I'm thinking about putting in my first order with shaving.ie.

I picked up a cheap brush and Taylor of Old Bond Street Jermyn cream to give it a try, and now obviously I want a better brush, ha.

Are the Silvertip Special brushes on the website worth it? And are the three of them pretty much the same brush with a different handle design?

Also, what's the difference between an Alum block/stick and a styptic pencil?

First thing, when he ask for a decent set did he have a safety razor in mind?
Because safety razors are different from cartridge razors like the Gillette Mach3. Safety razors will have a small learning curve. This video explains it a bit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufG1dPmVo8Q&list=PL2DB6D82F52BA7608&index=6

If he did have a safety razor in mind and your budget is 100 euro then I recommend building your own set
The Merkur 34c would be a good razor to go with.
If he wants to stick with his gel then he doesn't need a brush but, if you want to get him one of the better creams or soaps from shaving .ie then you need to get him a brush too, I recommend this one http://www.shaving.ie/products/black-silvertip-special-iii.html
I'd recommend a cream like one from Taylors of Old Bond street. This one is nice, http://www.shaving.ie/products/taylor-of-old-bond-st-grapefruit-shaving-cream-bowl.html
You'll need the blades so, get a blade sampler,http://www.shaving.ie/products/50-blade-premium-selection-sampler.html
You could top it off with a good aftershave.
I'd also recommend getting a Styptic Pencil just incase, http://www.shaving.ie/products/styptic-pencil.html

Thank you so much Uncle Sam,

I am not sure if he is thinking of a safety razor to be honest I am not sure if he really knows much about them or in fact any kind of razor. He used to use a Dry Electric Shaver for years and moved to the Mack type ones a few years ago as he felt the Dry Electric Shaver was tugging his beard and making his face very sore. He is now very unhappy with the Mack type and just said he wanted a good shaving set for Christmas. He beard is very heavy.

What other options do I have?

I love the stuff and I don't say that lightly considering I'm a big fan of Proraso. I read once that someone said Mitchell's was tricky to work into a lather, well I find the opposite, I face lather it and it's always been excellent to lather within a minute or two.

They all have the same hair specs, just in a different handle. They look to be decent value. I had a very quick look online and I can't find another 22mm silvertip brush for a similar price.

A safety razor sounds ideal for him but, just make him aware that he has to go at it differently then he is use to with the Mach3. When I get home tonight I'll link a good beginners video on shaving with a safety razor.

Alum is great for small weepers. Styptic is when you get a bad cut. I've never needed to use my styptic pencil but they're cheap and handy to have just in case. My alum block has been used a lot.

Michaels can be tricky to lather for people living in hard water area's. If you like MWF then take a look at Tikibar shaving soaps. Her soaps are the same only with a lot of great smells.

Regarding the brushed.. It entirely depends on what you are looking for/at. Yes there is a difference in the different kinds.

Alum blocks I find are best for sealing pores whetted the styptic pencil is for dealing with "nicks. I use the Alum block as a matter of course following every shave. I find it seals the pores and ultimately to a better finish. I love used styptic pencil years ago to seal a nick

My wife bought me one of these for Xmas, along with several smaller items such as shaving brush, lavender shaving cream, styptic pen and bloc d'alun.

Very nice razor to be honest - well crafted, nice weight. I've never used a safety razor before, and have only ever used Mach 3 / Fusion style cartridge blades.

I was a bit apprehensive about using the single blade - was afraid that i'd maul my face with the safety razor. However, I found it easy to use (the Muhle kinda assists you in placing the blade at the right angle for a pass, with the curve on the top), and only had some minor cuts at the end (which the styptic stopped instantly).

Have to say also, i find that this razor gives a very close shave. I used it first xmas day, with about 4 weeks worth of growth on my face, and it took all off, absolutely no problem (obviously the razor needed quite a lot of flushing!)

Dunno what's in it but I'm getting incredibly close shaves with it.Still baby smooth by evening.

Has anyone any experience of the merkur 39c slant razor.?
I've been using a 34c for 18 months and looking for a change but don't know if it's too adventurous.

    Happy New Year Chris,

Is there any chance in stocking some of the American artisan soaps like Tiki Bar, Caties Bubbles, Barrister & Man, Soap Commander, Cold River Soap works etc.

If I didn't already own the R2 ATT razor then the 37c HD (39c just has a different haddle) slant would be my choice. It's suppose to give some excellent close shaves.

So I got my merkur 34c and a mix of 50 blades from shaving.ie

I'm just wondering what's the best order to try these blades out?

With my own research, this is my best guess:

    1) personna platinum
    2) bic chrome platinum
    3) polsilver super iridium
    4) Gillette 7'oc yellow
    5) Timor
    6) Astra
    7) Feather

Anything I'm mixing up badly there? Thanks

That blade order would work for me.
The Bics never worked we'll for me whereas the Personna range I'd recommend as a good starter blade.
    Any questions, holler!

Do you mean you'd prefer them as a starter blade or just in general? Thanks
