah alot of them end up in the uk and the funny thing is ,2 or 3 have then been re-imported back into the country by operators here

No its not a bombardier just a trick of the light if you look closely you will see its the same as the rest

    The KD's are in Broadstone

And I do have a pic of the bus from the accident but I decided against leaving it on the board incase it offended anyone

The KR's up the bank in Broadstone are subject to a court case with Kells Transport Museum. See Here. Bus Eireann would rather scrap them then sell them to KTM (and other preservationalists like myself).

Especially since they're the last buses to be built by CIÉ (CIÉ had to finish the last batch of KR's as GAC staff downed tools), they're the last buses to be built in the Republic, and they're the last purpose built buses for CIÉ. There's only one in preservation so far :(

Built in Shannon in an old Piano factory. Politics put an end to it all unfortunately.

A mate of mine on the BL classics forum bought 4 buses in the UK fairly cheaply.

Two of them, Nationals were subsequently scrapped, but he bought them, brim full of diesel, for 50 quid STG each.
