Societies in DCU

Hey, I am just wondering what people think of the societies at DCU? From my experience in other colleges most societies were pretty crap and you never really heard anything back from them after joining.

I am really just looking to join a good music society and hopefully an outdoor activities society like rafting or rock climbing. Can anybody comment on these societies at DCU and if they are any good?
    Thanks

I've been told I have to join RedBrick (which I would have done anyway I suppose)...
From what I've seen it looks pretty active, thought it's mostly just CA and EC students.

Music society looks really good in terms of the facilities available but whether they do group sections or what not i have no idea.

Clubs and Societies are wonderful, you should join as many as you can.

Most of them hold weekly events, the only problem being that sometimes two or even three things you may want to go to are on at the same time.

But yeah, there are two Clubs & Socs days a week or two into semester one where most of them set up stands and stuff, you get a better idea of what they're like from there.

Haha. I think I'll join as many as the aul' bank card will let me! I'm hoping to join the Art Society because apparently they hold workshops in sketching/painting and all that jazz.

I definately wanna join the Art Society, they have a trip to Italy as well I think. Also some kind of "a painting for a drink" thing, which sounds very interesting! :p

The other one I'm keen to join is the Books one, simply cause I love reading!

Sounds like a blast! I can paint pictures of drinks for real drinks... Hah.

I'm deffo joining the Book one. I was thinking of the Debating society but I could just imagine myself going crazy and gunning someone down...

Sounds like you'll fit in nicely - I am a life member of Debate Soc [my punishment for heading the society years ago] and I'd recommend it. Unlike many other universities, they don't take it too seriously...

Heh, look forward to seeing you on clubs and socs days!

To answer the op : Music soc are very active. There's Surf and Sail and loads of other outdoorsy clubs so you'll definitely find something to your tastes.

There's clubs for pretty much everything from Gamessoc(board games, console games, pc games etc...), Art Soc, Dance Soc, Drama and loads more. They're a great way to get to know people and many of them have trips and events on all the time so you're guaranteed an active social life if you get involved.

Does anyone have the list of sport societies? Particularly looking for a Rugby League one.

    Societies
    Clubs
Both lists are probably a bit out of date, but somewhat accurate.

Generation Yes has just started up a new society which isn't on that list. If you're on Facebook you can just search for the Generation Yes DCU group which will give the info. ;)

I saw some BookSoc hopefuls there. And I was appropriately thrilled. As this year's Chairperson, I highly recommend it! It was my first society, loved it since my the first meeting.

And as Art's PRO, I can tell ya'll that this year will be EPIC. Good times will be had, comrades.

I will now stop pimping off the ones I have a position in, and tell you that ALL the Clubs and Socs rock.

One word of advice, don't join 28 on your first day and go to 3. They're fairly cheap to join, but it adds up.Unless you're loaded. In which case, go nuts!

Save the enticing sentences and the like for when the semester actually begins. :P

Although I am disappointed in you two, train and lotta, for the distinct lack of Games Soc pimping :(

well you don't wanna be going around the forums blowing about how awesome your own soc is.

gamesoc won best society last year though :D, doesn't need pimping

Join as many as you think you'll be able to go to. I joined around 8 last year, I ended up only being active in four.
It's only four euro, give a few of them a go anyway (PARTICULARLY STRANGE THINGS AND MODEL UNITED NATIONS). :p

Unfortunately there's no Rugby League team, compadre.
I suggest you join the Rugby (Union) team and I'd say you'd get people in there who want to play. Either there or in the DCU Saints American Football team.
If anyone has any queries about DCU sports clubs they're more than welcome to PM me

PokerSoc is savage. Best value weekly game in town.

Come to think of it, can alumni join? Wouldn't mind a game the odd week.

If I join Strange things, will I be the only girl?

also anyone care if I join Games soc when I don't actually own a console ( I do play other peoples xbox occasionally).

Carri brought i back from the dead last year and she is a girl so she is in it anyway.

I joined game soc and only had a wii so anything is possible.
Gamesoc have the equipment for the games all you have to do is join and show up and you wont be the only girl in gamesoc either.

Speaking as the events officer, last year we had loads of girls in Strange Things. At present the Chair and Treasurer are girls, so you definitely won't be alone.

We were founded on this very forum, exactly a year ago...

Redbrick is really amazing, online storage, photo storage, chat, and webspace too. Plus the members are (with one or two exceptions :P) really friendly and nice :P

And just throwing it out there, but For any Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual or Transgender folk, the DCULGBT are hoping to bring the soc back from near death this year. (Apparently people didn't know it existed) We'll be noticable on Clubs and Socs day and we're really friendly and approachable folk. ^_^

Hope to see you all soon =D

I wanna join Drama since I found out there's backstage stuff to be done, Media Production, Film and maybe Style and Publications if I've time :pac:

I'm looking forward to joining socs, hopefully they'll be a good laugh and I won't be all nervous!

Mostly we read books. Shocking, I know. It tends to be a bimonthly thing. We get a book in for everyone, at a discount, and we all read it over 2 weeks. Then we get together, chat about what we all thought of it, have a nice cup of tea and some other goodies, then do it all over again.
That's the basics. We also do stuff like the Book Bun-anza, a mix between a bake sale and selling books. Then the trips, which are epic. If I ever manage to upload my videos you'll see... Well, a 15 minute monologue as we wander Prague. But it's mildly interesting.

Now that I'm Chair, I'm not really happy to just be a caretaker, so I intend to add a good deal of new stuff too, and try to add more active stuff to our roster. Should be a fun year.

This is a LONG post now... Sure if ya want more info, I'll be at the table at Clubs & Socs day. And if I'm not, someone else will be, they'll clarify everything.

Thank you! The book reading part I knew but I was just wondering what other kind of things were part of the society, so thanks muchlies for the info! :D

Yeah, the Entrepreneurial and Social Society.

They do an Iron Stomach competition aswell. If you're in anyway squeamish or have just eaten, you might be better off not watching this clip.

Might sound a bit like a crazy person here, but there wouldn't be any Pagan/Wiccan folk in DCU looking for some kind of society based around the theme? Even UCD has a Pagan Society!

Just thought I'd throw it out there. I'd certainly be up for it :)

I second what Urizen said, Art Soc is going to be epic this year(we'll be around most of orientation week! You'll see us, it will be hard to miss us!)

I'd Recommend Gamessoc aswell, Great way to spend a wednesday afternoon playing rockband & super smash bros.:)

There's 3 Pagans in DCU that I know of, including myself. And we're all different paths. I doubt there'd be a significant influx this year that would justify starting a society. Then we have the problem of the vast amount of posers and idiots the concept attracts. But that's a conversation for the Paganism forum...

However, if you want to meet up me or any of the others some time, PM me here. Ya never know, we may have a few hiding in the woodwork, we might have the makings of a society. And I'm curious now myself as to how many there actually are floating around.

And UCD having one is in NO way an incentive, comrade...

Yeah DCU didn't really strike me as a very Pagan-like place. Who knows maybe if I lit a bonfire and got some people dance naked around it, might attract some attention..? :P

Personally I think idiots and posers should be welcomed with open arms. Some of them could surely be helped properly on their spiritual path.

I mentioned nothing of the sort, there's a difference between guiding and indoctrination.

For ArtSoc peeps, how often do the Art Society hold their workshops/classes?
