    That's sad to hear man. I'd advise you check out the fitness forum, and the diet and nutrition forum. Some very motivational stuff going on there. You should try taking up rugby, loads of big men are needed there and it's a great way to get fit. Most people are very nice. Just check out this thread and it'll show you how friendly rugby teams are. :) Go to the rugby forum to get information on clubs, or go to your local club if you know it. Loads of people starting in the club I'm in this year to get fit.
    If you're near a pool I'd advise swimming. If your worried about showing off your man-gut go in the early morning or late evening when all the kiddies will be gone.
    If you can't do all that, why don't you just invest in an iPod and go for a long, nice walk every day. Nothing that'll knock you out, but just to get your heart-rate up abit for 30 minutes. As long as you can hold a conversation, your not going too fast. Or sign up to the challenge in either the Fitness or Diet and Nutrition forum, I can't recall which one it is.

    Seriously, I know you can be completely demotivated, especially when you've been overweight/obese for a long time. You begin to feel it's just impossible for you to lose weight. But when I started watersports and was **** at it I just wanted to get fitter so I'd be good at it. You just need to start something for motivation. Like getting fitter for rugby or whatever.

    I'm assuming your a fellow by the way (Larkin) but if not women's rugby is great too along with all the other things I said. I'm not sure of your age either but everything I said applies no matter what age you are. Take some risks and it'll pay off.

    Thanks for the post. I was thinking of a few personal things that happened in my life that has set me back from motivation. Then I thought "F*** it. Get up and do something". I live nowhere near a rugby team but I might take up walking in the mornings or evenings. It might life my spirits up a little :pac:

    I said to myself "There's always going to be people who criticise you for who you are, what you do, what you look like. But the strongest people are those who overcome those knockdowns."

    It's time for me to stop living in the past and think of the future :cool:

    Yeah man, also, and this is up to you, but don't tell your friends your plan. Humans being what they are, their criticisms, annoying "slagging" or jokes can demotivate you, even if that's not exactly your friends intent.
    I know how it is with ***** on the street slagging you and calling you fat either in your face and behind your back, especially when you're a teen too. Find a quiet track or whatever, or grow a thick skin. Those ****ers do nothing but prosper of your misery. Don't let them win, keep going. Also remember, public gyms (always), swimming pools (out of peak hours) and whatever almost always have mature adults who don't give a **** what you're doing or how you look. Gyms are not only places for big bulgy iron-pumping men, but a good walk on a treadmill is great too.
    It's a pity you don't live near a rugby club, unless you have no interest whatsoever in rugby it's a very good and motivational way to get fit. You could try asking around your community just incase there is a small one you don't know about.

    Walking is great though, very good way to get fit and after a month of walking every day (or atleast 4 or 5 days out of the week) you'll start noticing a difference in your fitness. Seriously, check out the forums and you'll understand.

    I'd also recommend cycling but I personally find cycling abit lonely when I'm alone for some reason, but I'd be happy out walking alone!



    I know you might be wondering why I'm saying this, but having been overweight myself and then losing the weight (well, most of it), I get flustered when people can't do it after I have. There is lots of challenges, a good bit of it coming from other people, a good bit of it coming from yourself. If only I could share my experience, when you come out of the other end of the tunnel the feeling of accomplishment and improvement of confidence is apparent. You might keep failing, but failure is part of life. You'll lose some battles at times, your self-esteem will be low, bad things will happen in your life, there'll be days when you can do nothing, but aslong as you don't give up the war, that's the important thing.

    I wasn't expecting such great feedback off some of the boardsies for what I wrote.

    Some people just take their weight very personally. Before I could laugh it off, but now if I'm mocked/insulted for no reason then I go into a drastic rage. It's gone too far now.

    i blame women on men getting fat , i used to be in great nick then let my girlfriend move in , before i knew it , instead of making my own din or sometimes not bothering i would just have what she was having , aload of fried crap , more convenience than anything , before u know it ur slouching watching the soaps with a desert , get lazy , put on the weight and then when u realise ok back to the gym , u hope on the treadmill for 10 mins and are out of breath .

    how the hell can you let urself get this bad in a short space of time . since have woken up , do my own thing , eat when hungry , watch the diet and instead of watching lazy tv , get ass down to gym or park for a jog . thankfully i am back to my superior masculine self . ooh ya :P

    Quite simple. Bad diet, Junk food specificially. I was a regular junk food eater until recently. Stopped eating it completely about 3 weeks ago. Already lost 1/2 a stone. Didn't even do a hint of exercise to achieve that.

    The Saturday night special of 8 or 9 pints followed by a McDonalds/pizza/BK/Abra/miscellaneous poisons. That's not going to help anyone stay skinny. :pac:

    Fair point. But being Ireland, it's how a lot of us socialise on weekends.

    The real killer in terms of weightgain is to sit on the couch the day after such calorie intake.

    Instead - do what you can to get rid of the hangover, and get out and about by lunchtime the next day. You'd be surprised what a half hour unbroken walking would do in terms of metabolism. The heart rate lifts slightly and the body sort of says to itself - hey we're in gear here - let's find some carbs/fat deposits to burn. It's a start and half the battle.

    One thing that is critical to weight loss is finding a buddy with the same goal in mind and go out with them, maybe every other evening. We are social creatures. Just the thought that someone else is expecting you to go with them can really help you off the couch when the weather ain't great and you are tired after work or whatever.

    But it's so much easier to wrap your head up in your duvet, then get out of bed at 6pm and have a dirty big fry-up!

    1. Irish women - we were never taught to cook 'properly' hence we now go for convenience foods. Men can hardly take care of themselves - pitiful creatures altogether

    2. Increase in convenience foods with high sat fat. A girl in my office obsessed with loosing weight even though size 10 didnt know there were diff types of fat (she is in her 30's) . Mental

    3. That leads on to poor nutrional information. My sister is such a bad eater - all McD's and chocolate. When she feels like loosing weight, she just doesnt eat!!

    4. Money and jobs - increase in wealth hence more cars less walking. Also, who here can walk 20min to shop grab supplies for week and walk back home. Not many I guess. So planning of new estates and houses fits here

    5. Laziness - this took over my life for years as a teenager. The slaggings, was easier to accept being fat. As I got older I realised I didnt have to 'settle' for acceptance of this. I moved my fat ass (or arse in Ireland)

    AW,, that sentence just hurts to read.. no I won't I'm walking away.... I'm taking the high road....:o I need the exercise. ....

    It's not an individual's fault, if another person is fat, {parent child relationship excluded}. It's one's responsibilty to take of their own health, it is not acceptable to shift the blame. In this day and age with the accessibility to information regarding nutrition and exercise there is no reason not to be informed.

    .....I'm still going to take the high road I need some cardio. :o

    She is a healthy size. She must be eating healthily.

    If you want to exercise, you can. Money is not a factor, if you have it you can join a gym, if you dont you can join a sports team or take up jogging.

    Sorry to hear about that, but that is your personal problem, I rarely see many overweight teens in Ireland(compared to other countries).

    i think the latest bad 80's clothing craze in ireland for girls (pair of brightly coloured curtains with ballet shoes and black leggings is perfect for hiding any beer and 4 star pizza induced 'overhang'.....so if you meet someone you can imagine they are thin and then close your eyes when they take their clothes off....win win for both partys:pac::pac::pac:
