What exactly is the logic behind that silly "rule"? Some guys say "it's just the way it is" etc - not a reason. I think it's a bit creepy actually - in the same way I find overly rigorous vetting of boyfriends by fathers creepy.

And I know a man has every right to be concerned about his daughter's/sister's wellbeing but I'm talking about those who are OTT about it and seem to be more concerned about how it affects them rather than their sister/daughter.

Not even going to bother to read through the thread.

There is no rule like that. You must be easily susceptible to the media and "mags"

I've never really understood this either, when it goes beyond the realms of brotherly concern, which is understandable. If they're worried about their friends being d1cks to their sister, well, she's a big girl and can look after herself. She doesn't need big brother coming to the rescue (speaking from personal experience here!)

What really baffles me is how men (in general, not just brothers) act towards their female relatives in relation to them dating/having sex. A good amount of my male relatives, friends and my own BF have said at one point or other that they were going to be massive a-holes to their little sisters'/ daughters ' boyfriends just because ''she's my little sister/daughter, of course I'm going to hate whoever she goes out with!"

I don't get it. Why aren't they happy that their sister/daughter/ loved one has found someone who loves her / cares about her? Why do they go on the defensive? Men of Boards, please explain!

Well then you're not in a position to tell me what I must be susceptible to. ;)
There is no rule like that.
Actually, according to a sizeable number of people, there is.

Beacuse we don't believe our sister/daughter/ loved one has found someone who loves her. I believe my sister/daughter/ loved one has found someone who wants sex

No need for this thread to know :) The intellectual elite have your number, they will call you.

    Sizable number of people?

    Ok.

How can you know, though? Surely the girl knows herself what the guy wants and is happy with him. I think it's a bit silly just to be mean to the guy from the offset , just because you think he only wants sex. Fair enough, if he turns out to be a wankbag then, yeah, it's understandable that you wouldn't like him with your sister, but you can't possibly know that straight off the bat.

    /my two cents.

Who doesn't? Where's the problem? This seems to imply that you wouldn't want a sister/daughter/loved one to experience life for herself. Would you prefer if your parents decided that you couldn't go out with a hot girl because they think she doesn't love you? Or would you rather take your chances?

I can completely understand someone not being comfortable with their friend going out with their sister because of the awkward social dynamic, but I think this thread is more about guys who don't like the idea 'just cause'.

What happens if you hook up with her not realising its your mates sister? The next step/date you introduce her to her brother not knowing their brother sister.

This has had to have been a plot line from Neighbours/Home and Away at some stage?;)

Has this happened to anyone one? I reckon you'd cut the tension with a knife if your not picking yourself up off the floor.....

This reminds me of a debs one of my friends went to.

He was sitting on the bus with his girlfriend, waiting for it to make the journey back to Dublin. One row in front and across were two lads. One of the lads (lad A) says to the other "Smell me finger" and gestures as in that he was stimulating a young lady's vagina with his fingers. the other lads (lad b) smells the fingers.

The lad A then tells lad B, "Thats your sister!!". A big fight broke out and my mate laughed.

Btw, there is generally a rule that you don't go near your mates sisters or exs among my friends. Ofc there is always exceptions.

    There's a few reasons.

It's easier than having to say to your mate "I don't think you're worthy of my sister"

More importantly, it changes the dynamic between the guys, not only whilst they're going out but also when it ends. Often guys don't like their mates getting with close female friends for the same reason.

I'd be pretty uncomfortable if a best friend of mine went out with my sister. It'd change the circumstances too much. Imagine your friend calling to your house, not for you, but for your sister? Ughh *shudder*.

    :)

I would bet all my money the vast majority of girls in a new relationship have no idea what the guy wants. Yes she might think he's a lovely sweetheart, but the numero uno thing on his mind is having sex with her.

He might eventually fall in love with her, but getting her clothes off and banging the hell out of her is his only priority.

    Not true!!

She might have a good looking friend that he wants to see her lez out with first.

Even if that is the case, I don't really see the problem, perhaps the girl is perfectly happy with this arrangement, and doesn't need her brother/dad/whoever being a jerk to her new shag/ boyfriend. She can take care of herself. :D

What if you brought a girl that you liked home and your ma/sister was a big old b1tch to her for no reason?

It's embarrassing and uncomfortable for the girl , no matter how good the brother's intentions are.

Pretty simple, I know more about my friends than my sisters do and in 99% of the cases, I would not let my friends near them.
    Exactly
    Dudess wrote: »
What I'm referring to is the "rule" that it must not be broken under any circumstances - that sisters are a no-no, end of story, even if the guy is a respectful, decent dude and he really loves the sister, and she really loves him.
The guy you think is respectful decent etc could be all a front and has loaned your brother the most hardcore scat porn he has even witnessed, and then turns up at his door with a bunch of roses for you. He doesn't want to hear his sister bitching to him for years to come "you're not still hanging around with that bastard are you, after what he did to me."

Do girls ever mind their mates to go out with their brothers? I would have thought the same "rule" might apply. I think it would be less likely for your brother to be bitching saying "you're not still hanging around with that bitch are you, after what she did to me." regardless of who was in the wrong.

I think it is obviously since things can go sour and cause problems, this goes for FOAFs too, I know people who will not go to particular parties because he/she will be there.

My brothers are 16 and 9 years older then me.
Id say theyd go a bit mad if they found out i was seeing one of their mates.
They thought a lad 4 years older then me was bad enough and it wouldnt be taken too well if i went older then that never mind the fact it was one of "the lads".
They'd be breaking the sister rule and the half their age plus seven rule

I remember a good few years ago myself (21) and a couple of my mates were drinking in the Globe on a Saturday afternoon when we decided to make a night of it and go to Ri-Ra(?). Anyway, with that exuberance and optimism that four pints brings, I decided to invest in a packet of condoms just to be on the safe side. I went into the toilet and put my €3 in and no condoms came out. Anyway, when I went up to get the round I mentioned it to the barman, who said he couldn't do anything; manager not here, rented machines etc. I told him not to worry about it, got the drinks and thought no more about it. Anyway afternoon turns into night and at this stage a load of our mates have arrived (about fifteen of us) and we go dancing.Super night and long story short I end up snogging one of my mate's sister(19). He doesn't mind as we'd known each other off and on for six years (he's my best mate's cousin) and I had known his sister for three years. So we're all outside, at the end of the night milling around trying to organise taxis, who's going home who's going back to my mate's gaff for more booze. So seven of us are going back to my mate's gaff and are assembled. Cousin is just saying goodnight to his sister, as he's going home, (she's coming back to my mate's/her cousin's) ,and making sure she has money, keys etc., when who should arrive on the scene like America? Yup. The barman from earlier on. I had completely forgotten him and by the time my drunken brain had moved from "where do I know him from" to "oh this could look very bad" the damage had been done.
He saw a group of eight people, all chatting, me to two blokes, cousin to his sister, assumed I was alone and refunded me my €3 saying quite audibly,to "us three lads", "I know some places try to screw their customers with the condom machine, assuming they'll be too embarrassed to complain, but we're not one of them mate. Here's your €3 back." And off he goes feeling righteous without an idea of the collateral damage he's just caused.
I'm standing there with seven sets of eyes, either downcast (while furiously biting lips), grinning, accusing or downright furious.
I've known the girl three years, I've kissed her for the first time barely an hour ago and here's this barman refunding me Johnny money. I was going to tell the truth but it sounded hollow even in my own ears, and then I'd just appear a liar aswell, so I just stood there and copped a plea.
The cousin went off disgusted and his sister made a point of going back to my mate's house in the other taxi.
When we got back to my mate's house we all started drinking. I couldn't meet her eye, even though I knew I had done nothing wrong, there was no way she was going to believe the truth. So I didn't even try it.
We were there for a while(I was drinking Jameson heavily "for the nerves") when conversations started splitting into twos and threes. Anyway, inevitably, we end up face to face and she says to me in the haughtiest and most disapproving face she can muster,"So you reckon you were in? Do you?" but with such a roguish twinkle in her eye that I couldn't help but twinkle back,"No. But I do now."

See, my sister is nine years younger than me.

I'd question the motives of a 30 year old friend of mine wanting to hook with my sister tbh. Her last bf was the same age as me, and I was really concerned.

Having said that, she does have a couple of mates who'd I'd jump if I was single.

But, I've never looked at any of my own mates' sisters in that way. Just never occurred to me. Most of them were children when I 16/7/8/9 and I still kind of see them that way, if you know what I mean.

The older ones were all bowlers.

i hope you sorted him out...
