OVER six per cent of all asylum claims in Ireland are coming from people who have already broken the law and are facing criminal charges.

Figures obtained by the Sunday Tribune show that 51 people applied for refugee status from behind bars in the first three months of this year.

The vast majority of the claims came from individuals detained at Cloverhill remand prison where they were facing criminal charges for crimes including drug trafficking, robbery and fraud.

Its a crime wave!

THE number of people being jailed for failing to pay fines has almost doubled in one year, the Irish Independent has learned.

Some 2,520 people were locked up last year because they couldn't, or wouldn't, pay court- ordered fines compared to just 1,335 the previous year, new figures reveal.

The economic downturn and increased enforcement of committal warrants by gardai are the main factors for the rise in jail terms handed out to cash-strapped householders.

It is understood most cases related to non-payment of fines for road traffic offences. A small number are believed to involve other minor offences, including non-payment of television licence fines.

A shockingly high figure of approx. 300 million is being spent on asylum seekers each year. This is an unaccountable amount of money. It averages at approx. 20,000 per asylum application. As I said, mugs.

They should certainly deport any criminals, especially drug dealers. For some reason, I think the OP's motives go a little beyond criminality and is a pop at the non-national community of Ireland.

If there are issues, we should tackle them. Anyone drug-trafficking here should be immediately deported. If they don't respect the lives of us and our children, then they have lost their right to stay here.

Still - we shouldn't use this as a means of creating hysteria. I've had the pleasure of working with some great foreigners, and I think this may be a pop at the entire community - although I could be wrong.

It is a pop at our immigration policies, or lack of them. The vast majority of foreigners in Ireland are game ball, my issue is with mass immigration, not immigration.

From that Irish Times link, 300 million quid a yr spent on asylum applications. 2.26bn quid over the last 7yrs, now what the hell has FF been doing to spend so much on this area?

It is understood most cases related to non-payment of fines for road traffic offences. A small number are believed to involve other minor offences, including non-payment of television licence fines.

They should just become drug dealers, claim they had an underprivileged upbringing and they would get suspended sentences.

Foreigners are usually much poorer than normal irish people, this is no excuse for commiting crimes of course, but poor people commit more crimes that would land you in jail.

That is a cop out, growing up, I would have been considered "poor" but I never committed crimes except for knacker drinking and such like.

We have no clue how many foreigners are in the country, never mind their background. It is a crazy situation.

33% of prison committals may be non-Irish nationals, unfortunately 89% of the prison population is Irish.

Have a look here at the Prison Services report for last year. Page 16 to save you a bit of time.

It is not a drop in the ocean, immigrants make up 15-20% of our population yet they make up 33% of our prison population.

In parts of West Dublin, immigrant children are the majority in the local schools. This is Ireland, not Poland or Nigeria.:mad:

The cheek of them to complain that we are racist for not building schools for them, how the hell where we suppossed to know hundreds of thousands of them would arrive in Ireland? Instead, Africans who were just off the plane were allowed to accuse us of racism, unhindered, for not having school places awaiting their children.
